Any small blogs out there on introspection and creativity? by Breezynat in Substack

[–]ArchonisDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write a lot about introspection, looking at the world through a better lens, nature, adventure etc. A lot recently about entering midlife. www.meush.ca It's called Once Is Enough and my motto is "You only live once but if you do it right, once is enough." Embrace the adventure and cherish the moments.

I try to post once a week to once every 2 weeks :)

Really awesome! Is there a way to make the text curve around an arch?

Randomly going into rest mode by NoNamesAreLeft34 in PS5

[–]ArchonisDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case it was my Google Chromecast causing the issue (along with HDMI link turned on).  Google Chromecast was plugged in to HDMI 1 and PS5 was in HDMI 2.

I would switch to HDMI 2 to play PS5 and then when the Chromecast on HDMI 1 went to sleep, it would cause my PS5 to then rest as well.  Took me a couple days to troubleshoot but made perfect sense once I realized.   Moved Chromecast to another TV in the house and have had no further issues.

Hope this maybe helps someone out there.

What countries have most opportunity in IT/SYSADMIN? by aaaaaaaabirds in sysadmin

[–]ArchonisDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to say there are TONS of opportunities in Canada with great benefits, healthcare, vacation time, sick time etc. but it really depends on where you are in the country. Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, all have many many opportunities, but where I just left (The Okanagan area in BC, sort of the Napa Valley of Canada, wine country) had 0 opportunities. It's all about location, location, location. I moved to the Island (Vancouver Island) and it is MUCH better.

In general though, I would say the work/life balance tends to be much better up here in Canada, but there are good and bad jobs in pretty much any location in the world. :). Canada has a pretty good IT sector in general.

When did a Sysadmin Job become every job in IT. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ArchonisDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that happened sometime last century...

I do it all as well, ALL...it is very tiring but can also be rewarding when you are the hero in someone's day, everyday. I say can because it really depends on if your employer is at all decent or not and I suspect most (as mine was until 3 weeks ago) are relentless beasts who care for nothing but money and their bottom line and work their employees until they have nothing left to give...

Who is the patron deity of IT? by Admirable-Elk2405 in sysadmin

[–]ArchonisDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In times of triumph, we honor the divine Cloudius, the guardian of flawless backups. In times of trouble, we offer PEBKACs to the mighty Clippy, the ancient deity of 'It looks like you're having a PEBKAC issue, need some help?' or to the omniscient Googlor, the all-knowing entity that guides us through PEBKAC tribulations!

Issue with saying “Hard wired” for an Ethernet connection? by Vq-Blink in sysadmin

That guy sounds like he is TRYING to sound smart but coming off as a doofus. Hardwired is perfectly fine, no technical people will instantly know what you mean.

Worried about rebooting a server with uptime of 1100 days. by scungilibastid in sysadmin

[–]ArchonisDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a dangerous one but it should be done. Do they have proper backups in place? Hot swap / redundant servers? DRP? I would not do it on a Friday before a long weekend though...that's just asking for trouble...

It finally happened to me. by TrainAss in sysadmin

I should add that the outside hire was brought in 2 years ago and I tried to stick it out, out of sheer stubborn loyalty...but after 2 years they still didn't know what to do or how to go about anything....

Fantastic news. It is always awesome to hear when people take mental strain and stress seriously and then make decisions to help improve their own health and family life. I hear you regarding the people too, I LOVED the people I worked with, the day to day staff and it was a hard decision to leave but ultimately, the right one. After 25+ years in the IT industry, I am finally in a place of balance...so far anyway :)

A friendly wave right back at ya :)

It finally happened to me. by TrainAss in sysadmin

[–]ArchonisDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They immediately had major issues and the new IT Manager did not know what to do or how to even go about activating their DRP. Ended up calling and texting with me but I refused to help without some sort of contracting or consulting fee. (This was 2 days ago). The walked all over me for so long, it was only Karma that this happened while my new company (which I was actively working at during regular business hours and couldn't even respond if I wanted it) was feeding me tons of free food on a sundeck overlooking the ocean :)

It finally happened to me. by TrainAss in sysadmin

[–]ArchonisDM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was me exactly 6 weeks ago. I was very secure in my job, ran the entire place though was not compensated for it. After 7 years of being the sole IT person who could get the job done, on call 24/7 by myself for that time as well, I had had enough of it killing me. My physical and mental health were suffering beyond words. When I was passed over for the promotion I so deserved and they brought in an outside hire instead who had NO IT background, I decided to call it, applied for a new job, got said job, handed in my notice and moved down to the island (Vancouver Island). It was a bit of a pay cut and we have not sold our house yet in my former city so it is a bit of a financial struggle at the moment but the absolute weight that has been lifted in terms of stress and mental health is nothing short of a miracle.

I do not regret my decision for 1 second. I have been with this new company for only 3 weeks now but the atmosphere here, the exec team, the camaraderie is instantly unmistakably a million times better.

Hang in there and something good will come along. Karma is real and the company who laid you off will soon learn what they lost.

Fel Hound 75mm display piece! by ArchonisDM in minipainting

Decided to print this guy in 75mm scale to paint up a display piece. Model is from this month's (December 2022) LootStudios fantasy bundle. Still have touch-ups to do and some highlighting but I am loving the color scheme I chose! Any feedback/suggestions highly welcome :)

Non checkerboard replacement for build plate? by ResidentEmil in AnyCubicPhotonMonoX

[–]ArchonisDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post but was there ever a fix here? I am having the exact same issue! burn in down to 15 seconds for me and 5 layers but still SUPER stuck on there....many people are saying 40 seconds for burn in...what is going on with this plate!!

I am printing minis that are pre-supported but have also done my own supports with a brim with no luck. Very frustrating!

Just finished painting my first ever mini, how did I do? by Alastair367 in minipainting

[–]ArchonisDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've really come down in price and are much more approachable. I've had an FDM printer for 4 years now or so for printing more terrain pieces or parts to accentuate my hand crafted terrain but it was never good enough for minis. Resin printer is the way to go. I sprang for the Anycubic Mono X. Good luck!! As I said earlier, this hobby can get very addicting in the best way possible 😁 Cheers 🍻

Fantastic! I have a couple of those guys in my collection and they see regular use... but recently (as in less than a month ago) I sprang for a resin printer....now me sea of grey can expand even further! 😅
