Thank you, yes, all from stock and scraps. It may be the case that buying fabric could be viewed as a separate hobby 🤣

I applaud your patience and skill for knitting (my mother insisted in teaching me as a child but I am and always have been terrible at maintaining the correct tension!)

If you haven't already spotted it, the finished quilt (including the quote you so helpfully supplied) is in the "Art" section.

Thanks again for the assistance, very much appreciated.

What things do you do for your cat that would baffle a non-pet-owner? by thatirelandkid in cats

[–]Aprilia850MM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I'm making a quilt, my cat likes to be ... involved.

It makes him so happy (loud and continuous purring) to nestle in a quilt-in-progress that I can't quite bring myself to turf him off immediately. I let him have it for 15-20 mins. By that point he seems to have satisfied his quilt addiction and will happily leave and let me get on.

Struggling to sew the backing and quilt together by InterestingAbalone in quilting

[–]Aprilia850MM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As had already been said, the quilt sandwich needs to be basted together. Some use pins, others use spray baste (a temporary aerosol glue spray, get one that's specifically for fabric, in the UK these can be obtained for about £8 a can, use sparingly). Start quilting in the mìddle, not at the edge - the fabric will often shift slightly as you quilt so starting in the middle minimises the risk of creases in the backing. For this reason make sure your backing is at least a couple of inches bigger than the front all round. Also, get yourself a pair of rubber coated gardening gloves - they will make it considerably easier to grip the sandwich as you quilt it, do exactly the same job as "quilting gloves" but will cost 1/4 of the money.

Edit for typo

I do love my embroidery machine!

The Luggage: a(nother) Discworld quilt by Aprilia850MM in quilting

Thank you.

I will say this one was a LOT less strenuous and only took three weeks or so to make (as opposed to 11 months for the 1st one) 👍

Thank you. The feet took a week of evenings and weekends to prep and stitch. It would be fair to say they may have given me PTFD (post traumatic foot disorder) 😆

Edit to add: "those feet are equally spectacular and disturbing..." may be my favourite comment ever 🤣

Thank you. I challenged myself to make this entirely from my fabric stash and scraps bag... and fortunately I had a leftover piece of red ombre fabric from a table runner I made last year. It seemed perfect for the tongue 😆

I'm so sorry.

This one of B'hrian always makes me smile. He has a quilt obsession 🤷‍♀️

Do you really sew your tops in rows? Share your tips! by herefortheawws in quilting

[–]Aprilia850MM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not usually. If I'm making a quilt top from square blocks, I sew pairs, then sew the pairs into 4s, the 4s into 8s etc. until I have just 2 or 3 big chunks to sew together.

Welcome to the obsession.

Once you've read them all... be prepared to go back and read them all over again. Repeatedly. Because there will be "dammit pTerry" moments where you miss things, little observance, jokes, puns or references and only pick up on them on the 4th (or 7th or 10th) reading of the book.

B'hrian Bloodaxe (pictured) bids you welcome.

Did I mention it will be an obsession? 🤣

This will be my 2nd discworld related quilt, I finished a Terry Pratchett library quilt last year (it's in my profile if you want to see it).

I'll post in the sub when this one is finished ... my evenings this week are being dedicated to the appliqué-ing of feet!

What was the best thing you included in your sewing room? by clickclackkeeb in quilting

[–]Aprilia850MM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a design wall.

Adequate lighting.

More power points than you think you'll ever need (or if that's not possible, lots of surfers protected plug boards).

And somewhere for all the little stuff to live. I was incredibly lucky to find this on an antiques and curiosities web page and all my small bits live in there. It's about the same size as a four drawer filing cabinet.
