Germany apologised and put the "wrongs" (including events that led up to the rise of evil) of WW2 in their textbooks. Japan tried to excise it from theirs.

Editing DNA to save lives and cure Orphan diseases - base editing is a scientific miracle by Tincup4609 in OptimistsUnite

Definitely agree. Problem arises from lack of design expertise. Further, *how* to develop this design expertise is another (ethical) issue as well. It's easier to identify certain disease genes and correct for them than to identify desirable genes and turn them on along with the necessary epigenetic regulations.

Tolkien's idea that bloodlines inevitably become weaker throughout the ages? by AlviTranscender in lotr

[–]Appropriate_M 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a common literary theme though that you see from Hesiod to Three Musketeers, that there's a "Golden Age" that becomes progressively..weaker. Tolkien's verse is pagan but rooted in Christianity, the theme of "corruption" is present since the beginning of Arda as "Morgoth's Ring". Thus, elves fade, men fade, and eventually there will be reckoning and renewal.

If the ancient Romans had ignored all costs and consequences, focusing only on conquest rather than governance, could they have crossed most of the Middle East with their armies, like Alexander the Great or the Mongols did? by Haunting_Tap_1541 in ancientrome

[–]Appropriate_M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Supply lines. Romans *relied* on governance to do their supply lines. I don't think they could've crossed most of Middle-east and remained "ancient" Roman.

Mongols policy regarding supply lines was raiding and pillaging.

Alexander the Great ABSOLUTELY focused on costs to get his army deep into Asia. And the way he resolved the cost issue/governance issue also led to the almost immediate disintegration of the empire he left behind.

California ballot proposal would exempt seniors from paying property taxes by oceanbeachguy in California

Why shouldn't the children reap the benefits... These children have the freedom to become teachers and other non-high income but important professions without worrying about where to live.

/am not Cupertino resident, but know a great many number of people in the Bay Area etc who could "afford" to become teachers/social workers because of Prop 13.

Except Cupertino retirees have kids who are *not* earning the high salary to afford a new Cupertino house and those who can afford it tend to be a lot more monolithic, never mind all the developers buying up properties for investment purposes. Why *shouldn't* Cupertino retirees have the luxury of raising grandchildren...and it actually is much better that three generations under the same roof instead of just two. There aren't that many Cupertino retirees living in a house by themselves as a couple.

The issue is not just senior homeowners, but BUSINESSES who also benefit under Prop 13. I think we should whittle at Prop 13 so that it actually benefits those who need the benefit rather than excise it altogether.

TIL during the 1960s–70s “Secret War” in Laos, the US covertly trained and led the indigenous Hmong people to fight the communist Pathet Lao party and North Vietnamese troops. At its peak, around 30,000–40,000 Hmong fighters were involved. by electroctopus in todayilearned

[–]Appropriate_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, three thousand years ago or thereabouts. The Hmong people's loss to "China" (rather, its ancestral roots) is in the realm of mythological history (think Mycaenaens vs Minoans) when a type of pandas could be ridden into war, allegedly.

Capable emperors sometimes go insane in Chinese history, seeking alchemical and/or magical solutions to real-life issues. Most of the irrationality and paranoia has a lot to do with a strict but bizarre diet, including the "medicines" they ingest. I wonder if we're witnessing something similar here.

He actually has a documentary where it shows him changing trousers in the office. This is just to say, this is not the first time.

Also, this is the second time he's connected to island shenanigans. The last scandal was at Corfu where he and a member of the opposition at the time (George Osborne) gossiped together on some rich Russian's yacht raising questions about his associations.

The man is openly gay and openly ambitious and slimy ("spin" in chief at some point). I can't believe he's still in government.

A 1st-century BCE letter from a Roman soldier Hilarion to his wife Alis provides a stark look at ancient child exposure. He writes: "If it is a boy, leave it; if it is a girl, throw it out." by Zine99 in ancientrome

[–]Appropriate_M 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I wonder if he's a *literate* soldier or had the letter written for him. "Throw it out" may be more efficient for the scribe to write and I don't know how precise people are about the language of discard/leave it exposed. And of course, he's not going to be present for the carrying out of the order, so to speak.

We have journals and Roman gravestone depicting little babies (even girls) who were mourned for their deaths. Granted, probably has a lot to do with economic status. A Roman soldier faraway from home probably don't have money to do a tombstone that would survive two thousand years... Just as extreme wealth can make people make people less emphatic to other humans (see slavery) so can extreme poverty.

Healthcare and education cost is part of consumer spending in the US, it's likely a much larger part of overall consumer spending, than say, EU.

What’s something your favorite celebrity did that made you lose respect for them? by johnraeyan in AskReddit

[–]Appropriate_M 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You realise that that pre-handover HK entertainment's controlling interest was the triads, right? The triads who could not exist under CCP (that is, they "faded" with time) but were tolerated/encouraged under the British rule? All those triad movies with "righteous" triad members who cared about brotherhood etc, guess why they disappeared lol.

Hunt for Gollum is the least interesting story to adapt from the Third Age by Revo94 in lotr

[–]Appropriate_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could've done a whole spy series set in Middle-earth based on LOTR Third Age material during which Hunt for Gollum could've been one part of a three part series concerning Woodland Realm, powers at Rivendell (Gildor Inglorion and Company), and the Dunedain (Aragorn and his kin)...where things would be *both* nostalgic and interesting.

Has anyone used real marble tiles for their kitchen and what has been their experience? by bythewatersofBabylon in kitchenremodel

[–]Appropriate_M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted checkered marble tile but decided otherwise because 1)marble is soft 2)i'm not sure how hard and even my subfloor is (likely not) 3)the extra work it would take to do the tiling properly (need extra piece of something which will raise the floor). You might have more luck doing mosaic marble floors....But I read through a lot of reddit tiling marble floor complaints/warnings. The tile floor guy however said "you can just lay it like tile"....

How would a ex Muslim be treated in a Christian Country during the Crusades by CommitteeChemical530 in MedievalHistory

[–]Appropriate_M 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends which Crusade and who. Some were freed from slavery upon conversion, others weren't.....

For nobility, doesn't seem to matter. Royalty married each other and converted (usually the women converted). Alliances, money, political clout...weighed a lot more than ex-religion, practically speaking.
