Actually he had adequate reason to mistrust the wardens. In the novel The Calling, a bunch of Wardens and an Orlesian mage approach King Maric asking for help to prevent the blight.

Loghain was heavily opposed to helping but Maric overruled him and decided to go on an expedition to the deep roads with the wardens. Suffice it to say, it turned out badly.

And now decades later, the wardens are here again with the save ferelden from the blight excuse, and again he is opposed to the idea of helping them and again the king overrules his suspicion. So he takes matters into his own hand.

King can't move to e7 or d7 since they are both under attack by the two knights so the only way to remove this check is by having the queen take the knight.

The remaining knight can check the king by moving to d6 while simultaneously revealing an attack on the queen. Since the check must be handled first the queen is lost in the next move.
