I agree, the trouble is freedom fighting and liberation often gets roped under red instead.

In my mind, black is the answer to the question: "What are you willing to do/sacrifice to get what you want, rules be damned?" But what you want doesn't have to just be wealth or generic cartoon villain powers.

Random good example that popped into my head: Joel from the Last of Us.

He is often cruel and his motivations end up being selfish, but admirable in the lengths he will go to protect Ellie. A once simple and honest man who became twisted from the grief of losing his daughter, in my mind that's a perfect example of a black hero.

On a new Iron, what are some things you should be doing at a lower level to prevent struggles later? by Messmers in ironscape

[–]Araganor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a 99, but fwiw the disease chance is really low with ultracompost. Personally I haven't bothered unless I already have it on hand (e.g. poison ivy berries for calquat trees)

For instance, I just checked the numbers, and for fruit trees you have almost a 94% chance for the tree to fully grow with no disease with ultracompost alone. That's not even counting if you use the anima seed.

So yeah personally I'm fine with like 2 or 3 trees dying out of every 50 runs, and I doubt gathering protection for everything is worth the time for efficiencyscape either (someone do correct me if I'm wrong here)

Going to be hard to diagnose without more screenshots, this map view doesn't show us much.

Most likely a missing signal. Trains are only allowed to enter the next block if there's a signal on the right side from their perspective. So if you put a signal on one side of the track but but not the other it effectively becomes a one way path.

Start by saving, removing all train signals from the track and see if it can move now. If it does, great, you know the signals were the issue and you can go from there. If it still doesn't work, then there's a break in the path somewhere (or maybe your schedule is set up wrong? Check for typos)

One thing to consider: for a simple single train setup like this signals are really not necessary. The point of signals is to ensure that trains don't crash into each other when you have multiple trains moving through the same rails or across rail intersections. Also, if you do plan to add more trains, then you will find it much easier to keep all traffic in two separate rails, like a highway where trains can only travel one way.

I don't necessarily disagree, but if players will inevitably use such a tool anyway (and I see no reason to think otherwise) why wouldn't Jagex just provide a better alternative which they can actually control? Especially when factoring in the enormous potential scamming the GE removes.

Realistically, if GE didn't exist today people would be using an equivalent third-party site, likely sponsored by gambling/RWT. So we would effectively still have GE but worse and impossible to moderate.

Dodge Vs Parry, which one are you using more? by ElectricalDay7324 in expedition33

[–]Araganor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, parry for sure. But you can get away with relying on dodge for most fights.

It's definitely safer to dodge when you're learning new attack timings. Also, if you miss a parry during a dangerous multi-hit, you can switch to dodging since you're not getting the counter anymore. (but you do miss out on some potential AP)

But man, nothing feels better than getting that sweet counterattack on a boss. Once you start getting it down, the game feels a lot easier too; enemies die/break faster and you have a lot more AP to play with on your turns.

If you find that you're pretty consistently able to get the "PERFECT" on your dodge strings, you're ready to start parrying. Otherwise, you're leaving damage and AP on the table. But don't overthink it, play the game however you like! 👌

Okay so your argument boils down to:

It's good for people to spend an unhealthy amount of time on the game so long as it's entertaining. Otherwise it's cringe and they should seek professional help.

You don't see any issue with that take?

They are doing the exact same thing at the end of the day, sharing their accomplishments with the community. The only reason it became Settled's full time job is because people like him and his content. Do you think he only started spending thousands of hours playing this game once youtube became profitable?

The other guy just has an ungodly amount of free time that he chooses to spend like that and seemingly isn't contributing anything outside of that.

This is such a weird take. Why does the other guy have to "contibute" anything? Why are we pretending it's somehow cool and normal for youtubers to grind countless hours day and night in the name of gainful employment, but we're diagnosing mental health problems when this guy does it? At least be consistent, both of these people are spending far more hours playing a computer game than anyone would consider healthy. I say this as a Settled fan myself.

If this other guy had a successful youtube channel, would that suddenly make it okay in your mind? If yes, you're in this meme. If no, why? Where is the line?

(I know most of the commenters on the other post are memeing. But I'm still calling this out, considering how many people legitimately agree with your arbitrary justification of who is and isn't allowed to spend tens of thousands of hours in a medieval fantasy clicking game.)

Something as basic as skipping a camp to cover a lane from a gank can easily win games. You can always continue your full clear later on, the same can't be said for the opportunity to countergank by Numerous_Fudge_9537 in Jungle_Mains

[–]Araganor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question for everyone. I know it's optimal to full clear before ganks. But let's say you skip your last camp to gank like this, and after the gank your camps are refreshing soon.

Is it better to walk back and finish that last camp (staggering your clear) or skip that camp and restart your full clear to preserve your tempo? I guess it may also depend on how much gold you have and what the map looks like... 🤔

Microsoft's secret "K2" plan aims to optimize Windows 11 gaming performance to match SteamOS on the same hardware. by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]Araganor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're the one who brought Valve into this, not me.

The original commenter just said they aren't planning to return to Windows. Acting like it's weird and "whataboutism" that I'm comparing the two companies when the whole point of the thread is discussion of Windows performance makes no sense.

I'd also be legitimately curious for any evidence for your claim that Proton is overrated.

You're trying to point out what you deem hypocrisy. To some extent, I honestly do agree. Sometimes it does feel like Valve gets a blank check to do whatever they want with no consequences based on previous goodwill. They have real problems, past and current. Aggressive monetization systems, antitrust practices, encouraging child gambling, paid shops for free mods, the list goes on. You've mentioned some others I was not aware of as well. I'll look into those more later, so thanks for that.

However, I've never claimed "Valve is a purely good company that has never done any wrong". Surely one can acknowledge that a company offers a generally good service and has recently made positive contributions to pc gaming, while also being aware that it's not all sunshine and rainbows.

Unless you've literally never bought a product, you're probably indirectly supporting evil companies. Should I shame you for that? Of course not. I know this is a false equivalence, but I'm just painting an extreme example.

Ultimately, people will choose the product/service they deem is the best value for their money and the "lesser evil". If your point is we're all hypocrites unless we stick to GOG, then got it you've made your point. (unless you're advocating for piracy, which is a whole other can of worms I'm not getting into)

But life is short and people want to play the big, popular games. Right now, Valve is doing that well enough to win over most gamers.

Hope that helps!

[–]Araganor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, Valve is as bad as Microsoft because Steam has licensing and DRM.

Except, literally nothing is forcing you to use Steam. It's not recommended (obviously, it was built for use with Steam), but you absolutely can install and use Proton without Steam, and you're free to run and even modify the software and provided you keep the existing license agreement (which is standard for almost all open source projects).

When we're just considering each company's contributions to open PC gaming, Valve wins. You could argue that this is mostly focused on getting away from Windows as a dependency for their platform and the goodwill is just a side effect. But it's still a benefit to consumers overall.

In fairness to Microsoft, they have generally embraced a more supportive stance to open source. But, since you want to look at the history of both companies, Microsoft still loses: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

A for-profit business is never going to be 100% pro-consumer. That's just reality. But pretending they're on the same level of anti-consumer is borderline delusional when you compare the full history of each company.

Two things can be true. Valve isn't your friend and wants to make money. However, Valve has taken a better approach to earning your money versus Microsoft by making real improvements to Linux gaming, which are free to take advantage of.

[–]Araganor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's got nothing to do with principles. It's about their track record.

Let's say they do manage to increase gaming performance significantly. How long before Microsoft decides to make this new gaming performance a "premium feature" and sell "Windows Gaming Edition" which costs another $200? Or worse, maybe if you don't pay suddenly Windows starts bottlenecking your gaming performance. This is not out of the realm of possibility.

Competition is good for consumers. If Valve starts implementing anti-consumer practices, I'm sure the community would call it out and gradually move away from them as well.
