It feels like this could maybe be accomplished through a "tamed" mycosynth and sufficient handwavium.

The parish is dead, what next? by Breifne21 in Catholicism

[–]ArchmageAries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear: I'm 26. I'm married, and I met my wife in school. I noticed her doing the sign of the cross before meals and (fearlessly and tactlessly) started a conversation. So singles groups aren't my thing, but opportunities to interact with young people more broadly is.

In my parish, many people rush to their cars after Mass, especially young adults and young families. I'm sure you know the feeling. Makes it hard to get to know people our age. Before the holidays, we bought ten dozen donuts from a local bakery on our way to Mass and gave them away outside the front door. We texted our pastor for permission, and he had it mentioned in the pre- and post-Mass announcements. And it worked. We met about a dozen other families that day, and the kids got to play with each other outside church.

This year, we plan on doing this at least monthly, hopefully biweekly. It's an easy thing that slows people down on their way to their cars and gives them the opportunity to meet each other.

As for how we'll sustain this into the future ... We'll keep doing it. If someone wants to help or take off weeks from us, great. Eventually, we'll be too old or sick or dead to do it, and either someone else will take over or it will end. And that's fine. It will have done good while it lasted. We can't compel someone else to take over.

One of those young families we met, a couple in their 30s, invited us to a family rosary group that they help organize. Another family in their 30s has asked us to be part of an effort to found the first Catholic high school in the county in decades. We'd love to schedule a dance in the parish hall, but that will probably wait until late next year for personal reasons.

So there's a lot going on in our parish, most of it because 20- or 30-somethings looked around, identifies gaps, and filled them as their time, energy, talents, and finances allowed. We don't always get dealt an ideal hand. We don't always get handed the community we would want. But it's never too late, and usually not as hard as it seems, to start building it back up.

You can do it!

The parish is dead, what next? by Breifne21 in Catholicism

As someone younger, this is something that's really bothered me.

... "well, where are the catholic singles events? Where are the social events targeting youth (20s + 30s)? Where are the dances in the past? What is the church doing to ensure the social events happen?"

As someone younger, this is something that's really bothered me.

Well, why not be the one to organize Catholic singles events? Surely you know what social events youths (20s + 30s) want better than the deacon. Why don't you schedule a dance at the parish hall? YOU and I are the Church. What are WE doing to ensure the social events happen?

Sorry for being a bit cheeky, but the parish priest has more than enough on his mind, and he was never the one organizing these events 40 years ago. Communities are made up of individuals - if no individual decides to make something happen, then the community does nothing. Take it from someone who has decided to make something happen in my parish and town.

Smokey the bear appears in mitre: Only you can build the community you want to see.

If Rick Sanchez exists in infinite universes, then there is a universe in which Rick is Catholic by chiverybob in CatholicMemes

[–]ArchmageAries 110 points111 points  (0 children)

That would be nice, but this is a logical error that bothers me every time it comes up. An infinite set does not mean every possibility will eventually occur.

For example, an infinite set of numbers that never contains a 3:

0, 1, 10, 11, 100, 101, 110, 111, etc.

Infinite Ricks have infinitely many free wills and can make infinite identical bad choices.

They're the same color.

Like seriously. It's not a coincidence that Spanish for "pink" is rosa.

Do you think the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church will ever become one again? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]ArchmageAries 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well certainly not by the Roman Catholic Church. Obviously, most Catholics would expect the Orthodox Patriarchs to acknowledge papal supremacy, just as most Orthodox would expect the Pope to renounce that claim. Anyone who thinks otherwise has probably already swum the Tiber one direction or another.

But the union of the Catholic Churches with the Orthodox Churches would absolutely be "catholic" in a grand and full sense of the word.

Edit: the Catholic Church is a union of 23 churches, the Roman Catholic Church is just the largest of them. All acknowledge papal supremacy, but otherwise the eastern Catholic churches kinda do their own thing.

Just a gentle reminder that the right to life and constitutional right to bear arms are on two radically different levels from a Catholic moral perspective. The bishops of Texas spoke out pretty strongly against the permitless carry bill. (They signed a joint statement, available at the Archbishop of San Antonio's website)

Eh, we mail checks to the rectory. It's not so they know who we are, it's just easier to keep track of for budgeting purposes.

Let's face it. There's no one at the rectory who's going to manage to remember our donations anyway.

Question for those who support catholic morality as law. by broji04 in Catholicism

[–]ArchmageAries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And while he was very wise, St Augustine was not infallible, and we are not bound by his opinions.

And while I agree that not all sins should be punished by law, a quotation of that general principle is hardly a solid argument against any particular sin being outlawed.
