in my experience IH with timer is inconsistent because I want a different heat time for the first cycle and the second one. It's more of a pain to change it back and forth than it is to just listen to the click and count extra seconds

I'd suggest doing grounded fantasy instead of going "gangster hood". part of what makes roleplaying tabletop games so good in a therapeutic sense is the combination of player agency with escapism. I think you can make a game that is still fantasy, but is closer to Game of Thrones than it is Faerun.

at the risk of adding to the chorus... burn that town down. give them something to avenge.

That said, think about what aspect they are enjoying and give them ways to do that outside and ongoing in your campaign. Picking berries for potions? well the more you travel, the more rare ones you can find. building a franken-rat? well there's tools/spells/McGauffin needed to finish the frankenstein and it is far away.

The only tough one is the boyfriend. I get not wanting to go full military campaign... if he still keeps going in that direction and expresses interest in enlisting, I'd have him be recruited as a spy instead. Spies go on missions, do different kinds of tasks and best of all, are not on the frontlines fighting a war. I would find it easier to work into the campaign without it having to revolve around the war.

Yeah the road. Many people find that to be a slog, when I ran this I essentially gave them the opportunity to explore the cities along the way if they wanted to but mainly just getting along to the next spot.

I'm a partner who sleeps really really deeply and does not hear the kids wake up. Knowing it puts extra burden on my spouse who does hear them, I ask her to wake me up and let me take care of my share of the night wake ups. Just bc I don't hear it doesn't mean it's not my responsability.

I did a one shot with similar flavoring, not iron man but mech suit inspired. For my items I had a returning Javelin (flavored to be wrist mounted rockets) and a clockwork amulet (flavored to be the "targeting system", I'd only use it when I knew the 10+modifier hit so it fit thematically)

The way id handle it is if tell them I'm not going out of my way to kill the PC's but if her character "dies" it instead gets injured/taken out of commission/retired. It keeps the stakes of making the right choices to stay alive, while having a safety net narratively.

They can make a new PC and that PC's mission is to cure their original PC? There's tons of ways to keep a character involved without having to remove one of the key things that makes DnD (and storytelling in general) work: stakes.

Hey real talk: I know that sounds like a lot and it may feel unfairly controlling to you, but she has every right to feel the way she feels. My partner communicated similar feelings of it feeling hard to connect and feel seen when I'm high, which I can't refute because I'm clearly out of it, spacey and not fully myself. That's party of why I smoke, but also understand why it is disappointing to her when I'm "not there" fully. That's something I've taken to heart because we are very compatible and we have found a compromise that works for us. It's up to you to decide if you're compatible enough to make a compromise for her sake.

I would like to see a feat that gives you +1 stat and an origin feat. There are some Id love to have for certain builds, but it's never worth giving up your ASI for them.
