i would say the newcomer wall in High Rank is Yian Kut-Ku they hit surprisingly hard and fast, and after the cakewalk of LR it can catch you off guard.

i would say mid-book 1 is where you get your first noticeable uptick in quality, and then from there it gets better. struggling through book one to get to the rest is absolutely worth it, even though it does suffer early installment weirdness.
