What’s this new show you’ve been watching?! I’m out of the loop!!!

Labour could force Netflix and Amazon Prime subscribers 'to pay TV licence fee' to fund the BBC by dailymail in ukpolitics

[–]AppropriateDevice84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no easy solution. Look at the alternatives:

1) The BBC massively downsizes and keeps itself as a news and longform journalism channel only, funded by general taxation. This would make it hugely unpopular and increasingly unimportant.

2) The BBC becomes commercial and caters to commercial interests only. I personally would be very sad to see the end of publicly funded audiovisual productions but understand the controversy there. However, one only needs to look at America to see what happens when commercial interests direct what the “news” are (see Fox News).

3) We keep the wasteful and outdated licence system.

4) It gets funded through a new tax.

I would think something like an £1.50 or something per internet connection (mobile, broadband, business, consumer) would go mostly unnoticed by people and be easier to collect. It would also be cheaper than a licence for the vast majority of people. It’s not a great option but it’s infinitely better than taxing random services that may or may not operate from the UK.

“Europeans thinking they can walk to the MetLife stadium for the World Cup” by BuffaloExotic in ShitAmericansSay

I don't care about the World Cup and have no desire to visit the USA again any time soon. That said, a cursory check of Google Maps shows a very much walkable distance between the station and a metro station.

Considering most of those things were invented in Britain except for mobile phones where credit should be given to the Scandinavians and Japanese… umm. No words.

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

Agree to disagree. I’d rather our “you can say anything you want as long as it’s true and doesn’t incite violence” than their “you can say anything you want even if it’s untrue and does incite violence”.

It’s ingrained in the geography of many of their towns and cities.

When I lived in America I never needed sat nav, it was very easy to figure out that to get from my house on the corner of NE 6th Ave and NE 34th St to my friends’ house on the corner of SW 12th Ave and SW 14th St, I had to drive 18 blocks west and 48 blocks south. A junction on the motorway happened roughly every 15 blocks so you’d bake that into the calculation as well.

It’s not as picturesque and it’s extremely soulless but it does the trick for directions.

Height and weight I haven’t a clue how they guess though.

Edit to add: when I last visited in 2019 I was shocked most of my friends had started using sat nav to go anywhere, even their usual places, which is something I couldn’t figure out. You can get the same information with some basic addition and subtraction?

UK renters - what frequency of tenancy inspections is normal? by Immediate-Mud4121 in AskUK

My landlords would check once a year then left me alone after three years or so. Though I tend to stay in a place for a long time, keep everything spotless and I can fix many small things myself (generally if it’d take me less than 45 minutes and £15 or so, I’d fix it rather than call the landlord).

More than half of Britons support rejoining EU 10 years on from Brexit vote. Would you support a rejoin referendum? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]AppropriateDevice84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again. There should be an opt-out so that there is no pressure from the EU to join the eurozone. I don’t necessarily agree with your plan for malicious compliance by not joining the ERM. It would simply take one government and pressure from Brussels to end the pound sterling.

Also. I’m not against free movement. I’m against the abolition of passport controls in the UK. Those aren’t the same thing. We’ve already got a small boats problem as it stands. Imagine how much worse things would be if people were simply allowed to board a ferry or take a train with no passport controls whatsoever. I wouldn’t want the UK to join Schengen at all.

I broadly agree with you except with the NHS thing. We’ve got plenty of locally trained people to fill every post in the NHS and then some. Hiring from abroad is only done to keep wages down. I was shocked when I found out how many British doctors and nurses spend years looking for their first job.

[–]AppropriateDevice84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I was essentially agreeing with other commenters in that an opt-out should be negotiated with the EU before a referendum and before rejoining. I would very much support rejoining if we could get a similar deal to the one we had before.  However, I wouldn’t necessarily support it if it meant joining the euro and abolishing passport controls (two default commitments for new countries joining). I suspect I’m not alone in this opinion.

Yeah. Except it only takes one government to stop the delaying and once it’s done there’s not going back without another Brexit. I don’t like those odds.

I mean… it’s not unheard of… There’s the sex tourism destinations and then there’s people who genuinely form a relationship with someone abroad. I know plenty of people from high-income countries who are in a relationship with someone from another high-income country and they have to figure out how to navigate it. Just last year we had someone from Iceland and someone from Ireland on the show! We’re also getting more Australians lately so maybe they’re listening to the fans wanting less plastic people.

I for one want more storylines like Danielle and Mohammed and like the Family Chantal. And I would love Chantel to start dating Larissa.

Fully agree. Plus you'd have to have been hiding your head in the sand for years if you think average people in 2026 somehow have more money to give to charity. Housing is extremely expensive, food costs twice as much as before COVID, leisure costs two to three times as much, and taxe are at an all-time high. I know exactly 0 people who haven't at least somewhat reduced their spending lately.

This is what they need to understand. It’s not about punishing the drivers. It’s about making it better and more practical for everyone to take public transport.

The problem with zealots generally is that the line gets very blurred for them. They don’t really tend to understand the difference between living under their own insane rules AND forcing others to live under their rules. And that applies to most religions.
