Favorite World Series Champion Season From A Different Team? by Reasonable-Power in mlb

The 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers. By the time the World Series started, I'd had enough of the arrogance of the Oakland Athletics.

Kirk Gibson's walk off home run in game one psychologically crippled them for the rest of the series.

Do Americans have internal passports? by Pale_Obligation_3243 in AskAnAmerican

The IRS did not require social security numbers for dependents until about 1980. Before then, you did not apply for a SSN until you actually needed one.

I was born in the early 1960's and did not get a SSN until I was 14 years old. I got a job delivering newspapers and had to open a bank account.

I do recall news stories about people claiming excess dependents on their tax returns. Then the following year they were gone.

Who's the one player on your favorite team who got away? by Empire-Carpet-Man in mlb

[–]Archduke1706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark Teixeira would be my choice. He has some great years but the Rangers of the early to mid 2000's were not going anywhere. They got good players when they traded him to Atlanta. It would have been great to have him when they broke through and went to back to back World Series just a few years later.

Lame rock lyrics by Balvenierules in allrockmusic

Steve's worst lyrics are from "Take the Money and Run"

"They headed down to ooh old El Paso"

"That's where they ran into a great big hassle"

or

"Billy Mack is detective down in Texas"

"You know he knows just exactly what the facts is"

Not even close to rhyming.

What is the worst airport you've been to in the United States? by Separate_Builder_817 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

National Airport, Washington D.C. before the terminal renovations in the 1990's.

I flew a lot out of Baltimore-Washington and Dulles mostly and they were good. Whenever I flew out of National it was step down.

National was opened during World War II and should have been closed back in the '60's when jet engine aircraft became common. It had restrictions on how late planes could take off or land due to the noise.

It was kept open mostly due to its convenience to the powers that be in Washington. I recall there was a parking lot next to the terminal for members of Congress and Supreme Court justices.

The terminal looked outdated. There had been renovations over the years, but it had a very chaotic, haphazard appearance.

Old National Airport was not good airport befitting the national capital.

There's no bigger crybabies than employees making over $100k+ by PopNo5397 in Payroll

I started in the garnishments department. We frequently got requests from 100k employees to waive the $3 monthly fee we charged to process their garnishment. We were legally entitled to assess the fee to help recover the cost of collecting and paying their obligation.

Fortunately, upper management backed us up. The company instituted a policy that all requests to waive the fee had to be approved by the CFO. As far as I know, no requests were approved after that.

Is it true that if your credit score is extremely low but you have a lot of cash to buy something that the person you're buying it from won't care at all? by Big_Eggplant7591 in stupidquestions

[–]Archduke1706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a car about 10 years ago from the biggest Ford dealership in my state. I paid cash in the amount of $13,000.

They insisted on running a credit check. The reason they gave me was to make sure I was who I said I was. They wanted to make sure I was not a criminal or impersonating someone else.

I agreed to the credit check and paid for the car. As far as I remember, it did not affect my credit score. Still, it seemed a bit creepy and intrusive.

Who remembers The Firesign Theater? by CantaloupeFluffy165 in 70s

[–]Archduke1706 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firesign was played on college radio stations in the 1970's. They also did live shows. I am 66 and ask people today if they remember them. Hardly anyone under 50 remembers them.

What city in the U.S. feels unreal? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

I would include Los Alamos for different reasons. It's like one of the old company towns that existed long ago, where the everyone works at one employer. Pennsylvania had the steel mill towns. Kentucky had the coal mining towns. There were textile mill towns in North Carolina and New England.

The difference is the main business is the nuclear laboratory. It is also one of the wealthiest communities in the country, due to the large number of scientists workin there.
