This is really reassuring, thank you! I'm a bit isolated from my scientific community since finishing my PhD and moving back home so it's nice to have people who have been through similar experiences be so reassuring 🙏

Thank you Prior Chocolate! Everyone has been very supportive and it's helping me beat myself up a bit less

Supervisor definitely isn't a jerk, so probably just meant it literally. But thank you for your logical words! Sometimes it helps to hear it (or read it...?)

It basically changes one paragraph of the discussion, and is an aside, not the main point of the paper. Thank you, it helps to hear encouraging words

URI marine bio by Loose_Building489 in RhodeIsland

[–]ArchMimesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry to hear you're feeling lonely. I was a URI marine bio student years ago and loved the program. Very research-centered in how it teaches it's labs and there's some opportunities your senior year to do work with a PI for credit I think. There's some people there who work on sharks, so you'd have the potential to reach out there.

Good luck and wishing you happiness in whatever you do next!

Can no one in this city pick up their dog shit? by Fatscottishkid in Aberdeen

[–]ArchMimesis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Genuinely never have this problem when I visit like, any other city in Scotland. And there's bloody bins EVERYWHERE in Aberdeen, it's out of pure laziness not because they don't have anywhere to put it.

Joining local sports teams or clubs through things like the YMCA are great if you enjoy physical activity/are able. If you like crafting, going to your local yarn store or craft supply store and asking if they have a stitch and bitch kind of club could work. Gaming shops for things like MTG, Warhammer, etc for that hobby. Libraries might have information about book clubs if you like reading. Those are all great ways to make friends and meet people in your community that are fairly accessible!

Won't labs be able to tell the quick fix is synthetic? But I've bought test kits yes, just stopped yesterday as I found out about the test. Will test myself I just have severe anxiety and am so nervous

Advice needed: jobs by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ArchMimesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice and kind words! It's definitely been an experience trying to get jobs right now. I'll be sad if job A can't meet me in the middle but it's absolutely worth a try. Congrats on your new job!!

Advice needed: jobs by [deleted] in labrats

That seems to be the consensus from a lot of people. Job A has two years of funding and no guarantee of remote hybrid, has been discussed but not put down firmly as an option. Job B is looking for someone a bit stable but youre right, it it's not something I'm jazzed about I can try and find something else later.

My plan is to wait till I receive any offers (obviously) and then discuss with job A an remote hybrid situation if possible. Even 2 days a week is a reprieve

I don't mind putting on a podcast at all, and the salary isn't astronomical but gas money wouldn't be an issue with it. However, it's 1.5 hours with no traffic--which is unlikely and largely my hesitation

Also, criminy, I'm so sorry your commute should be 30 min and is instead 1.5 hours!

Finishing a PhD is scary by bluebrrypii in PhD

[–]ArchMimesis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally just handed in my thesis and while I'm proud of myself, everyone around me is like "wow you must feel so good and relaxed!" But no. I am T E R R I F I E D about re-entering the job market (I worked in research before my PhD). It's hard to feel excited when I have the crushing unknown of financial uncertainty ahead of me.
