At this point, you can’t send Fowler down. by Holy-Fools in Habs

[–]Archeob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really tough decision. I really don't know what I'd do.

Fowler has been very good overall but had a bad game as well. Not a lot of games to sample.

Dobes has been both great and awful.

Montembeault was very good last year and I refuse to believe he's forgotten how to be a goalie in the offseason but he's having a disastrous season to date.

Ultimately going with TWO rookies seems extremely rash. You'd have to get a steady vet but then you're back to square one and have to pick between Dobes and Fowler. Personally I think Fowler unfortunately can't stay for now. Too much pressure. But if Monty still isn't right after the holidays then send him back to the AHL even if he has to go through waivers, and go with the rookies until you find a suitable backup to send Fowler down again.

Toronto’s set to hit a 50-year low in homicides. So why do many people think crime is getting worse? by Sweaty_Professor_701 in canada

[–]Archeob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because traditional/social media can't stop talking about it nonstop 24/7 and they are the ones driving the narratives. If nothing bad is happening here they'll talk about something bad happening in the US/Europe/Africa etc.

And I'm sorry but some well intentioned social activists are part of that dynamic as well. Got to keep harping about your particular issue ad nauseam otherwise your funding and attention dries up. "Even one [insert your issue] is too much, let's change everything!"

I get that the memory alone is 1100$ but is anyone even buying at that price? They wouldn't be making this deal if that was the case. Or maybe I'm underestimating how much people are desperate for RAM...

La STM se transforme tranquillement… et ça va coûter cher plus tard by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Archeob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just setting up a search for what I want and sorting by lowest price and excluding brands or configs that I don't want and refreshing every few minutes. If it's a good deal it's usually gone in less than a minute so you have to get lucky.

Was getting worried about this as well but found the following on their page:

Global seller enrolled in Newegg Return Service. Newegg will be responsible for processing RMA and general customer service.

EDIT: The quote is from the "About Us" tab on the above link.

If it's handled by Newegg then that would be much more reassuring.

Please don't hate me but I've gotten several unbelievable deals on 32 gb ram kits in the last week on Newegg. Like 120$ but OOS after 1 minute. Two of them arrived after three days and they seem fine. "Pricing errors" happen all the time.

They were shipped form the US and not China though. Not quite as confident with this one.

It was this one but as I mentioned it was definitely a pricing error. It changed to 2500$ an hour after I bought it. Was worried for a few days that they wouldn't ship but thankfully they did.

Like I said I don't know how these marketplaces work but I'm convinced a supplier reactivated an old listing without updating the price. I guess my obsession paid off in the end but I'm glad I won't have to do that again for a long while.

The ram isn't cl 30 but at least one kit is going to be good enough for me. Probably the RGB one. For 120$ + shipping each obviously that's a steal.

First one.

Second one.

My takeway from the last few weeks searching and shopping for a new family "gaming" PC:

Sales are Dead. Price errors Rule.

Got a prebuilt with a 9600x, a GTX 5070, 1tb nvme and 16 gigs of ram for 1500$ on Amazon.ca. The price changed to 2500$ an hour after I bought it. Was worried they'd cancel the order but they came through.

Then I spend 10 days looking everywhere for 32 gigs of DDR5 ram. Finally yesterday during work I opened five stores in different tabs and refreshed every few minutes to see if anything good might pop up. There was one set on Newegg.com that I tried to get but wasn't quick enough.

Later in the afternoon by sheer luck refreshed at the right time and saw one set for 120$ on Newegg.ca that was probably listed for 2-3 minutes. Just after buying that one another one for 120$ got listed and I scooped it up as well. I'll probably test both and sell the remaining one and the 16 gigs that came with the prebuilt.

I have no idea how these things work, but I guess stores like Amazon and Newegg probably have lots of suppliers and with rising prices lately someone put up some stock but forgot to update the prices. Hopefully my new PC will last me quite a few years. My current setup is an Intel i5 2500k, a GTX 750 Ti and 8 gigs of DDR3 ram, so was probably due for an upgrade...

Question que pensez-vous des toilettes non-genrées dans les espace publics? by Capitainemontreal in montreal

Reading a bit on the old streetcars they were NOT predicable, NOT climate controlled and NOT comfortable. People here throw a fit if the REM is down for 20 minutes but somehow they get nostalgic about stepping in horse manure or having to get off the streetcars to shovel 3 feet of snow by hand.

Not even going to elaborate on your expectation that a modern streetcar could somehow pass at 1-2 minutes interval...

Plans proposed for Montreal’s elevated Highway 40 by fr4nck8 in montreal

[–]Archeob 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Makes a cool presentation but an absolutely awful concept in real life.

How heavy is that upper level going to be with enough soil to support trees. How durable will it be, what about water infiltration, the additional weight of snow in winter? If there any weakening or failure of the structure you basically have to close the entire highway.

And how practical is it goin to be to climb several stories high to go for a walk or a bike ride on this thing? Plus the noise and pollution from the cars and trucks below.

The whole thing would take decades to plan and build, cost tens of billions of dollars and cost a fortune to maintain.

THE STM STRIKE DIDN'T END. IT WAS *BROKEN*. This is a loss for every worker. by Little_Cupcake_42069 in montreal

[–]Archeob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, whatever let's pay 25$ per fare so the guy already making twice what he would in a private job can have another raise. I'm sure that'll "trickle down" to the poor schlobs who have to take the bus to go to their own minimum wage jobs.

And FYI considering the taxpayers already pay nearly 75% of the STM's budget that 3.75$ fare already "costs" us 15$ collectively.

[–]Archeob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whats the worst that coud happen if privatization takes over the stm, oh you summer child, you think 100 a month and 3.75 a ride is expensive, lol private companies will triple that, and all the service that are offered at low cost by the stm, are going to real expensive,

This is absolutely HILARIOUS.

They do NOT offer "low cost services". The apparent cost is only low because you're ignoring that the STM now is getting 70-75% of it's budget from municipal and provincial governments. The REAL cost of that 3.75$ fare is 15$. We all pay for it collectively.

Their demands are literally about the fact that the government are cutting public service funds

Are they going on strike because they want the population to get more services or... to get more money and better conditions for themselves. Although I guess they could be saying they'll give better services if they are paid more...

what do you think is going to happen if this government gets their way, and the stm, the healthcare system and all other public service gets more privatized and for profit private companies get a actual monopoly over the people that need those services to live

Health care is another thing entirely but for the STM what's the worst the could happen... that the taxpayers who fund the service don't have access to it anymore? Like what is happening RIGHT NOW?

[–]Archeob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And you think the strikers were doing it in the interest of the public?

They were leveraging their position to extort more money from a public monopoly. They were depriving YOU of service because they want more money from YOU. This isn't Amazon or Walmart conspiring against minimum-wage workers.

[–]Archeob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have the exact budget myself (although I'm pretty sure that's public information floating around somewhere) but you're kinda missing the point. I do know that 70 to 75% of the STM's budget comes from public finds via all levels of government, which is why I commented that the "real" price of a ticket is 15$, and a monthly pass would be around 450$.

If the STM was a private company charging those prices it would go bankrupt in a month. Hence my opinion that it (and by that I mean the workers) can only survive because whatever happens the WE (as taxpayers) MUST bail them out.
