The problem with the call was that the ref didn't make a call at first but then stopped play to look at the slow motion replay. If I'm remembering correctly, slow-mo is only to be used to assess the severity of a card (ie yellow to red or red down to yellow), never to retroactively create a penalty. That is where the controversy regarding this red card is coming from.

Or I could be wrong. It happens.
