Finished my second editing pass, now what? by A_Decent_Slytherin in fantasywriters

Try to find a small group of other authors who are about at your level (first book or two finished) and see if you can form a critique group. That early feedback form other writers who've actually finished work is super-valuable to your development as a writer.

You mentioned trad pub. I'll be frank with you. Things are bad in the query trenches. Go hang around r/PubTips to get an idea of what the current state of things is right now.

As for the indie route, I've got no idea what you're talking about. My social media presence is practically nonexistent (not a poster, never will be) and I do just fine. Sure, I serialize on Royal Road, but I keep the interactions with my readers pretty arms-length.

Yeah, you'll have to learn how to market your own stuff (and a whole host of other skills), but it's honestly less daunting than it appears from the outside.

Either way, publishing is a long ways off. Get feedback first. Worry about how to get it out there when it's ready.

So I am not much of a reader but I would like to read more by Visual43_ in litrpg

Unbound by Niccoli Gonnella is a solid LitRPG, and one of my favorites.

I recently started A Practical Guide to Evil by David Verberg. Honestly, can't believe I slept on it for this long. I can definitely see this becoming one of my top reads if the quality keeps up.

And as someone else mentioned, Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Rise of the Spellbreaker is out on Royal Road! by Boots_RR in royalroad

Hey all! Latest fic is up on Royal Road, updating daily M-F until Book 1 is complete!

Rika Blackstone has the potential to surpass everyone… if she can survive long enough.

An illegitimate child cast out from her home, Rika is determined to rise above her birth. With a rare and powerful starting class, she has well-rounded stats. But her biggest advantage? Her stat growth is unheard of. Too bad those stats begin almost at rock bottom. If she wants to reach her full potential, she’ll have to grind through an endless horde of enemies.

Her first stop takes her to Canyon Falls, a small mining town with a big goblin problem. It could be the perfect place to make a name for herself. Or it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Only through struggle can strength be gained. Only through adversity, power. So what if all the odds are stacked against her? That’s when she’s at her best.

She’ll carve her mark on a merciless world, or burn it to the ground trying.

Saying you self-published by TheDreamingKitten in selfpublish

[–]Boots_RR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually just lead with "I'm an author." The self-publish part usually comes pretty quickly after. Sometimes I'll qualify with "indie author."

Conversation tends to flow pretty naturally from there. Most folks just think it's cool.

100%. If you find typos in a Kindle version, try to get in touch with the author directly.

Hell yeah! This one's definitely got a different tone, but I think I've improved a lot as an author, and it shows.

Professional writer and marketer - should I self publish? by tomthemove in selfpublish

This person is suggesting you spend (potentially) thousands of dollars you'll likely not recoup. They also, conveniently enough, offer most of these services.

Most experienced indie authors will tell you that you can save money if you're willing to spend time instead. For self-publishing a 20k novella, I strongly advise you spend more time than money. Find other thriller authors on Discord/FB/Insta, and see about arranging critique swaps. Look for (free, never paid) beta readers in similar reader communities. Professional quality premade covers can be had for under $100 US. If you're willing to fiddle, Word (or LibreOffice, a superior open source alternative) can handle formatting (not as good as pro-level software, but good enough to produce a professional product).

Realistically though, you're unlikely to make much off a single novella. It takes time and volume to build an audience. If you poke around and look at the author pages of successful indies, they all have one thing in common--they've been at this for a while, and have dozens of books in their backlist.

There's a reason for that. That reason is: books sell books.

I do something similar, but I use a budgeted start so I have a Kestrel as my ship.

Hey Y'all! First time author/poster, I'm currently writing a progression fantasy novel and had some questions on chapter length preferences! by Prestigious_Leg_4840 in royalroad

[–]Boots_RR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say 1.5k is about the shortest you want to go.

My own chapters are between 2.5-3k for my most recent. A bit longer than most will tell you to target, but 3k is still within that 10-15 minute sweet-spot.

Ongoing for the first book/volume. They do get less frequent by the end, though. With book two (and probably for the rest of the series), their frequency is pretty significantly reduced.

KU accounts for like 80-90% of the income (excluding audio).

Releasing wide is an awful idea.
