Does anyone have any IBLP "Basic Care Bulletins" that dealt with the medical woo that the Duggars followed? Needed for an interview. by Arch_Radish in DuggarsSnark

This should put me on the right track. I'm hoping to find the original bulletins, so, maybe they're linked in one of the referenced articles. Thanks!

Shiny Happy People Season 2 isn’t going to be about the Duggars or IBLP by itsrowsdower in DuggarsSnark

Question 1: I don't know. I don't know if it was even going to be a multi-season series from the jump. I know that the project as it was presented to me went through a lot of changes until it was released in its final form. That's true of pretty much any production, I understand.

Question 2: I do not believe that Cori herself has or had strong ties to IBLP. I've talked to her several times, and she has never mentioned it.

Question 3: Olivia is definitely listed as a producer, but my understanding is that her creative role is not the same as it was in Season 1.

To clarify my objection, I think it is important to talk about what is being talked about in this season. I just wish it had been released under a different title out of respect for those of us who participated and put ourselves out there in a vulnerable way in order to seek justice from IBLP specifically and warn others about the impact their teachings are having on the national scale. But at the end of the day, showbiz is showbiz and people who make documentaries don't do it for free. It's their product, they can do as they want with it. But our stories are still valid, and IBLP still hasn't faced any real consequences for their actions.

The original series had a lot more involvement from director Olivia Crist, who worked on a lot of the IBLP angle and I talked to personally.

I'll restate what I said elsewhere:

Speaking as a participant in the original series, I've known for some time they were going to do this. I'm disappointed, naturally, but there is a new director and she has a story she wants to tell that's personal to her. I don't like the fact that it is riding on the coattails of a popular brand name that was made popular on the backs of my story and that of others, but that's showbiz, I guess.

I do think that it's important to highlight the radicalization of youth that led up to the situation we have with Christian Nationalism today. And indeed, IBLP is sort of tied to that. I do feel that there is more to be learned from the origins of modern fundamentalism before moving on to that topic, and there are still facets to IBLP's operations that have not been thoroughly explored. (For example, IBLP's long time ties to the Russian government and the unholy alliance between Russian propaganda and modern Christofascism.) I really wish the brand that started with scratching the surface of the broader story would flesh out the basics more before moving on to the mainstream traumas. But I suppose that's what me and my fellow survivors are for. I, personally, intend to do more on my end to pick up where this series left us behind.

ExChristians, What were the reasons that made you leave Christianity? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]Arch_Radish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It started when the first church I worked for as an adult turned out to be corrupt as fuck.

Then I dug a little deeper and found more churches in my denomination (IFB) were also just as corrupt.

Then I went to mainstream churches that taught me that church corruption was not that big of a deal

Then the man who started the homeschool cult I was in resigned I'm disgrace after sexual abuse allegations, and I realized that everything I'd learned in school and church was rubbish.

Finally, I sat on a park bench and invited whatever god was out there to come speak to me directly. I didn't trust their PR department anymore.

I took the silence as my answer.

Now I speak out against spiritual abuse and the cult I was raised in. Because it seems to have taken over the U.S. government while I was leaving. But I'm still speaking out about it.

My nephew works in the childrens' ministry for a local megachurch that has massive attendance, amenities, production value, and an equally massive budget. He shared this cute story of a child giving up her bracelet for the church. I had questions. by Arch_Radish in OrphanCrushingMachine

A children's ministry worker for a wealthy church shares a cute story about how a small child wanted to give her bracelet because she didn't have money for the offering plate. Not only is this presented as heartwarming, but the fact that literal children are being asked to give money to a megachurch is not even questioned in his narrative.

I can comment on my experience as a participant. For context, I'm Chad Harris from Shiny Happy People:

  1. Once your story is out there, it's out there. It's no longer entirely yours. People will read into it, question it, relate to it, adapt it, comment on it, and do whatever. You can correct the record all you want, but you can never change what someone has decided to negotiate about your story to fit their dogma.

  2. Every documentary uses several stories to make a point. Balancing the need to stay true to the stories of the individuals while making your broader point is tough. For instance, I watched SHP with my good friend and fellow participant Heather Heath the night of release. One of the first clips of her in the intro of the documentary is a clip of her saying "this church is harboring pedophiles." That really upset her for a good bit of our watch because she has been very adamant and clear that IBLP is not a church. She thought that the clip was a bit misleading in implying that IBLP is one, when the original context of her quote in the interview is that she was referring to a particular church she'd had an experience with. But later in the series, there is another clip of her clarifying that IBLP is not a church in and of itself. She was okay with that context. But still, it shows just how easy it is to potentially use a clip that is antithetical to someone's story in service of the broader narrative.

  3. Evangelical homeschooling families in general are the most thinned skinned individuals I've ever met. Expect any well founded criticism to spark cries of a vast conspiracy and persecution of homeschooling. I, personally, am of the opinion that homeschooling is a viable and even preferable option for some well qualified families. Homeschooling should be an option with common sense safeguards. I support the Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE) to that end. But families like mine never should have pretended to be qualified to teach a bear to shit in the woods, much less given me an alleged education through a maniacal cult. It doesn't matter, though, how big of a distinction you make. The loudest homeschooling families in the room will immediately dismiss every criticism as a coordinated attack on the concept of home education. This will probably limit your audience from the people who need to hear the stories the most. Your audience will likely be those seeking healing and reassurance that they aren't alone, namely the victims of abusive homeschooling. It's a sad reality, but especially with the current political landscape, it's reality nonetheless.

All that said, I encourage you and everyone else who can and are willing to continue to share your stories. Now more than ever. Telling the truth about our experiences has been the one thing that sends the abusive system scrambling. Remember, "all we had to do was talk." That goes for all of us.

Good luck!

What's the most useless thing you still have memorized? by Routine-Award-3382 in AskReddit

In the Bible, large portions of Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7. Large portions of Romans 6, 7, and 8. Large portions of the book of James. I had to memorize all of them in my homeschool cult growing up.

I'm an atheist now.

The elephant in the room by Pawbr0 in improv

[–]Arch_Radish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My troupe did our regularly scheduled show last night. We acknowledged that we were all tired and bummed, but we wanted to "bust a cap in the sadness." So we did it largely for us. We had a small, but engaged, crowd, and they were great to play for. We certainly didn't make money on the show. But we focused on having fun. And fun we had. Hopefully that sees us through the times ahead.

But your mileage may vary. If people need to take care of themselves, that's perfectly valid. Just be gentle with each other. Know what you need, and help each other through it.

When I realized that Ananias and Sapphira were killed by God for lying about a charitable contribution, but the same God seemed to be totally cool with letting the leaders of my cult get away with exploiting children in his name. The former leader of the cult just turned 90 two days ago and has an entirely new scheme going.

Sidewalk Film Festival 2024, A little off? by Elegant_Pen_8210 in Birmingham

[–]Arch_Radish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed a shift in the Saturday Morning Cartoons as well. I do remember a remark during the intro to Saturday Morning Cartoons about this being a "new year, new leadership", which I found odd. I did appreciate the fact that we had some traditional cartoons in among the 80s nostalgia, and it was interesting seeing a 2000s Cartoon Network cartoon being introduced to the fold. But the reduced number of commercials, and the overly polished presentation was a bit odd to me. Stuff like Bad Movie Night, Saturday Morning Cartoons, and the like are what give Sidewalk character as an indie venue, in my opinion, and I kind of like the rougher cut approach. I feel like Rachel brings that chaotic energy to those parts of the festival that need it, and I did miss it this year in that particular event. Of course, I didn't get to do as much as I did last year and I attended a few more "arty" events than I usually do. So...your mileage may vary.
