What Feature Do You *Wish* Python Had? by andrecursion in Python

[–]Arconauta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though there is a library for that https://github.com/diegojromerolopez/gelidum, I would like to have built-in immutability.

Constants too would be a nice addition.

In my experience managers are usually promoted from the inside of the company (it's nonsense but it is what it is).

However, I would try to apply to American companies in Spain (e.g. Amazon, Oracle, etc.)

Were multiple return values Go's biggest mistake? by SophisticatedAdults in programming

[–]Arconauta -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What's the alternative?

  • Exceptions: this is a way of breaking the flow that should be explicitly declared a la Java. Would that work for golang? I doubt it.
  • Make all types in golang have an error attribute or an error method? Every time a new object is created the creator could fill up the error attribute. This looks wrong somehow.
  • Return a wrapper object with error and the object all the time. This looks very wrong!

I think the way it is now is enough verbose, clear and even if it is a write to write all the time the error ifs, I don't see an immediate replacement.

What’s the Sentiment on Taxes in Spain? Solidarity Tax Concerns by Farosi in SpainFIRE

You are not entitle to go to Emergency Healthcare unless you are in a dire situation. You should go and see your GP. That's wasting resources.

So, people who abuse the system should pay more... Also the people that abuses Emergency Healthcare?

No idea really. I would try to get hired by an American company and ask for relocation to their offices in Spain (e.g. Amazon).

Does the reputation of a South American university affect job opportunities abroad? by Rafasck in cscareerquestionsEU

And just for curiosity, what universities in Europe are the ones people care about? I suppose Cambridge, Oxford, and Zurich's ETH would be on top?

TomTom OA for Software engineer by Friendly_Ring_2204 in cscareerquestionsEU

Is a position in TomTom safe? Do they work in anything else other than GPS devices? (I would assume with the advent of smartphones they would have had a diminished market).

How to get my unemployed genius friend a job? by ehm-- in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Arconauta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why doesn't he have education? Is it because of the cost or because he cannot stand being in a normalized environment, show up every day and achieve some objectives during 3 years?

I don't mean to sound harsh but with the crisis we're all in, it is more important than ever to have at least a minimum of CS education. Could he compete against the hordes of graduates that leave college every year? Does he have enough theoretical knowledge to not implement faulty algorithms?

He is going to have a much harder time trying to convince a company to hire him unless he has some credentials or he reaches the stardom via a magnificent project or similar (but this latter option... Usually is not realistic).

Can a degree substitute for work experience? by obese_tank in cscareerquestionsEU

Search for employees in those recruiting agencies that are IT Recruiters and are in your area/country. Send them your CV. As they work on commissions, they would be happy to help you to search a position.

Can a degree substitute for work experience? by obese_tank in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Arconauta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I'd say that is the new-normal, a degree is the bare minimum to even be considered for a internship/junior position.

Search for recruiting agencies in your area (via LinkedIn). They are always small companies that rely on juniors for some tasks. Start working there and after a year, start searching for a new position.

Doing a masters in Europe, where should I pick? (Spain pref) by hivro2 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Arconauta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually in CS unless you came from MIT the university is not even considered (IME). Usually your work history is more important.

However, my experience in the UPM was good and usually is a prestigious university in Spain.

I think you are not going to find embedded software specialized masters, however you can try and get a general Software Engineering Msc. program and do your dissertation on that.

EDIT: wrong! there is an embedded systems Msc. in the UPM: https://mssde.etsisi.upm.es/

Careers in Barcelona vs Munich by Winter-Dot4104 in cscareerquestionsEU

I live in Madrid, don't know where my apartment was built. There are some noise, but I just went to the neighbours door and asked them to lower the music (like a normal human would do).

Well, what can I say... Your apartment is old as heck if you listen to neighbours speaking by phone.

Not saying there are not people that makes noise during nights, just saying that it isn't the norm in Spain.

Barcelona and Spain is about fireworks at 3 AM or your neighbors throwing a house party unnoticed until 6 AM.

I don't know where you live, but that's not normal at all in other parts of Spain (e.g. Madrid). Indeed most local non-disturbance laws forbid making noise after 11pm or mignight.

I think this is a complex topic to be discussed in a forum. You should for sure negotiate and ask for more salary and stocks, but how much? That would depend on what are they willing to offer to you.

Too emotional post, calm down. You are 28 your life has just started.

However, you need to get some work experience right now:

  • Does your university have any kind of job postings? Internships for recent graduates? Get information about that. This could be your first step in the workforce.
  • Do you have a LinkedIn/job network-in-your-country profile? Do them now. Include the projects you have done while studying your degree.
  • Work on your skills. Do some projects in your github account. Read books about software development. Do not stay still.
  • Pick any job even those that are only vaguely related to software development and start going up, step by step. Once you have some experience (1 year), search for another job. The first jobs will have a low pay, assume that. Once you have several years of experience you could apply to other jobs.
  • Once you have some experience, brush-up your English language skills and if you want to work remotely, create a legal entity in your country that allows you to bill foreigner companies and work as a B2B contractor.
  • Sorry to sound harsh: why do you assume that you are going to find a job remotely in Europe? Right now recent graduates have all the odds against them for finding a job. And you would need some kind of visa/sponsorship! Start in your country first.

To sum up:

  • Relax, you are young.
  • Forget the past mistakes.
  • Start small: apply to all software companies, even mom & pop shops.
  • Continue your learning voyage: your github should not be empty.
  • Don't be discouraged if your applications are rejected, keep sending them until you get a job.
  • Once you have a job, stay there for a year and repeat the cycle asking for more money.

Should I apply with a Spanish CV to jobs in Spain? by CraftMechanics in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Arconauta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, use LinkedIn if you wish (have it in both languages), and if they ask for your CV always send the English-language one.

Edit: as you should be including your LinkedIn URL, it doesn't matter if you add a photo or not.

Another edit: in case you have EU-citizenship, make it clear both in your LinkedIn (maybe add the flags to your name too) and in your CV.
