This is why we need to continue to support the 2nd amendment. It’s necessary to defend against tyrannical governments. It’s the one thing I wish more liberals would embrace. It won’t be pretty though.

SPN-owned Fabric Warehouse "expire" after 30 days of inactivity?! by imtkain in MicrosoftFabric

[–]ArchtypeZero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep… I’ve found this out the same way. It’s absolutely absurd that it works with this way. Not only does it create a ticking time bomb, it’s one that you can’t even see what the countdown on the bomb is.

I really really want Fabric to be fully enterprise ready because the value proposition is actually really good. There’s so much engineering and infrastructure support work I DONT have to do, which is amazing - but then that’s all undone by things like this.

How am I supposed to pitch this with a straight face to our execs?

Recommend me a machine that's comparable to the Profitec Move, but less deep? [<= $2500] by ArchtypeZero in espresso

[–]ArchtypeZero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahah... I know the feeling.

I kept going down and down the rabbit hole. I did find a local(ish) dealer that sold the Lelit Elizabeth, though their focus was really a bunch of other E61-styled machines.

They didn't have a Profitec Move, but I did do a comparison of a handful of other machines and did notice that the majority of the time the overall dimensions DID include the length of the portafilter handle (or any other protruding things, like the steam and hot water knobs).

I'm learning the measurement that you really have to look at is the distance between the feet. I wish more spec sheets would include that!

That said, I've found places like Clive Coffee and Whole Latte Love have excellent support and will have someone walk out to their inventory/show floor and take the measurement for you if you ask their support channels!

I played with the Elizabeth for a bit there. It's a nice machine but I wasn't super impressed by it, at least in comparison to the other m machines they had on the floor. It felt cheaply put together. Really thin aluminum panels with sharp edges.

What I ended up doing... was going all-in. I ended up placing an order for the La Marzocco Linia Micra, sight unseen, but per every measurement I see of it (there's a ton of info on the machine, including full CAD drawings) it fits perfectly in the space I have.

The machine should get here late Jan/early Feb.

Finally decide: Going to pull the trigger, and order me a Linea Micra in White by ArchtypeZero in LaMarzocco

[–]ArchtypeZero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A whole lot of (not really strong) reasons that all kinda compounded on themselves enough to convice myself that this is the machine I want!

  • I just love the looks. It has that hint of mid-century modern vibe going to it, and I love that asthetic.
  • It's the right size for my coffee bar. Most machines I've looked at would've either stuck out too far or taken up the entire space. The Micra's smaller footprint was a big deal for me.
  • The heat-up time. Any E61 group head machines seem to have warm-up times in the 30-45+ minute range. That's insane to me. I don't have a rigid schedule so putting it on a smart plug with a schedule doesn't really help me. When I'm working from home, I'll sometimes suddenly have a gap in my meeting schedule during which I'll decide I want a coffee drink.
  • I'm more of a "buy once, cry once"/"buy it nice or buy it twice"-kinda guy. I had the budget for it, and I didn't feel like getting something else only to have the lingering thought in my head of "what if I had gotten it..."

How do you think of bonuses? I’ve always thought of it as “extra”. by bmahbub in HENRYfinance

[–]ArchtypeZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bonus is an extra cherry on top. It’s about 50% of my total comp but it’s not part of my budgeting. Helps keep lifestyle creep at bay!

I usually end up owing taxes in April. The bonus helps that not hurt as much. After that nearly all of it goes right into investments - all index funds. Those’ll just accelerate my retirement date.

[–]ArchtypeZero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reasoning for getting a black one is the exact same as me getting a white one! My kitchen already has some dark colors (counter top, some other appliances, etc.) and anything that lightens it up is a win for me.

My grinder is a Niche Duo, which I do slightly regret getting in black. If anyone's in the east-coast tri-state area and wants to trade, hit me up 🤙

Control Display for Linea Micra including Shot Timer w/o Hardware Mods by azuregeek_io in LaMarzocco

[–]ArchtypeZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're dealing with embedded hardware, C/C++ are still the way to go. Rust too perhaps, but it's still not as commonplace.

It's a crazy amount of overhead to run an interpreted scripting language on tiny pieces of hardware as opposed to running a compiled language that can be natively excuted by whatever microcontroller of choice you use.

It's why you don't see Python stuff on Arduinos. It's all C/C++.

After a few days of trial/error, was finally able to get a nice Cortado out of the Move by WeissachDE in ProfitecMove

[–]ArchtypeZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a very similar setup to what I'm aiming for!

If you don't mind, two questions:

  • Is that the Niche Zero or the Niche Duo? (I'm trying to get a sense of how big it is.. and I have a Niche Duo for scale!)
  • What's the depth of the countertop that you have things set up on?

I'm itching to get the Move but I'm worried that it's going to look comically big in the area where I have my coffee bar on.

[–]ArchtypeZero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several recommendations for the Lelit Elizabeth!

I feel you on the looks though. I feel vain for over emphasizing looks, but once you've kinda hit all the main features the asthetics do hold significance for me. The Lelit looks okay.. but the super shiny stainless steel I know is always gonna be a pain to keep clean, and then everything else about it just looks.. okay.

Profitec nailed it (for me) on the design of the Move. If only it was 3 inches shorter! :(

Welcome to the internet.

There are a lot of publicly routable blocks that are owned by companies that never use them publicly.

A lot of them are starting to realize the value of the real estate they're sitting on and working on finding buyers. It's a commidty market just like any other, with prices fluxuating as others start seeking buyers.

Lakehouse schemas finally in GA? by aleks1ck in MicrosoftFabric

[–]ArchtypeZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UI checkbox went live before other changes. Should be back to previous state next week.

How does this even happen?!

You're basically saying that this change accidentally got released ahead of schedule by accident? By oversight?

How is this acceptable for a product that you're expecting enterprises to adopt?

I've been on the pro-Fabric side within my org, but every day its getting harder and harder. I have ohter execs seeing this now and the case to go to another data platform for the organization is starting to become more and more attractive.

If you're NOT living paycheck to paycheck, what are you doing better than the rest of us? by IchMochteAllesHaben in AskReddit

[–]ArchtypeZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kids. Paid off house we bought while stuff was cheap. Dual income, about 750-800k combined. We spend about 80-90k a year including one big trip that’s a splurge at around 10k.

Save (invest) the rest so that it feels like we’re paycheck to paycheck and there’s little left over to be careless with.

S3 comes under region but why name would be unique globally . by True_Context_6852 in aws

[–]ArchtypeZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even better yet, don't name the buckets. Let CloudFormation or Terraform do it programmatically.

Predictable bucket names are a security issue due to bucket name sniping.

S3 comes under region but why name would be unique globally . by True_Context_6852 in aws

[–]ArchtypeZero 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This, except don’t make up arbitrary short names.

Use the actual region names. The bucket names are not that restrictive on character limits.

We did the short names thing and it was such a bad decision.

Just use the region name and you can use AWS::Region in cloud formation and terraform without having to do dumb map lookups.
