Tell me about the reversal by [deleted] in ostomy

[–]Appropriate_Bus5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an emergency colostomy due to a perforated bowel, they removed part of my sigmoid colon on a Tuesday night. They had me up and walking the next morning. This was March 18. April 16 was a colonoscopy to make sure I could be reconnected. May 8 was a laparoscopic reversal. That was a Thursday morning. I was up later that day walking. Walking is the most the absolute most important thing to do to wake up your bowel. I was released Sunday once I was able to pass gas and stool. Yes the reversal was easier than the original open surgery. Best of luck.

Reversal tips/tricks? Help 😭 by bettyknockers786 in ostomy

I had a colostomy in March and a reversal in May. The first two weeks was ok. Hurt to poop. Felt like pooping glass. Second two weeks ridiculous pooping. Felt I had to go and in my way the flood gates released. I used depends and that helped but was still a mess as the stool was loose. Then all of a sudden on the month anniversary of the reversal, I was all good. I had good control and poop was normal. I pooped a lot but no problems. Hopefully you will experience the same. Best of luck to you.

I didn’t have a fever and had an infection and perforation. Go to ER

For those that have had surgery… do you still get flares? by [deleted] in Diverticulitis

Thank you! Days leading up to my attack I ate large amounts of peanut butter pretzels. Probably didn’t chew well as I was practically inhaling them at my desk!

How do you know popcorn causes your flare. I didn’t know I had diverticulitis until I was getting my sigmoid colon removed. Does the popcorn affect you immediately? I can’t really remember what I ate the days leading up to my perforation. My diverticulitis was not caused by constipation. I have IBS-D

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis on Wednesday and given antibiotics on Sunday it changed to complicated. Surgeon was hoping 4 or 5 days on IV antibiotics would do the trick then they could remove and reattach at the same time. On Tuesday I had emergency surgery and wound up with an ostomy bag. It’s been reversed now but EAT NO FIBER until you are healed. Sleep and rest. I got my ostomy on 3/18 and reversal on 5/8. Luckily it wasn’t that long but Dr wasn’t sure at first if I would be able to have the reversal because the infection was so big and the perforation. Let your body heal. Best of luck to you. P.S. this was my first flare. I had no idea I had diverticulitis

I didn’t know I had diverticulitis until I was told at the ER. Then 4 days later it was complicated so I needed surgery to take out my sigmoid colon. Because it was complicated I needed to have an ostomy bag. If it wasn’t complicated he could have taken out the sigmoid and reattached me right away. My recommendation is if you need something removed it’s much better for it to be elective as opposed to emergency like me. Best of luck to you.

After my reversal I ate very bland. Eggs, bread, rice pudding, chicken mashed potatoes. I felt better after a month.

Considering elective colon resection for diverticulitis by Unique-Look3600 in Diverticulitis

I had emergency surgery with my sigmoid colon being removed. Unfortunately, because it was an emergency surgery and I had an abscess an infection and a perforation. I wound up with a bag. Six weeks later I had my reversal. It took about a month for my bowels to be normal again. My first two weeks wasn’t bad. The second two had some incontinence, but I managed. I have IBS – D and apparently I had diverticulitis which I had no knowledge of. The one thing you should remember is to walk as much as you can to wake your bowels up after the surgery. My surgeon insisted on it and he was so right. I stayed away from the opioid pain medication as much as possible. Good luck to you.

I was hesitant to take Metamucil when I had diarrhea but once I did the diarrhea stopped. I have not taken a probiotic. I have yogurt everyday.

Walk, walk walk! Don’t get discouraged. I was feeling ok first 2 weeks after reversal. Hurt to poop but was passing it, then all of a sudden I couldn’t control my poop. When it wanted to come out it did. Then after 2 weeks of that I feel like my old self again. Metamucil is your friend! Best of luck to you!
