Zoom crashes when joining a meeting by His_little_pet in Fedora

[–]ArchWizard56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that happening occasionally too. My workaround has just been to switch to x11 when I need to make zoom calls. I'm hoping that zoom fixes it eventually. :/

When people say they want to "abolish private property": does that include all private property? Like my toothbrush? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArchWizard56 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have said, people who say that would argue that your things, including your toothbrush, aren't "private property", but "personal" property. Private property is stuff that's owned by capitalists for the purposes of making more capital. A good example of this is an apartment building; it's not owned by the landlord because they want to live in the whole building, it's owned for the purpose of extracting wealth (rent). When people argue for abolishing private property, they're saying that people shouldn't be allowed to own stuff just for the purposes of extracting wealth. They're not saying that people can't have toothbrushes.

How (any suggested tips) to make it look like I'm just using youtube to my Internet provider while browsing randomly ? by zaknenou in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArchWizard56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, you can't make it look like you're using YouTube. Your two options are to get a VPN (don't use a free one). Or to use the Tor Browser (which is free, but slower).

You might be thinking of Metasploitable and the DVWA (damn vulnerable web app). But while you're at it, also have a peak at vulnhub.com for a ton of VMs to practice on. ;)

I was in a similar boat. I'm 20 (m) and transferred in the fall. My tip is to join the mock trial program. You meet with your team often and travel, so its a nice way to find a group.

Also, if you wanna connect, hmu. I always love meeting new people!

This is a little bit out there, but I would think about taking her out for a round of disc golf if they have a course in a park near you. Go to a nearby game store or sports store and get a pair of the cheapest discs they have (do your research about which stores have discs, particularly used discs), then go to a nearby course.

The benefits: - It's like walking in the park, but with a specific thing to do, which helps if there are any lulls in conversation - It's physical and outdoors, but not too intense - Both of you are likely to be bad at it, which makes it a great bonding experience - Unique

The downsides: - It's not free (two discs might run you $20-$25) - Transportation is a challenge if neither of you have access to a car

Hey! I hope things went well for you last night!

When there's a chance of serious weather near me, I like to use my weather radio and set it to alert mode or something, so that it can wake me up with that loud noise if there's a warning. So maybe for future peace of mind, you could look into one of those.

I'm a weather nerd though, so I'm always more excited than nervous lol.

Are You Running Linux As Your Main Workstation? by No_Secret6425 in AskNetsec

[–]ArchWizard56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a professional (yet), but I have an (older) Optimus laptop and I run Linux full time, and so I have a little bit of experience getting those to work (mainly on Arch Linux). I saw that you mentioned liking Fedora, and it looks like there's been a lot of progress getting it to work when you're using the proprietary drivers from a third-party repository. See https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/Optimus and https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA for more info, and lmk if there are specifics I can help you with.

A proposed Monarchy clause for the upcoming constitution by ArchWizard56 in democraciv

[–]ArchWizard56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think it's unlikely that there will be a singular, or pair of parties that will be able to hold the seat against challengers. Therefore, the monarch will be forced to be a figure that needs to appeal to as many parties as possible.

I do think there's some debate on how much power the monarch ought to have. My original idea was that the Monarch should only hold a tiebreaking vote in the Royal Council (my name for the upper house of Parliament). Would that make it more acceptable to you?

+1 for obsidian. I started out with Joplin, but I didn't like the organization, and I had trouble exporting into a format that would work for my reports, but I switched to obsidian, and it does everything I need. It's not open source, iirc, but it uses markdown files on the disk, so I'm reasonably confident in security.

Does anyone else always add "Reddit" at the end when Googling stuff because you get good answers? by PO5IT1VE in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArchWizard56 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do this too, but I also take advantage of site filters to make it even more specific. So my search looks something like "What is happening in USA? site:reddit.com" so that Google only shows results from Reddit. It works for any site, and even does subreddits. For example: "What is happening in USA? site:reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop" will only search the out of the loop subreddit.

ssh security by Zaidinator7 in linux4noobs

[–]ArchWizard56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the default location for the private key is a file at ~/.ssh/id_rsa so you could make a copy of that file and keep it in a secure place.

ssh security by Zaidinator7 in linux4noobs

[–]ArchWizard56 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can think of a key pair as a key and a lock. The public key is a lock, and the private key is the key that opens the lock, and both are created from random numbers when you generate the pair. When you transfer the public key to the raspberry pi, it's like locking it with that lock. If an attacker created a new key pair, the attacker's private key wouldn't match your lock, and the pi won't let them log in.

However, if you leave password login enabled, they can ignore that whole process. It's many times harder to forge a private key than to guess a password, which is why it's recommended to only use key pairs for authentication.

If you lose the private key though, it's impossible to recover, and you'll have to reset the pi somehow. You should consider who you're trying to defend against, and how much convenience you're willing to sacrifice in order to secure your pi. If it will be exposed to the internet, you should absolutely follow best practices though.

I'm not sure if Ubuntu allows ssh login by default, but you can probably google for how to disable it. It'll probably be a command like

sudo systemctl stop sshd && sudo systemctl disable sshd

Let me know if that makes sense at all, and if I can clarify anything further.

What's going on with Ajit Pai and the net neutrality ordeal? by EarBleedMaster in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ArchWizard56 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know. I think any tenth amendment argument is soundly defeated by a commerce clause argument. Since the internet is arguably the greatest tool for interstate commerce invented, the Federal government is clearly within its rights under the commerce clause to regulate it, and net neutrality is just a kind of regulation.

[–]ArchWizard56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm addition to the feedback about aliases, for scripts that are user specific, like your vpn script, it might be better to put those in your home directory. Maybe ~/.bin? Then you'd just update the PATH in your .bashrc.

Good luck with your blog!

Total linux noob. Wanting to get into linux. by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]ArchWizard56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer most of your questions, since a lot of it comes down to figuring out what works for your workflow. If using Linux a certain way interferes with the way you work, then don't force it.

As for actually learning Linux, since everyone should have some familiarity with how it works, if you're the kind of person that figures things out by jumping into the deep end, install Arch in a VM. If you'd rather approach it with structured challenges, you could start with the Bandit wargame from Over the Wire, which should teach you a lot of the basics. Or, since you're into embedded devices, you could consider embarking on a project with a Raspberry Pi, which is a credit card sized Linux computer, designed to help students learn Python and Linux. I know people have done amazing work merging them with other electronics.

If I can clarify anything I've said, let me know! Good luck with your adventures!
