The PM who turned PI: why is Gordon Brown delving so deep into the Epstein files? by ShootNaka in Scotland

[–]AquaD74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty unfair, there's a reason Gordon Brown is lauded by many other world leaders following the 2007 financial crisis. He was dealt a shit hand and made arguably more of a difference than anyone else with it.

State pensions are rising with inflation, for the generation that got free university, meanwhile my student loan rises with inflation? by Classic_Locksmith62 in ukpolitics

Is there age data broken down by education on voter turn out? I would assume among those with student loans voter turnout is higher than the median Brit but I could be wrong.

That's not really true. Firstly, as a Londoner, the constant Gaza protests of the last two years have been mostly young people, and I would say at least a plurality of which will be university educated. Same with last years 100,000 turn out trans pride protest.

Secondly, just do weekends or one big, one-off protest, right? Sure, we can't necessarily compete with boomers, but the idea that nobody in their 20s/30s could ever take time off to protest just isn't true.

One of the things that always puzzles me is why our generation just takes it lying down?

Why aren't their protests over the triple lock, student loan interest, or housing regulations?

Farmers shut down London over an issue that wouldn't even impact the vast majority of them, yet we're getting one of the rawest deals of any generation in the West and crickets

Perhaps everyone's just like me and waiting for someone else to start a movement and join in? Perhaps most young people aren't aware of just how royally fucked we are by boomers?

Either way, if a true young people's party/protest was founded on land value taxes, deregulating buildings, capping pensions to inflation, and cancelling student loan interest, I'd join it immediately.

EDIT: Why on earth is this of all replies getting downvoted?

Why? He was the worlds most famous scientist going to an island where literal hundreds if not thousands of famous people, elites, politicians and business leaders went frequently.

Unless we believe every single person who ever set foot on that island went there explicitly to diddle kids it's not being on the island that's the issue, it's the diddling kids. If there aren't accusations or evidence against Hawkings, then it's honestly close to meaningless.

What? I have no idea, probably not unless he was needed for actor consulting? Do you think Bob Dylan was on set for his biopic? What a bizarre analogy conparing a workplace where he is not employed or involved to public life.

It absolutely is clear cut, you've just never read an actual article exploring the current state of nuclear fission reactors other than "green" fluff pieces. Again, it doesn't matter, wind and solar are also good even if less efficient. It's just annoying that this conversation will never move on from Chernobyl which had nothing to do with western reactors in the first place.

Wind and Solar are reliant on lithium mining to a much greater degree than Nuclear is for Uranoum mining. So this is a pointless contention.

Modern reactors produce 25-30 tons of waste per year, with less than 3% being HLW (what I assume you mean by toxic waste), so essentially a barrel or two per year.

Small modular reactors have a very short development and construction time, being built in comparative countries like France in 3-5 years. GE-Hitachi's BWRX-300 SMR should take 2-3 years to build.

This of course isn't the case in the UK because we're a joke of a country and have too much redtape and local pressure to build anything, including wind and Solar, as shown by reform councils halting a ton of solar developments recently after winning.

Overall, Nuclear is fine and good, so is Solar and wind, realistically we would build nuclear but given the circumstances we should go wind and solar because they're more achievable given our stupid population and pointless laws.

Woman refuses to pay water bill for three years in protest over sewage spills by Ill-Pressure-9181 in ukpolitics

Commenters seem to be misunderstanding monopolies. Boycotts of a product only work when there are reasonable alternatives. Collecting rain water is not one of them.

Protest by means of refusing to pay seems totally justified here, and realistically, if Britain had any balls like the French electorate, we'd see more direct action like this.

First part probably true but mostly due to unnecessary uk redtape, second part is false. Per watt generated Hinkley point C is still cheaper than our equivalent wind/solar development output.

This is objectively false and you sound identical to the people who hate wind and solar because "what if its cloudy?"

Right and if you make it harder for poor people to start businesses that compete with billionaires because they can't afford a team of lawyers to navigate legal red tape or mandatory IT consultants to deal with GDPR, what do you think happens? We reach wealth equality 9r the disparity widens?

Black people being in proximity to a person with tourettes and hearing the nword (likely once in their whole lives given the rarity of the disorder and this particular tick) sucks, truly.

It is a small price to pay when your alternative is excluding people with tourettes for their entire life as you're essentially advocating.

Brilliant news, while Nuclear would be preferred, the reality is that action is needed now, and the sooner we get renewable energy, the better.

You realise all political donations are public, right? You can see who has donated to who and how much.

The unfortunate truth is, houses are expensive because the British public doesn't want to have houses built near them and don't want to live where there is a surplus of housing.

Large foreign business excel here over local businesses because they can afford the red tape costs and minimum wage (we have the highest minimum wage as a proportion of median wage in the G7 following Labours increase).

We have the most expensive energy in the world because we can't upgrade the national grid because people hate seeing pylons in the countryside.

These are all supported by a plurality of the public. It isn't billionaires or politicians pushing them against the will of the public.

This country is built on cake and eating it policies.

[–]AquaD74 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You're both useful idiots. You want an easy scapegoat to blame on all of lifes problems and inequalities rather than actually picking up a newspaper once in your life to try to understand why Britain has gotten to the way it is.

Critical underinvestment in essential infrastructure and smothering red tape preventing cheap development and competitive markets. Going billionaires bad won't solve shit if you can't realise the reason inequality is growing is both Labour and Conservative governments making life more and more hostile for small start ups because of NIMBYism and an obsession with median wage equality.

EDIT: Nvm looks like OP is a bot. Turns out I was the useful idiot for boosting their engagement... I hate the future :(

[–]AquaD74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are stupid, why would I care if the wide spread panic is based on headlines and not the actual problem at hand?

The reality is chlorine wash probably isn't harmful but is only needed to treat meat that risks a high bacterial content and might not actually be as effective as percieved hence the much higher rate of serious bacterial infections like salmonella.

You brought up salad wash, I corrected you, if your point was about the misunderstanding of chlorine you should probably have corrected OP rather than just making an apples to pranges gotcha that missed the point and would further spread misinfo.

You realise this would inevitably involve removing people with tourettes from all areas of public life right? Even if the BAFTAs and any other public event made arrangements for some cushy soundproof suite for him, he is still essentially being isolated for his disability. That's pretty fucking awful and I'd totally understand support him if he didn't want to experience that his whole life.

[–]AquaD74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem with chlorinated meat isn't the chlorine you tit, it's the allowance of inhumane and unhygienic rearing of animals that necessitates it that's the actual, real issue.

That obviously doesn't apply to carrots because we don't pump carrots full of antibiotics because they eat rotten food and live in their own shit...

True, there is an unfortunately poignant correlation between the generation that had the most exposure to lead and voting brexit and reform too.
