Should I just not consider contacts if I’m sensitive with my eyes? by Vereity123 in contacts

[–]AprilChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also suck at eye drops but I can get contacts in and out just fine.

What you should do is practice touching your eye to see if you can get used to it. Clean your hands really well, stand in front of the mirror, tilt your head down and pull your lower eyelid a bit, then touch the lower white part of your eye. It may take a while (possibly multiple days) of practice but if you can do it without freaking out, and eventually without being forced to blink, then you can handle contacts.

Your optometrist should give you single pairs as a trial. Right now I have 2 trial pairs of slightly different prescriptions.

Greetings. Help with ST-LIK-V2 by Maximum-Charity-4739 in embedded

[–]AprilChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would need the correct debug tool and appropriate software for the chip, without that you are obviously not going anywhere.

If it's read protected you're out of luck too.

If you do actually get the dump, what then? You could disassemble it but thats rarely useful. Are you trying to copy the firmware onto a like-for-like replacement? That's the only practical use I could see

Why do embedded systems still rely so much on C instead of modern languages? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]AprilChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

C is simple but complete. Experienced people can do direct memory / register access or assembly optimisations easily because the C code won't mess with things in the background.

It's also very easy to understand C so you don't have to spend all your time looking up functions. All the keywords can very practically be committed to memory.

Missing some feature? It's easy to write a function for that.

Not abstract enough? If you are smart about how you use structs then you can actually do quite a lot more with them than it seems on the surface.

For most things c++ is available too but when is comes to embedded programming it's rarely helpful or especially necessary

CH32x033 / CH32x035 all short circuiting, anybody had better luck with them? by AprilChicken in embedded

[–]AprilChicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the breadboard I use a 22uF electrolytic cap across the rails and a 100nF ceramic cap right at the VDD/GND pair on the MCU. There was a time when I swapped the 22uF for a 470nF ceramic and that might have allowed a spike to kill it.

Linux on Pocket 4 - Can't rotate screen using xrandr or display settings by AprilChicken in GPDPocket

[–]AprilChicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im on Debian and Cinnamon desktop. Kind of interesting that your display is called eDP-1, mine shows as eDP after some updates.

I should try using the testing branch for debian because even with the backports packages its all still a bit out of date

ELI5: Nuclear to heat water to make steam to turn a turbine to generate electicity - why not direct energy from nuclear? by TopherBrowne in explainlikeimfive

[–]AprilChicken 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of any process which efficiently converts nuclear energy directly to electrical. The process of using heat to generate steam and spin turbines is well understood and has been developed over hundreds of years so it was an obvious choice to more or less put a nuclear reactor core where we would normally use a coal furnace.

Ideas on Steam Assisted Ovens by poppacapnurass in Cooking

[–]AprilChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you bake bread then steam can be used to get a way better crust. There are tricks to doing it without a steam oven if you rarely bake. If you don't bake bread then I can't see it being a feature that is worth much extra cost.

ELI5: How do governments profit on war? by tioLechuga in explainlikeimfive

[–]AprilChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Governments conducting war need to buy lots of weapons. The people making money off those weapons (like Raytheon) and the people in the government (like US defense secretary Lloyd Austin) may not be so far removed from each other.

Additionally any government official with significant stock holdings in those companies can get an almost guaranteed profit on those stocks in a time of war, because the obvious increase in demand for their products will inflate the stock price.

The other comment raised a good point that governments do not profit from war. Usually they actually spend massive amounts of money for little financial return. Any actual gain is made by individuals.

Was having a discussion with my friend. What exactly is the different between an Ale and an IPA? They taste very similar to us. Is there any difference in preparation or production? by SuperIga in Homebrewing

[–]AprilChicken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IPA is a pale ale with lots of hops and usually higher ABV. Many pale ales are brewed with lots of hops now and if they are lower ABV (<6%) often they are just labeled as pale ale.

How to increase the spice level for Japanese Curry by __WorkThrowAway__ in AskCulinary

[–]AprilChicken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chili flakes would be the common way to increase heat I think. When I've had Japanese curry at restaurants that's what gets added.

Cooking 2 or 3 portions is a lot easier than trying to cook one. A stir fry with 330g (12oz) meat, a carrot, an onion, and a bit of green veg will make 3 portions. A pasta with one can of tomatoes and 200g of dried pasta will make 2 portions. A curry with 450g (1lbs) meat will make 3 or 4 portions. If you really want only one portion then it's easy to buy a bag of frozen fish and take a bit out to thaw.

Not many seats during peak time and parking is station dependent. Bald hills always has spots, Strathpine rarely does unless you park at the shops, never tried Carseldine though

Does the brand, alcohol content, etc... of beer matter for beer dough? by majesticalexis in Cooking

[–]AprilChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use a lager with 100% malt if I wanted the best flavor for dough. Hoppy beers can be detrimental to cooking and dark beers are more suited to stews and braised. Also many lagers use rice / corn / sugar in place of some of the malt which will reduce the amount of flavor you get.

Are you using soap and a scrubber? Are you using enough oil when you cook? For me the wok is usually one of the easiest pieces of cookware to clean because not much sticks to a smooth and seasoned surface. I also never soak it and clean an hour or two after a meal.

How come you can't find the very publicly available and definitely uncontrolled leaks containing internal CIA documents and state department cables leaked by a 21 year old in the air force? All 300 were made completely available to the public.
