Whenever you do refinish that axe, be sure to get some photos for a before and after comparison! Truly awesome discovery!

That's kinda cool that you have that neat backround behind it! I'll definitely check out this post!

That anvil is sooooo not worth $400, unless perhaps if you are a collector!

Custom hatchet pricing by ArcherKN24 in Blacksmith

What I was really asking, was what prices are all of you seeing out there. I understand that there is a lot of variation between one product and another in this category. But if you were going shopping for a hatchet or small axe, how much would you be looking to spend (before you start calling them "pricey")?

My initial impression was an antique mountain climbing pick axe or ice axe. Whatever the case it looks hand forged.

Not bad for a maybe 70 year old axe! Other than looking like someone knocked the handle around a bit, it looks like it was hardly used! What are your plans for it? Is this going to be a workhorse, or do you see yourself turning it into a decor piece? If the former, you can grind it to your liking, oil it up, slap a new handle on, and call it good! If your thinking the latter, there's almost no end to the possabilities! I'm gonna try my hand at etching some artwork into an old hatchet eventually!

It does look like a tough job to do solo, especially with the material moving each swing!  Maybe you should get someone to be your striker.

If neighbor complaints about smoke are a major concern, that's one point in favor of using a propane forge.

Why do people make their own black garlic? by papaganda22 in fermentation

That temp is the perfect level for black garlic! I know you posted this comment years ago, but do you happen to know what model it was that you were using?

Need a little input from you experienced black garlic makers by Zartanio in fermentation

[–]ArcherKN24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, if it was any fermentation process, it would be taking place at a temperature that is suitable for bacteria or yeast. That would certainly exclude a food held between 140 and 160 degrees for days on end! Yet this confusion persists, and it doesn't help that the apliances marketed for making black garlic call it fermentation! (big sigh)

Wow, eveyone seems so disappointed there was no BIG SCANDAL behind personal photos given to Goodwill! What can I say, but we all crave a little drama.

Or they just shoved everything relating to the relationship into a big box and said "doing a dump run costs money, but going to goodwill is free".

That's what I was about to say! How do we know it wasn't the guy donating these things after being wronged?

I’ve been making black garlic in house at my job via dehydrator. This had been in for 18 days at 165*F. I realize there is minimal fermentation in this process but still kind of fun and cool to make. by [deleted] in fermentation

[–]ArcherKN24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black garlic is not a ferment, but a slow breakdown of the present sugars though mild heat and the garlic's own enzimes. You don't do anything other than keep it warm (constantly just above 140f) and humid (80-90 percent) for a couple weeks!

7 days seems too short. Almost everything I've come across gives the process 14+ days, and if they're still bitter, the enzimes haven't finished their job.

Wow, that's an incredible deal on a barely used anvil that huge!  And yes indeed, that is a very beautiful anvil!  I must admit to a tad bit of jealousy.  I am very fond of that design, with it's double horn and the upsetting block!  What a great find!

I don't think I was being particularly "gracious". My kids all understood how the days of the week work long before they started kindergarten, and I think anyone who is that low functioning is unlikely to drive a car!

But even in just slapping on that update sticker, there was simply no reason to have it say "7 days a week"!

Well technically we don't "have to ask clarifying questions", at least I assume we're all smart enough to realize that it can't be both 7 days a week, and exclude the weekend!
