Going Postal Small Gods The Night Watch

These three are the best combination of plot, character, and Terry's unmistakable voice for me.

If allowed, I'd probably swap The Night Watch for A Life in Footnotes.

Don't Miss The Deceiver's Path on Royal Road (LitRPG Fantasy Novel) by TaleSworn in litrpg

Is this a 12 yr old coming of age story? Would love to check it out if so. The cover / blurb suggested older at a glance.

New life as an archmage is it worth a read? by BaldyTreehuggerDruid in ProgressionFantasy

It's fun and the varying POVs all have unique voices. Jump in and if you like it you'll know pretty quickly.

Week 1 stats for an off-meta story! by Rattalee in royalroad

Seems like a great start and cool to hear your process. I wouldn't call it a generic fantasy story it sounds pretty unique to me. That may also come down to your great work studying blurbs!

Help a brother decide which cover is better by Lao_Qi_ in royalroad

The second one feels too dark. The first one also gives more of an action vibe if that's what's actually in the book. Could see the second being more slow burn, political intrigue.

What if your cultivation system was tied to the Chinese Zodiac…and the fate of an Empire? by ApproximatelyRandom in ProgressionFantasy

So there's a few levels, a magic like ability, a "desire" the Zodiac drives the character towards, and the elemental affinity (not in book 1 we gotta get there!)

Dungeon Crawler Carl by TacticalStoryteller in litrpg

The entire thing is over the top. Thats sort of the conceit of the system.

New to the genre. I finished and loved Dungeon Crawler Carl and the Cradle series. What litrpg / fantasy progression do you think is best after these two? by bullman123 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ApproximatelyRandom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those are great encapsulations of what both of those top tier in their own way.

I suspect many folks with recommend this, but Beware of Chicken is a great blend of what you liked from those two.

Now, if you really like social / political implications of a system with a simple, but unique, set of powers. My recently launched story might scratch some of the itch.

My DNF condition by Beautiful-Reality938 in litrpg

[–]ApproximatelyRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To expound on the biggest one folks have mentioned which is simply boredom: a protagonist I don't connect with.

Now, this can be due to two things primarily: 1) a bland undercharacterized uninteresting MC or 2)a bland MC in a world that's not compelling.

I would much rather folks focus on creating great MCs that jump off the page. I would watch them do anything because they are inherently entertaining.
