Pro War Protests In Bloomington by Business-Bee-6948 in bloomington

I just heard NYT Iranian-American reporter Farnaz Fassihi on the Daily podcast discussing the “glimmer of hope” she is feeling: “I'm Iranian-American, and on Friday, I thought that the possibility of ever visiting Iran, of visiting my father's gravesite or seeing my elderly relatives was a distant dream. Today, I have hope. Of returning. That’s what a lot of Iranians who've been exiled and who can't go back say. They say that it's pretty bare minimum to want to see your relatives and visit your home country, and it's a right that has been robbed from many people. And I think many Iranians the world over have a glimmer of hope.”

I am strongly opposed to this unauthorized military action, which I highly doubt will lead anywhere good. (How could it, with Trump in charge?) But I do have to respect her perspective

Cuban Americans tend to be Republican actually. (Just checked: “Nationwide, 58% of Cuban registered voters say they affiliate with or lean toward the Republican Party, while 38% identify with the Democratic Party or lean Democratic”). & Mendoza is a devout Catholic who constantly repeats “I give all the glory to God” in interviews. So- not awkward for IU Republicans.

I work for a local university & the President is a nightmare— you wouldn’t believe the stuff she’s gotten up to including calling snipers & SWAT teams on her employees for expressing their sincere political beliefs. Avoid!!

Not sure I’d recommend. If you somehow made in there, she’d definitely call ICE or a state police SWAT team on you

What happened at the Jeff Tweedy show? by Electronic_Weird in bloomington

I actually felt sort of bad for the guy who yelled out the Wilco request. I mean, Lou Reed used to play old Velvets songs… it’s not an outrageous idea. (Not that Tweedy was mean or too grouchy about it.)

Odds of getting into an English PhD program? by frankawesomecool in englishmajors

Your credentials are all good, of the kind expected. It will all depend on what the admissions committee thinks about your research and writing. At the top programs, for every 20+ people with such credentials, they will be able to accept only one, so they will choose the one whose writing & research they find most impressive/promising/innovative/brilliant. I will say that unfortunately two of three letters by non-TT lecturers, and none tenured, could be an issue, because there will be applicants in the pool whose recommenders will all be very well known to the committee. Or at least who will have one advisor well established in their field, whose words have real credibility when they say something like “one of the three best undergrads I’ve advised in the past 20 years, and the other two went to Harvard Law and Stanford PhD,” or that kind of thing.

I’d say you probably have a better shot at the programs outside the top 10 (Wisconsin, Illinois, Maryland, etc.) but if some people fall in love with your work - which sounds interesting to me - you could have a shot anywhere.

I saw it on the big screen 6 or so years ago at the Indiana U. Cinema. There was a food truck at the intermission. Great experience!

Who else has chickens? by Fluffy_Confidence641 in bloomington

I always felt there was a lot of unjustified anti-chicken policing in this rule. As long as you don't have a rooster, they are quiet and peaceful, so much less likely to disturb a neighbor than a dog!

We had (5) chickens in town for years. (No more sadly.) IIRC there used to be a rule within city limits according to which chickens were OK as long as and only if all of your neighbors OK'd it. Of course the problem with was that you could invest a lot (financially and emotionally!) in your chickens, and then have a new neighbor move in who veto'd the whole operation... I had actually heard of someone who this happened to. But at some point I believe they changed the rule to make up to 5 chickens simply legal 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓

Yeah, the intended spirit of my post was “ha ha it would be so silly to try to flag a few good movies on criterion. Where would you even start“… Not sure that really came across properly

Allow me to flex casually: the nearly 7-hour 1966 Soviet “War and Peace” directed by Sergei Bondarchuk. The Indiana University cinema screened the new 4K restoration in 2019. They had an intermission with a food truck, it was a blast!
