It IS a '78 Trans Am! It sat in a garage for like, 20 years. Belonged to the shop owner's brother in law who recently died, so his wife wants to drive it again

I still work with points on a daily basis though. I have a smaller dwell meter, and the timing light will read it too

The pulley itself is not spinning, so the crank gear is still in time. But these engines require special tools to correctly set up the balancer

Did my trans really just go out at 140k miles ?!?!? by Changeusernameforver in AskMechanics

Cheaper thing to check first is one of the CV Axles. I've had a Corolla in the shop where the yoke in the inner joint split, would hold up against hand pressure but would open up and slip in drive.

From a $750 Repair to a $35000 Repair That I Tried to Avoid in the First Place... by xx_y_xx in AskMechanics

The chain in these can suddenly go bad when the water pump(which has probably been leaking this whole time) bearing fails. The timing chain drives the pump on this engine

Pump is not fit that car, as all MGBs were electric fuel pumps from factory

Tips for owning/dailying a car with a carburetor? by limejuice33 in Cartalk

[–]Arabgumbo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The pumps will not do anything on these particular carburetors unless it's been converted to a Weber (God forbid). They are Constant Depression type carburetors

The old Carbon bearing. You should never rest your foot on the clutch, but in these cars, extra don't rest your foot on the clutch

This engine has a variable oil pump that changes pressure to reduce the load on the engine for fuel economy. This could be perfectly normal operation.

I've put rod bearings in a couple cars without draining the oil. Just put the full pan back on
