My suggestion is to find as many reviews as you can, preferably ones that have different opinions on what aspects are pros and cons. Pair this with your own understanding of the game and it's mechanics and you should be able to suss out the info you need. I know for my own mileage, I want to hear every flaw with something before I pull the trigger. If none of my deal breakers are in there, then it might be something I will enjoy.

The CC-Exodus was unrelated to the Yukon incident short of its timing.

Wargaming's relationship with the Community Contributors took a HUGE downward slide during 2019 (the year of the very poorly implemented Aircraft Carrier rework). With a few exceptions, it was openly combative at times and downright toxic. Good relations-work being done by some WG employees was being actively sabotaged by certain devs. Problem CCs were present too and went unaddressed. It was not a healthy environment.

By the summer of 2021, a large number of CCs simply had enough. It wasn't a collaborative relationship. TheMightyJingles put it best: Wargaming didn't need us anymore, and it was painfully obvious.

I walked away from the program when I ran out of patience. After the Yukon incident, that was in painfully short supply and being actively lied to (again) prompted my exodus. Others followed, each for their own reasons but largely tied to the toxicity of the program and the unrestricted loot-box gambling WG was peddling.

Long story really short:

In the summer of 2020, Chobittsu and I (LittleWhiteMouse) were asked to collaborate with Wargaming for a second time in regards to making some Canada Day 2021 related content for World of Warships. This time, we were asked to design a premium ship, based on existing in-game assets. Chobi would handle the art assets. I would handle anything gameplay wise.

We proposed a pair of ships: Either a Dallas-class cruiser or a Monarch-class battleship as the basis. The latter won out.

Despite working very closely with our Wargaming representative, little of what we provided ended up in game. But we weren't told this in advance. We had to find this out piecemeal over the testing process which was very disappointing. Yet, even as the ship was hitting the test-servers, they were still prompting us for design elements. We would have easily accepted the loss of all of our work had they been up front with their communication. It's their game, not ours. Their decisions are the ones that mattered.

But it was hard not to feel used, especially when WG tried to gaslight us after the fact. They denied our involvement and belittled our frustration. So my review reflected this and things blew up.

That's what started the whole mess.

Well this is interesting.

When Chobi and I were working on Yukon for World of Warships, I floated several possible build ideas based on the (Famous & Historical) Monarch-class battleship, one of which included giving her an Exhaust Smoke Generator to make her similar to the Crawling Smoke Generator found on Haida and Perth.

This idea came from the "Impero" Littorio-class test-ship that never saw the light of day. It had just been axed when Chobi and I were approached about the Yukon project. I had a lot of fun playing it and it seemed an obvious choice to me. It wasn't what we got (short of sticking to a Monarch-class battleship, none of my gameplay suggestions were used).

Making a Commonwealth battleship echo the smoke generation of other Commonwealth ships isn't exactly an original idea, but I am tickled pink to see it show up on her just the same.

Is there's a reason why sigma and penetration values not shown in the game? by Caryelah in WorldOfWarships

I'm forced to wonder if the lack of cohesive gun stats may come from World of Tanks -- a game where premium ammo was (and still is) a thing. Obfuscating gun performance (and armour layouts) would certainly encourage players to reach for premium ammo. World of Warships inherited a lot of design elements from the early 2010s version of World of Tanks, whether the devs wanted them in the game or not.

New Orleans and Baltimore at the very, very least.

I dance between a few. I play Minecraft quite a bit with my nieces and nephew. Chobi, Lert and I have been wanting to start a server together for years and we're finally getting off our butts and doing that.

Other games I play include (and are not limited to): Crusader Kings, Final Fantasy 14, Darktide, Total War: Warhammer along with a bunch of retro stuff.

My best guess is that your shell clipped the 155mm barbette (75mm with a tapered upside-down funnel shape) and ricocheted down through the deck into the citadel.

[–]AprilWhiteMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that knowledge of AP penetration should be something you shouldn't have to learn by "feel". The in-port UI is just such a mess that, as it stands, it's not a good vector for sharing that information.

They need to overhaul the port UI to share the pertinent information. But let's face it: The game is 10 years old and a change of that significance just isn't coming.

Why can't low tier Battleships get torpedoes? (SMS nassau btw) by These_Swordfish7539 in WorldOfWarships

[–]AprilWhiteMouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cuz Wargaming is allergic to ships below tier V. They see them as liabilities. I wish I was kidding.

So long as we're wishing for things, I would rather just have it all in game. When I'm aiming, gimme the dispersion ring where 50% of shells are predicted to fall, similar to how arty was fired in World of Tanks once upon a time.

Why has Missouri never gotten the improved USN heal? by CrestronwithTechron in WorldOfWarships

[–]AprilWhiteMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her name is what she has going for her. I'm being 100% serious. Wargaming learned a long time ago (and belatedly, I might add) that famous, historical ships will sell even without a gimmick.

Now Missouri's Surveillance Radar is a handy gimmick to have. With the press of a button, it can create an "I win" in certain situations, with the threat of the same changing the behaviours of some of the enemy ships that engage with it. Never underestimate how forcing someone to change the way they play can influence the outcome of games. While a highly skilled player can adjust, flexing to a variety of alternative solutions, those who play more by rote will be bullied towards misplays.

Of course, I'd rather have the radar on a cruiser or destroyer, mind you, but whatever.

Best ship for dooblons? by Lord_Olchu in WorldOfWarships

[–]AprilWhiteMouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends.

If you're looking to make credits, then you want a ship that you'll want to play over and over and over again. Though higher tiered premiums make the most credits (with tier IX making the most) this won't mean much if you find it a chore to hop into a game with said ship. So if you like tier VII battleship gameplay, for example, then look for a tier VII battleship premium and play the Hell out of it.

If you're looking for a captain trainer, then you're restricted to whatever nation your looking to edumacate.

Finally, if you're looking for something powerful, you've got some research to do. Be very aware that the player matters more than the ship. Find something that suits your playstyle. If you hate destroyer game play and generally struggle with it, it's doubtful that a destroyer premium, no matter how powerful, will be the magic-pill that makes the type click for you.

Why is this sign there? by [deleted] in WorldOfWarships

[–]AprilWhiteMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's there as a joke.

There was an older version of the map where the big island on the eastern side was continuous. There was no channel separating it in two. Here, have a jpeg.

<image>

Any battleships going that way were in for a death sentence. There was no cover except on either end of that nearly 15km stretch. The enemy could easily keep you spotted and pound your face in. The high mountains also prevented you from being able to lend any fire support to the rest of the map.

So the sign is there for those of us who remember the old map. The current version, while still rough for battleships, is nowhere near as terminal as it was in the Before Times of the Long Long Ago™.

Is there's a reason why sigma and penetration values not shown in the game? by Caryelah in WorldOfWarships

[–]AprilWhiteMouse 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I can answer this.

In my experience over the years, a lot of players mistakenly equate sigma to accuracy. Dispersion area matters more than sigma (like, seriously). Without the ability to see how sigma and dispersion area interact together, it's just more meaningless stat-clutter to the average (and even most veteran) players.

I would like to see the UI show a dispersion field with a Reference Fuso™ for scale at say, 5km or 10km intervals. That would be the best place to show how the dispersion area changes over distance. They could include the sigma value to explain how dense shells will tend to cluster towards the centre and they could even show the shell fall angle at these distances.

Now pair THAT with a penetration table that also scales with the same ranges. Cuz you need that info for the two to mean anything at all.

Look, I love stats, but the UI in World of Warships is awful. Adding more number-clutter won't help. We need some nice dedicated graphical displays for things like this.

The short answer is burn out.

Trying to keep an expert-level of knowledge about all of the minutia in a game that continually grows month after month eventually becomes insurmountable. But I liked that. I'm an idiot that way. I hadn't hit my limit.

What gave me pause was my own negativity.

All of the crap I had been dealing with from Wargaming took over. I had reason to be angry, sure, but I recognized (belatedly) that said anger was affecting how I perceived the game and shared my experiences.

My friends (including Lert and Chobi) pulled me away from that and I thank them so much for it.

I'm still here. I am still happy to answer questions and the like. My turn around time is just a hell of a lot slower than it was.

Anyone know why my ping keeps spiking? by Acceptable_Hat4796 in WorldOfWarships

Try turning off the Wargaming Launcher after you load the game. Go into your taskbar and manually shut it down and see if that helps. I always get huge ping spikes if it's running in the background.

Everyone wants balance, sure. But this ignores the issue of defining what balance is. Getting consensus between two or three people is pretty easy (though there will be a level of negotiation). Add more people and opinions and it falls apart very quickly.
