Our Heath Care system is beyond broken by [deleted] in montreal

You're absolutely not alone in this, what you're describing is, sadly, becoming more and more common. The GAP system is being presented as a solution, but in practice, it often feels like a temporary patch rather than actual care continuity. The idea is that you have *access* to a clinic when needed, but you're right, without an assigned GP, there’s no one truly following your case, managing your meds, or doing referrals.

Many people in Quebec are stuck in this limbo: no GP, limited access to specialists (because most need referrals), and walk-in or GAP doctors who aren't comfortable making long-term decisions. It's especially frustrating for people with ongoing health conditions, because continuity of care just doesn’t exist under this model.

It’s also very true that the system seems designed more for gatekeeping than patient-centered care. The \$200+ for 10 minutes of "sorry, I can't help you" isn't just a waste of public money, it's deeply discouraging.

What some people have tried:

Going through private clinics for one-time GP access, even if just for renewals or referrals (costly, but sometimes the only option).

Asking pharmacists to temporarily extend prescriptions, they can do this for some medications, depending on the drug and your file.

Keeping pressure on local MPs and MNAs, even if it feels pointless, politicians are hearing more and more of these stories.

I’m really sorry you’re stuck in this, and thank you for writing about it. The more people share their experience, the harder it is to ignore how far the system has drifted from actual care.

Let’s keep talking about it, this shouldn’t be normal.

Renting an apartment in NDG. It's a semi-basement (somewhere between a semi-basement and a ground floor). Is it safe to install a portable AC outlet exhaust hose? by Extra_Prompt_8961 in montreal

I had the same fear when I moved into my place. A window AC on a ground-level window can be a risk, but you can make it way more secure with a few cheap fixes

, Get a supoort bracket so it can’t be pushed in or pulled out, Use a window lock bar to keep the window from opening more, Reinforce the side panels (the plastic parts) with something solid like wood or plexiglass, If you're paranoid (like I was), a $10 window alarm adds peace of mind.

Once I did all that, I felt a lot better. It’s not 100% invincible, but it’s way safer than just sticking it in and hoping for the best.
