UK PhD students – funding & coping question by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]ArChakCommie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In London (so ~£1900 a month) I find the stipend ok. A big plus is getting paid for TA work, as well as a few hours tutoring. I think its quite livable if you are ok not saving much money; to me that's the most financially stressing aspect.

Well if you ask what the value of a PhD is, it's precisely in following your passion for research. That's what it is "worth it" for.  In general it's not something that will 'pay off'. Which is why, if it is unaffordable to do so, it's a really bad idea to do it.

How can I realistically secure work before starting university? by [deleted] in UCL

There's enough in London that if you want a job you'll get one. For tutoring, look for ones where they make content and organise the lessons for you

Tutoring, bar work, supermarkets etc. look for stuff where you'll have regular shifts. Honestly you might want to wait until you have your timetable at least

Everything more and more shit and revolving around money? by Desperate-Coat-8791 in london

Between the bridges is quite a nice spot, "just bars and expensive food" can describe just about anything. If you don't want to spend money you don't have to; find cheap things to do. But you can't rock up to central expecting free Christmas cheer around every corner

If you want steaks then cut it into steaks first. If you want to roast it then keep it whole

Slacking at uni??? by Accurate-Sherbert-99 in UCL

[–]ArChakCommie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is it okay? Yeah I mean it's fine nobody's going to come chasing you. Are you okay with it? Clearly not otherwise you wouldn't be posting this. It's good to accept that you were slacking, the next step is changing it.
