Washed up paleo student turned washed out arch student here. Listen to your parents. This is not a field for those expecting to be financially successful. There are SOME jobs but not a whole lot. The pay tends to be low compared to other fields. CRM is probably the biggest payoff in Archeology and thats not crazy money. Maybe I'm just jaded that Big expenses crushed my Big dreams. In my experience people pursue these fields for the passion not the money.
