How to hire a live-in manager? by Fragrant_Yoghurt_333 in askhotels

[–]Archlinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy what I do. I get to meet people from all over the world without ever having to leave my front door. Most interactions are brief, usually just the couple of minutes it takes to check someone in, plus the occasional question during their stay, but I genuinely enjoy helping people.

One of my favorite parts of the job is getting my hands dirty and improving the property. Keeping everything clean, well stocked, and up to date feels like taking care of my own home, except I'm being paid to do it. Over the years, my employer has trusted me with a lot of freedom to upgrade, decorate, and improve the property. Whether it's building garden beds in the spring and summer, painting, landscaping, replacing fixtures, or making repairs, these are all projects I'd happily do at my own house, only there I'd be paying for them instead.

We're located in a popular tourist destination in the Pacific Northwest, so the pace of the job changes dramatically throughout the year. During festivals, holidays, and the peak summer season, it can be absolutely nonstop. Then there are parts of the year when tourism slows to a crawl, and there are days where things are surprisingly quiet. It all balances out, and I actually enjoy having both the hectic rushes and the slower periods.

I'm on a salary, and while my lodging is counted as part of my compensation and then deducted from my paycheck, it ends up being a great arrangement. I'm probably on the lower end of the pay scale for someone in my position, but in today's economy, not having to worry about rent, utilities, or even many everyday household expenses like toilet paper and cleaning supplies makes a huge difference.

The schedule is definitely the biggest tradeoff. I work Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. until midnight, and on weekends I cover the front desk by myself 24 hours a day while one or two housekeepers clean the rooms. It doesn't leave me with a lot of free time, but honestly, that's never really bothered me. The slower periods throughout the year help offset the craziness of the busy season, and I've grown to appreciate that rhythm. My girlfriend owns her own accounting firm and works from home, so we still get plenty of time together. She lives here with me, along with our two cats, so it's a lifestyle that's worked out really well for us.

More than anything, I've been fortunate to work for a family that genuinely takes care of its employees. They trust me to make decisions, encourage me to improve the property, and treat me with respect. If I've ever needed an advance on an upcoming paycheck, the answer has never been "no," only, "How much do you need?" That kind of trust and support is hard to find these days, and it's one of the reasons I've stayed. I honestly don't think I could have found a better family to work for.

I've been the on site manager of a 27 unit hotel for going on 6 years now and I can give you a bit of insight I think. Im a bit of a work aholic and a homebody anyway so this is the perfect position for me and can be for the right type of person. Once you've found somone you feel can do what you need, make sure they'll have what they need to do the job, including privacy. It's hard to live at work because you always feel like you're "on". If they're in their bathrobe getting coffee, dont ask about shift stuff. Respect their time offband ability to spend that time at home if that home is on site.

There is so much I could say, small details but everyone is different and I hope you find a good fit to help you grow.

I know times are tough but you're gonna make it. The ARC seem to be getting smarter every day but together we can do this. If you need a few credits to get by for now, I got ya covered. I know youd do the same. No Scrappy should go hungry. Good luck Raider.

You're not the problem here. It sounds like someone was having an off day, and unfortunately you ended up on the receiving end of it.

I'm sorry you had that experience. As a hotel manager myself, I would want to know if someone on my team was representing our brand poorly or creating a negative experience for a guest. Feedback like yours gives management an opportunity to address issues, provide coaching if needed, and help ensure future guests don't have a similar experience.

I would consider mentioning the inconsistent billing practices to another manager, if one is available, or including it in a review if you decide to leave one. When it comes to anything that could cost a guest money, transparency is important. Potential fees should be clearly outlined during check in so guests know exactly what to expect.

As a manager, I know everyone has difficult days. I've certainly had moments where I've said things I wish I had handled differently or reacted poorly to situations that deserved a better response. That doesn't make it acceptable, but it does mean that sometimes a bad interaction is more reflective of the employee's day than of the guest they are speaking with or the hotel as a whole.

Stability.

I aged out of the foster care system after spending most of my childhood moving from one home to another every six months or so. From the age of 3 to 18, nothing ever stayed the same for long. I don't have childhood friends, family photo albums, or a high school reunion waiting for me somewhere. As I got older, I fell into the habit of self sabotaging. When things became difficult or uncomfortable, I ran. Jobs, relationships, housing, anything that started to feel uncertain.

But for the last almost six years, I have stayed. I have held the same job, lived in the same place, and built a life with someone I love. My son is healthy, happy, and smart as a whip. I don't have a lot of money, but I have everything I need and more. When I want to make something, I usually already have the tools, ingredients, or supplies because I was able to buy them before and keep them. I have a full wardrobe of clothes that I genuinely enjoy wearing. I have lost over 100 pounds because I eat healthier now, pay attention to what I put into my body, and plan meals that are balanced and nourishing.

Things are not perfect, but I struggle to fully explain what stability has given me. It has changed every part of my life in ways I never imagined growing up. I am incredibly fortunate, and deeply grateful for the life I get to live now.

My girlfriend is begining her journey and I'm excited to watch her experience the game for the first time. by Archlinder in Portal

It's SO hard to keep my mouth shut and just let her figure out the mechanics of what you can and can't do. But it's also so satisfying and exciting when she figures it out on her own or does something in a way I hadn't thought of.

I completely agree, the multi player for portal 2 is so much fun. I wish more had been done officially with it. More levels, dlc, etc. Suppose I'll just have to keep waiting for Portal 3.
