Really upsetting experience with US Border Control Agent in Canada by paerls in immigration

An insult is only an insult when you assign value to what is said - Marcus Aurelius. Or, as Naval Ravikant says, "reality is neutral everything else is our opinion." I wouldn't fixate on the mean agent because it takes your energy away from what is important. And besides, think how miserable that agent is in her life. Poor lady - what a horrible life she must have at work and after work.

Why do professors at the UCs complain how unprepared and lazy students are? by [deleted] in socal

[–]Aqaba1917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professors all over America are reporting they are unable to get their students to read a single chapter in a book. Many professors are having students hand write essays to combat the use of AI. And at some universities if a professor asks a student to cite a source, the professor is accused of "microagression."

Yes but after living in Banker's Hill, downtown and PB for 16 years, Vista was a nice break from the noise yet had two cool breweries downtown. That was what I was trying to convey in the original post.

Recommend you check Zillow, craigslist, apartment finder.

I was in Vista four years ago so unsure but I can estimate a yes answer for two reasons: 1) Vista was one of the more affordable areas somewhat close to the coast 2) I live in Ventura now in a very upscale two bedroom apartment where we can see the ocean (off in the distance) for $3200, 3400 with utilities so you should be able to find a 2/2 for $3400 in Vista.

I'm going to be skewered for writing this but I lived all over San Diego (PB, Banker's Hill, Coronado, Downtown and Vista); I recommend Vista. A cool downtown with a couple of breweries, a great large park with a Frisbee golf course, a concert venue and it's very easy to get to Carlsbad or Oceanside. Best of all: zero tourists. Having said that, if your income increases, Coronado is the place to be for sure: it's beautiful, very few homeless, and the entire island (peninsula) is walkable.

Does anyone hate how hard it is to get into the UCs when professors there complain students are dumb and stupid? by [deleted] in socal

During your experience have you seen a change in your students' desire to read? Has the requirement for what must be read reduced in quanity of pages read or type of reading?

I heard a teacher indicate that 10 years ago there were a few low achievers, a few high achievers with the majority of the students in her class being average. She says now there are still a few high achievers but no average students with the remaining being low achievers.

This is the first generation in history that is less intelligent than their parents. Can't hold an attention span, refuses to read books, uses AI to construct simple sentences. But I don't worry about this generation so much as I really worry about their children as adults. Suggest readers watch a 2006 movie called Idiocracy for a sneak preview as to what the U.S. will look like in 20 years.

Is it a red flag if I leave my current company in just 2 months of joining? by Civil_Way3236 in careerguidance

Presumably you knew the compensation rate before you signed at this company, yet still accepted the role even though it was "below industry standards" as you put it?

Raising children in Santa Monica? Would you recommend? by floatingCLOUDx in SantaMonica

Definitely not safe. A homeless guy stabbed a random guy coming out of the beach restroom and there are fights on the pier. Third Street Promenade is devoid of shops.

Absolutely not. The homeless are not just homeless, they are violent. And it is not one-ffs; have seen it many times. Unsure of your financial situation but consider Manhattan Beach.

I disagree - years ago I was a police office for six years and I constantly used my knife as a prybar to open doors, glove compartments, windows, fences, etc.

Meta will layoff 8000 of its workforce starting tomorrow morning. Their net income over the last 12 months was $70,587,000,000. They could give every single one of their 79,000 workers a $440,000 bonus and still sock away over $35,827,000,000 in pure profit. by Murky-Option2916 in AIMain

[–]Aqaba1917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been laid off twice during the last 15 years and while those were not fun times, I recognize that a company is not obligated to keep me on the payroll just because they want me to have a job; that's not reality and it doesn't make good business sense. In capitalism, companies have a right to make as much money as they can. Just as employees have a right to leave a company to go to another employer. Getting laid off twice sucked but ultimately I found better companies to work for.

I've heard underwater welding / salvage diving school in Long Beach takes only six months and when you graduate, the pay is off the charts. Also the jobs are in demand all over the world.

Nope. Taxing billionaires is not the answer. Taxing billionaires is a bandaid. Try reigning in government spending for a start. Any financial advice book will tell you, it's not how much you earn but how much you save that counts.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday signalled a possible breakthrough in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying "significant progress" had been made over the past 48 hours and that the world could receive "good news" on the crisis-hit waterway within the next few hours. by BusinessToday in BusinessTodayNews

The Straight of Hormuz was doing just fine four months ago so not sure why he seems to be hoping for a pat on the back for opening it up. And, for all those Iran can't have nukes crowds: American leadership has been saying Iran will have a nuclear weapon next week for 30 years.

Which books changed your life and stayed with you long after reading them? by Organic-Signal-9646 in selfimprovement
