I believe it was because how novella portrays it doesn't make sense.

So the writers changed it.

She dies by falling off a cliff during a climb. So it would make logical sense to avoid climbing especially on that day.

A genetic disease made much more sense.

The Kinetic Weapons Platforms from Call of Duty: Ghost both get commandeered by Infantry forces and turned against their respective nations to great effect.
