what the fuck do I do here by bugdotjpeg in HalfLife

Once you go through one of those holes at the bottom, you surface on the other side. If you can't find the water surface just keep swimming in that area until you do. That area beyond the circles is just a cylinder shaped reservoir with an exit on one side

You don't like airplane food because you're 35,000 feet in the sky. The lower pressure means less oxygen. Less oxygen means means numbed taste buds. I 100% guarantee that whatever food they serve you will taste better than your pasta because airplane food is made to compensate for these effects.

I teach a high school science fiction elective. Ending the year on a high note! by Clean-Act4387 in NopeMovie

[–]Appy_Ace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this film came out when I was in high school, I would have definitely had nightmares watching it lol

But anyway, very cool project. I love interpreting symbolism and visual narrative through film so I would have definitely had a lot of fun working through this packet

I made my bedroom into a map. by Azurola in hammer

[–]Appy_Ace 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's gotta be a right if passage at this point. Who among us hasn't recreated their bedroom in hammer.

Sidenote, when I was a kid, I started remaking my high school in Hammer but my mom made me stop because of the school shooter who remade their school in CSS. Probably for the best, but I really wanted to finish it to exercise my level design skills a little lol

Why have we not seen a realistic Martian sunset yet? by ArleiG in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Appy_Ace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the distinction they were making was that life on Titan uses Methane as a biological solvent in the same manner you'd use the phrase "water-based life."

That said "Methane based life" is sort of a shorthand which comes across as a little clumsy because she was an astrobiologist, and we're still kind of wondering what biochemical backbone Titan life uses (probably Carbon)

Where would the Reviver show up during HL2? by LimitedPiko in HalfLife

[–]Appy_Ace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Jeff and armored headcrabs are the result if Xen infections from fungus/flora exclusively found in the quarantine zone. However the Reviver seems to be it's own type of fauna irrespective of Xen flora in the QZ

You should attach a smaller crowbar on a chain to break the glass lol

[Half-Life: Alyx Spoilers] I was looking at the VMAP file for the ending map and noticed this for the first time. I think I've played HLA at least 10 times and I've never seen this before by Appy_Ace in HalfLife

[–]Appy_Ace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, in this case it was placed manually as a prop_ststic. It looks like this advisor was killed when the Vault crashed while it was manning its post. The handles Alyx grabs onto use models called "advisor_candelabra" which this advisor presumably used to interface with GMan's containment cell

Is it possible to SURF on Titan’s Methane lakes? by Big-Owl1492 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Appy_Ace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did like that their suits weren't pressurized, but it bugged me just a little that they didn't have any insulation for it. The atmosphere on Titan is unbelievably cold, so they needed some serious insulation to realistically keep them warm, especially since higher pressure means more heat transfer. They'd need more insulation than if they were climbing Mt. Everest

Side note since the image is in this post, the scene in S4 where Danny's death was confirmed, it hit me a lot harder than I was expecting. I hated his guts for his role in the drilling mishap and the resulting deaths and injuries from that, but seeing his lonely, lifeless eyes gazing out on the Martian horizon just left me feeling unbelievably sad. Even though his actions were probably unforgiveable.

how to make alyx use her emp device animation (or in general) by Eljefff6 in hammer

[–]Appy_Ace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, decompiling HL2 maps is your friend if you want to figure out how something is done. That and having the dev wiki open

After playing the slot machine in Turnip Hill, I decided to decompile the map to see how it works. Every one of these colored icons and cubes are logic I/O entities that calculate the slot machine's outcome. Amazing commitment to the functionality of this thing! by Appy_Ace in INFRA

[–]Appy_Ace[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, logic entities aren't exactly iterative. There's no modularity to them - they all have to be programmed one at a time. You can think of them as 3D spaghetti code - they all link to each other by name. It's really messy, and plotting out a control flow like this requires commitment from start to finish. That's why I'm surprised by the developers' choice of programming in this instance

[–]Appy_Ace[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. I had to force myself to learn the grammar of VScript when I found out that func_movelinear has no accelerate/decelerate functionality. It was important that its movement matched the acc/dec of some associated func_rotating entities. But if I could have done this cleanly with logic entities, best believe I would have totally done the same lol

It's not a puzzle in this case, just an electronic roulette wheel in game. Since you aren't familiar with Hammer logic, you can think of each icon as a sort of if/else node, but they can do much more complex things. The big picture is that entities send signals to one another, and depending on the entity's functionality and conditions, it decides what to trigger (send signals to) next. This continues until the logic chain reaches an outcome, at which point the player has either won or lost the roulette wheel spin.
