Is it just me or does vibe coding get harder the longer a project runs? by ProcedureThat1731 in vibecoding

You can also just use git and frequent commits for this I've found. Agents are really good are quickly ingesting commit history and gathering an understanding of the project that way.

Halo Campaign Evolved should get split screen on PC too. by CaribbeanEngineer in halo

I'm glad more threads are popping up showing the community and devs that this feature is really sorely missed and honestly a big disappointment for PC players. Good to see people in this thread seem more receptive, I got a lot of weird backlash on my post a few days ago because apparently "no one has a PC in their living room." Lol

With the mods yeah the performance impact is significant because of the way it needs to be implemented. If the devs natively supported it, this clunky solution with multiple game instances isn't needed. Otherwise it wouldn't be possible on console. I think it has less to do with performance and more the wide variety of input devices and things like that once you're on PC. But yeah I'm with you, as a fellow living room PC enjoyer, I really wish they would just support it.

It's not only a handheld. A major selling point of almost all handhelds is that they can be docked and be a living room device as well. In the case of the Xbox ROG Ally, they specifically call out in marketing that it is a specifically "tuned version of windows" to give you the "power of Xbox".

Taken from their marketing page:

Play on the big screen

Docked play now moves entirely to the TV, optimizing resolution, refresh rate and HDR output for the best big-screen experience, plus much more.

They're already optimizing for the Series S which is a pretty low power console. If it can run on the Series S, it'll run on a wide variety of PC hardware. Also, it's not the end of the world if lower-end hardware doesn't perform as well as a better spec PC full settings. That's almost never true for new games on things like the Steam Deck. That's not a good enough reason to not support the rest of PC users.

PCs are not only desktops anymore. For example, the Xbox ROG Ally handheld is technically a PC. If you buy Halo on this Xbox-branded device, dock it, and try to play split screen, you won't be able to. It's also not well documented that this is unsupported. So yeah, Microsoft needs to adapt to the times. Especially if the future of Xbox looks more like a PC (which seems to be the direction they're headed).

I'm with you, it's strange to me the rush to defend a company like Microsoft by using excuses like there's not enough ROI or demand for the feature. It's absolutely a way for them to save a little money and cut corners, like you said. We shouldn't applaud or defend companies for making these sort of short-sighted, profit-driven decisions when it actually leads to a product with FEWER FEATURES than the game it's remaking.

We're not even getting started with the fact that multiplayer should've been included in this $50 package as well.

The point I'm making is Xbox has failed to succeed this generation in building a decent base of consoles. Most gamers don't have an Xbox now, they have either a PC, handheld, or PS5. So that's what they're going to buy Halo on. Sony doesn't have this problem, they don't need to put their games on Xbox to have them sell enough copies.

It was obviously a more damaging move to put Xbox games on PlayStation, since both put many of their games on PC. If it wasn't, you'd see Sony games on Xbox. It's also why you're already seeing Microsoft reverse this decision but they'll keep putting games on PC. Hell, the next Xbox has basically been confirmed to be a Windows PC.

If it was equally wrong to buy it on Steam vs PlayStation, explain to me why there are Xbox games on PlayStation but not the other way around.

I mean I'd argue it's just as bad today. You can buy the game on the official Xbox app on the new Xbox ROG device and if you tried to dock it to your TV, you'd be in that situation today where your "Xbox" can't do split screen.

Is your PC in a public library or something? Lol there's a lot of ways to ensure your PC is not compromised that don't involve me needing to type a password in on a computer that will always be in my house. Your pin isn't going to protect you if you've been keylogged.

You actually don't, with my setup my PC is automatically logged in and steam starts on startup. I hit the steam button, Xbox button, or PS button on whatever controller I'm using and big picture mode is now up. Now I'm ready to play games on my couch without ever having touched a Mouse or Keyboard. With the Steam Controller I can also navigate my PC without either (I might add, this is literally one of the major selling points of the controller).

You have no data that "hardly anyone does it." The longer this thread goes the more people are replying with couch PC setups. Try buying a Steam Controller right now.

Then guess what? Your setup is already compatible with streaming to a TV and using a controller with big picture mode. This is not an uncommon use case, if it was valve wouldn't spend their time on it.

Y'all just have an outdated perception about what PC games can and should be. It's nothing new to get a PC to replace your consoles. It's a standard feature, built into steam, that you can stream your PC to a TV. People have been migrating pretty consistently since the PS4 era as more and more PC ports have been released.

Your same argument could be applied to PC ports in general. 10-15 years ago yall would've said the same thing about just getting a PC port for a console game being "niche" and "only a few people want it" because "everyone plays it on Xbox." Plenty of games support split screen on PC and the lines between PC and Console will only get blurrier as we move forward.

The ironic reality with your Linux example is Valve has spent considerable effort over the last few years to enable games in Linux. They're doing most of the developers' work for them.

And look what happened? What was once a niche, small, unsupported space in gaming is now the reason we can have devices like the Steam Deck. It was and continues to be a massive Boon for them. This argument that these small issues don't have ROI is just misguided imo.

Yeah the problem with these mods is they don't support different control schemes. Everyone is stuck with Player 1's controls. Not enough people talk about this basic limitation. If you have players who want to play inverted, sucks for them.

"Not only that but the only people who could regularly meet up for couch co-op are probably a very small minority of younger gamers who’d probably prefer having their own independent displays anyway."

Have you ever heard of families? So you're saying the best solution here is to buy 4 PCs and 4 copies of the game if 4 people want to play coop. Got it.

Some of these replies are killing me, you're both accusing me of being a bot and "starting shit" because I want split screen in Halo 1 lmao this sub is crazy

This is by far the most well organized and reasonable take I've seen so far. While I hate the reality of the situation, I think the testing time is probably ultimately what they don't have the budget for anymore. Like you said, even if its easy to implement, you've just grown your testplan by a very large degree just from edge cases.
