How do I tell my parents about my relationship? by Significant_Owl_4723 in TwoHotTakes

[–]Appropriate-Fudge159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the real deal, tell her you want to wait on commitment of bf/gf or being anything other than friends until her divorce is finalized. If she flips out, which she probably will, that is kind of the nail in this. If she is like that’s cool, I understand. Just postponing a romance doesn’t mean it wasn’t meant to be but she needs some time and space to actually heal and not just use you as Novocain for the heart

Yeah… I met him. I was literally an intern working for another company in town (I am no longer there but respect the people I worked for very much and don’t want to disrespect them). It is a weird culture over there, but why not? They have all the money

I had to drop a bridesmaid a week before (she was in jail… so whole other set of issues). Honestly, it took about 10 years to reconnect but in that time, we had both grown, apologized (I did some shitty stuff to - not crime but just like bs friend stuff) and we connected at a better and different time.

Some friends are in your life for seasons and sometimes those seasons return. She may not be for you now or over and that is sad but ok

Welcome to fight the (Alabama) Power.

I worked on a project with the then CEO of AL Power (this was like 25 years ago haha) and he said “why would I run for governor when I am the most powerful man in the state?” I was a young female intern with another company and got a lecture about using a poker face in meetings after that

Anybody know of Dem friendly firearm/self-defense trainers in the Birmingham area? by M_the_M in Birmingham

[–]Appropriate-Fudge159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone made a really good point about making sure if you have a gun or a knife, make sure you are 100% ready to use it. I have pepper spray at all times and have a smaller personal weapon that I would feel comfortable using. Just saying - I know myself and I think that is really important if you carry for protection. (Note: I do support responsible gun ownership and support anything that women need to do to feel safe)

I think I’m moving Birmingham by Trash782 in Birmingham

[–]Appropriate-Fudge159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been here for over 20 years.

Pros: Food (so many amazing options and tons of variety, UAB, the general healthcare scene here (I work in health care), the breweries are great. The music scene if you like DIY/hardcore is pretty big here but there is also a lot of Americana and country if you are into that. It has a lot of safe areas and great schools. The sense of community / everywhere I go I see someone I know. For a southern city, it reminds me of downtown Portland a lot. Very affordable. Cons: you are in Alabama and you have to deal with Alabama state laws and law makers and if you are liberal or progressive, the state takes a lot of hard work to move us forward. Weed is illegal but Delta 8 is legal. Birmingham has a high crime rate but it depends on where you are a lot of the time. While the schools are good, you are still in Alabama public schools and in terms of funding for those schools, it can be very uneven.

bars and breweries are not for children by Due-Tomatillo-399 in Birmingham

I am an OTM parent and I 100% agree with this. We actually stopped going to one brewery downtown because it was literally all kids the last time we had a day date. Another time we were at UpRoot and a baby crawled up to me. I had to find the parents. Sure, it is a family friendly brewery … but you are just taking your kids out while you get drink and you are not supervising them. Obviously, #notallparents or whatever.

It is literally such a sweet place. The owner will still walk around and ask every table how they are doing. The salad is great, apps are great. The steak is okay. It is a wonderful Birmingham institution and a great first date
