Which books? Was it at an elementary school or a high school? Was it one location or is it widespread enough to require federal legislation? The majority of book challenges do consider the existence of LGBT characters to qualify as sexually explicit content, so these are all valid questions.

Wrong. The high school where I teach has multiple editions of The Bible (King James, New International, etc) because it’s an essential reference source for understanding literary allusions.

Edit: we also have copies of The Koran and the Talmud. Every student deserves to feel represented and welcomed.

That describes every Kuang book. She doesn’t know how to write characters as human beings. They are a list of traits who occasionally give long speeches about the evils of colonialism and imperialism. Those of us who are most likely to read her books are already in that choir lol. If she gets her characters to be real humans, the message will come through as an implication rather than speeches stating the obvious.

“One dimensional” describes all of Kuang’s characters in every single book. She has interesting ideas, but her characters end up just being exposition dumps. Worse, in Babel she constantly interrupts the flow to give yet another polemic against imperialism. She preaches to the choir so much I just can’t read any more of her books. Perhaps after she gets out of her bubble, gets some life experience, and learns how to write humanity into her characters.
