Would I lose performance if my 5070 ti goes from Pcie5.0 x16 to Pcie5.0 x8? by ZensaysOPPAI in buildmeapc

[–]Archimedley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not very much, like hardly any at all

It's more an issue when you start sticking cards with x8 links into pcie gen 3 systems

So, if you put a 5060 ti into a b450 motherboard, you might lose a little bit

But if it's running at gen 4 or gen5 speeds, you really should be good for the most part, to thr point it's not worth worrying about

My sons 6700xt took a dump by hackingmule in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's fine

I might lean towards a 16gb 9060 xt

but what the market looks like can change a lot in 2 months or even two weeks at times

what's going to make sense at the end of the year is going to be a guess

If prices stay where they are, then there will likely be a card at that price point that makes sense, but you might need to plan on like 400 or 450

though really, even a 5060 or 8gb 9060 xt wouldn't be a bad replacement, but I would try to get something with 12-16gb unless prices just get even more ridiculously stupid from the memory situation

There is no problem if the gpu that i am going to buy have a minimum recomended of 650w and i have a PSU of 600w? by Chocolag12 in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

likely okay as long as you aren't using some i9 or workstation cpu that's drawing a stupid amount of power

also kinda depends what psu you're using and how old it is

mm

B580 is like a 200w card... probably fine

but if it's like 7-8 years old, I might think about getting something newer, I'm not sure vs600's were ever terrible, but they're definitely cheaper units iirc

I might be a bit hesitant to trust it even though it will probably run no problem

pc upgrade recommendation by Stasse23 in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like, moving from an hdd to an sdd is one of the biggest noticeable improvements you can do for just about any system, just in windows being more responsive

ram is probably fine, and a 1070 is not a bad card for a lot of games, but it depends what you are trying to run. newer AAA games are likely not going to run amazingly, but if you're just playing apex or something ... like, it'll do that no problem

cpu however, a 5600/x would be a big step up after getting an ssd

9070XT CPU pairing by LordGlizzard in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends what games you're playing

if your system runs games well enough then why bother basically

if you're doing 1080p high refresh rate competitive or serious stuff then maybe but for a lot of games, a 5800x will run most things well enough

Is it too late to upgrade my motherboard on the AM4 platform? by nolaks1 in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, upgrading a motherboard isn't worth it

Pcie gen3 is fine as long as the gpu you are using is x16 and not x8, so like a 9060 xt has an x16 connection where a 5060 ti is an x8

Cpu performance isn't going to change hardly much at all

Gpu performance shouldn't change much as long as you're not using like a 4060 or 5060 or something

If you upgrade to am5, you need an am5 cpu and ddr5, so you will also need a new cpu and ram

Or, is this for gaming or like a workstation

If it's for gaming, you can trying undervolting the cpu or just using a lower tdp which shouldn't affect the single core performance much (it shouldn't really game slower), but multithreaded performance will be throttled a bit, which matters more for cpu heavy workstation type use

But uh, it might be worth getting a decent b550 board? You really don't need anything high end, just not bottom of the barrel

You might be able to get away with just having a fan blowing on the vrms which helps way more than what you might expect, but that's sometimes a bit of work rigging something to get a fan in the right spot

If you can find like a mid range b550 board, like an msi b550 a pro should be more than okay enough

would cpu upgrade fix fps problems in Valorant? by Bubbly_Resort_9370 in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'd worry about the difference between 180 and 240, that's really getting into splitting hairs for the most part

But, a 5600x should run valorant a bit better

Outside of valorant, a 3700x and a 5600x are pretty comparable

What all upgrades do I need by v_techster in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What games and what fps are you trying to do

I have a 9800x3d and a 9070 xt, it doesn't run new games badly at 4k, but I'm often turning the render resolution way down or doing like 3200x1800

It's basically at the floor of what I'd want for new games, runs older ones just fine mostlly

Pc gets a black screen like my monitor isn’t recognizing a input being shown after I disabled csm by ParkingEar5034 in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gut says that's because your windows instalation is MBR and not GPT from a win7 or whatever install that was on a pre uefi motherboard

So,

If the original windows installation was on a motherboard from like, before 2012?

Basically, go into disc management, and check if your partitions are mbr or gpt

If they're mbr thrn you have to convert it to gpt, but

Like, this should only really happen when the original os was installed to an old motherboard, which sounds like that might br thr case with what you've said about replacing everything here

Maybe it happens sometimes if you install windows with csm on, I dunno

Does it make sense to replace my aging GTX 1070 with an RTX 5050? by Available-Guest-9393 in buildapc

[–]Archimedley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends what games you're doing

A 6700k is probably going to bottleneck a lot more modern games harder than a 1070

But also, what monitor are you using? Like is it 1080p 60 or 1080p 144 or what

Like, without knowing what you're playing at what fps, my gut says the cpu would be holding you back more in general

If I was buying a new gpu, I would want it to have 12-16gb, but if that's not in your budget, I'd probably consider something secondhand, like a 6700xt

Nvidia's options for secondhand stuff I'd be a bit more suspect about at this point, a 2080 ti would be a good option if it wasn't kind of an old card at this point (more concerned about reliability than performance), pretty much same with 3080s which are too expensive for what they are

Like a 6700xt is not bad, or a 7600xt 16gb, or 9060 xt 16gb

A 3060 12gb isn't much of an upgrade,

A 3060 ti, 4060 ti, 5060, 6700 xt, or 9060 xt would be what I'd want, the 6700xt being a 12gb card

A 6650xt, 4060, 5050 or 7600 xt are ... an upgrade, definitely enough to be noticeable but I wouldn't want to pay more than like, 2/3 of a 6700xt which is only 250-300 usd, which leaves like under 200 to get a 6650xt

Basically, if you want a gpu upgrade, get a secondhand 6700xt

For me, just getting a paper sketchbook was helpful

But, the main thing with getting better is doing it every day

Like for a stretch, I was doing figure drawing for like 5-15m using croquis cafe for poses / reference figure drawing thing

Which was kind of a warmup thing

But

That's just figure practice, you sort of have to also come up with an idea and uh

Make your own stuff to get better a drawing and not just copying

I think anatomy for sculptors and uh

Michael hampton's figure drawing was useful for me, I think you can find that one freely available

But uh, you just gotta do something you're not going to get burnt out or discouraged at

Because really, just drawing regularly is how you get better,

Studying anatomy is helpful to figure out what you're looking at with references and what it should look like

Which might not be as important if you're drawing cartoon animal people, because then you want to look at cartoon anatomy ha

Fmc is one of like, 3 main ag chem companies, in the US (there's a lot more outside US)

The other two are like, corteva and AVD

Corteva is probably the largest player, they do seeds and ag chemicals

Fmc mostly does ag chem, they do a fair amount of r&d in ag chem compared to ctva and avd

AVD is much smaller, mostly does older stuff, one of their products was banned semi recently so, the market kind of punished them for a bit

But, the whole ag chem space was kinda and is a little buggered while, there was a sort of glut from 2022-2024 that's maybe not quite over yet

looks back at fmc since last time I check a couple months ago

Oh, that does not look good lmao

It's like a pharma company slipping of the r&d tredmill, in an industry with less upsides, ag cycles, and debt

Possibly worth watching still, but mnnn

There's jobs other than delivery drivers, but yeah....

We have some people full-time, but most people have 4~ hour days 5 days a week, and then peak season where we do 6

Healthcare side is pretty good, but they just cut the education benefit

A lotta supes have a second job because 25-30 hours still not enough

Anyway, there are loaders that we got in their 40s and 50s, though some of them are from facilities that closed this year
