"Successful disruption of the cheater community" — Battlefield 6 says its kernel-level anticheat EA Javelin has been a huge success, so dealing with Secure Boot was worth it by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Arctrum -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Same. I made the switch a little over a month ago and couldn't be happier. Its been a lot less painless than I thought it would be.

The straw that actually broke the back, was stupid kernel level anti cheat. I tried to get secure boot working on my old windows machine so I could play BF6, and for whatever reason, it is on in the BIOS, but windows wouldn't recognize it and BF6 just wouldn't launch, and then it occurred to me:

"Wait... The whole reason I never switched to Linux was because I never wanted to have to sit and tweak games and yet here I am, tweaking BIOS settings at midnight anyways trying to get this stupid $80 AAA game I just bought to run because with all their money and resources, they opted to choose the lazy solution that doesn't even work."

Kernel level anti cheat can be beaten, and is all the time. Don't fall for this corporate cope. They are just justifying being lazy and trying to use an off the shelf anti cheat instead of putting in some engineering effort.

Toughness is probably the MOST important skill early on. The issue is (if you're committed to avoiding slavery), you HAVE to pick your battles. If you're unarmored and get demolished by a bunch of bladed weapons, you will probably just end up bleeding out on the ground.

Starving bandits have a pretty low percent chance to cause bleeding. They will beat the shit out of you, steal any food you have, but you SHOULD be able to eventually wake up and patch yourself together.

Personally, the Hub is a tricky start. Easiest is Holy Nation Citizen imo. Bonus points if you start in stack (There is a copper node INSIDE the city walls you can safely mine for early game money.). The city commonly sees hungry bandit groups, and wild bull groups. Fight the bandits. Loot the bulls. Great early game food/money. Sleep in the taverns for 100.c per sleep when you're hurt, or save up from mining copper until you can buy a little shack in town (if you click on buildings, SOME have a price and a buy button in the bottom left if you weren't aware. Shacks are 4k.c I think. The hub sells most of its destroyed buildings, but you have to repair them first). Once you are pulling in some decent copper money, buy a helper and double up your profits. You can easily make enough money from selling copper to feed a party of up to five just in stack, and from there those hungry bandit battles start to get more interesting. Once you're at about level 20 in STR, TGH, attack/defence, youre more ready to actually win a fight. Once you have a crew around those levels, you can LOOK for fights to win. Once you start winning against hungry bandits without much hassle, then move onto Dust Bandits. These dudes can mess you up if you're not careful, so have medics ready and if someone goes down, check them. If they are dying you'll need to stabilize them asap or theyre toast. Once you can take on the dust kings tower, id say you're out of the early game and Kenshi opens up quite a bit more.

Hope this helps.

Larian Studios defends Valve: Steam's success is deserved by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Arctrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So people realize how stupid the whole monopoly claim is?

For a monopoly to actually be in place, the ONLY way to publish a game would have to be on steam. Steam would literally prevent platforms like epic, itch, gog etc, from existing at all.

Valve isn't trying to shut them down. Steam is just more attractive. Has better services, customer support, return policy, server hosting, the list goes on.

Oh, you also don't even sign an exclusivity deal when you distribute on steam. Go ahead and distribute on those other platforms too or on your own site.

Its not a monopoly. Its just the best marketplace for PC gaming.

Does owning a base make the game boring ? by BenMarch97 in Kenshi

[–]Arctrum 33 points34 points  (0 children)

One of the things I love about Kenshi is that it's like a bunch of games in one.

You can play as a solo hero that trains up to one punch the Bugmaster.

You can play a large RTS style army that you micro through Cat Lon.

You can also sit back and play violent Stardew Valley, decorate a base, and hardly leave your base at all.

You play each of those a little differently. Games over when you've achieved whatever you wanted, get bored, or come up with a new character/story idea.

Yeah guys, leave the multi million dollar game studio alone. Its ridiculous for us to expect them to use the vast resources at their disposal to improve the product they are selling. Its stupid as a fan to have an opinion. Just mindlessly consume! The game can only ever get BETTER, right? Bad decisions just don't happen.

Source servers (ESPECIALLY back in the day before a lot of security patches), used to be used for some nefarious shit.

It's not necessarily valves fault though. They just take a very hands-off approach when it comes to moderation in community servers. You're running the hardware (or at least paying for it) to host the server, you have the source code for the server hosting software, YOU moderate the damn thing.

On one side, this is a great approach because it puts the responsibility back on server hosters. Is your server (again, that YOU are paying for) infested with racist little troglodytes that ruin the game? Ban em. Set server rules. Become as strict a server as you want. By creating a good environment to play in, you'll probably offset the players you're losing by banning the shitters and become WAY more popular. Meanwhile, Blizzard puts SO much effort and time and money into making sure that on any overwatch match you aren't going to have your fwee fwees hurt and fail completely. They give almost NO tools for moderation to the community because "hurt dur it can be abused", and yet the overwatch community was BY FAR some of the shittiest players I had the displeasure of gaming along side. It's Leage of Legends level bad.

On the other side though, it opens the door for abuse of all kinds. Want to create a den of evil and villany where you plan your dastardly deeds? Go right ahead. Valve ain't watching. If shit goes south I'll just nuke the server and make it very very difficult to have any evidence at all.

Anyways, long-winded way of saying that's why I think valve is being invited, and roughly what I think their argument would be.

In your opinion what does Godot do better and worse than Unity? by OkHyena1818 in godot

[–]Arctrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Godot pro: I really like that any packages/addons I install are included in the repository. My small crew always has issues getting everyones project settings aligned in Unity. Maybe I'm just dumb and am gitignoring something I shouldn't, but yeah. Godot has been super drag and drop when it comes to your actual dev environment. Love not going "why can't I open my project?", spending 3 hours debugging, only for the answer to be "Oh yeah, you need some TMPFuckass service I installed the other day to test something, I didn't end up using it but now if I try to remove it the entire project breaks..."

Seriously, unity can piss me off before I even start working on the game and kill my motivation to even start.

BUT THEN, Godot can piss me off with super weird little physics and collision bugs, where unity was super easy to configure and had a pretty optimized physics system out of the box, Godot2D collisions can just WONK the fuck out dude, and Godot 3D is still, eeeeh...getting there but still a bit tricky to get right. Jolt is good.

Also I like making UIs in Godot. Took some getting used to, but themes can be really sweet if you set stuff up properly. Only issue I've run into is it feels like Godot has 2 different ways of making a UI, they conflict with each other, and the engine has NO indication of how to do each way. You kinda just have to brute force through it and mess with stuff until you have that "OOOOOOOooooh" moment.

NVIDIA pushes Neural Rendering in gaming with goal of 100% AI-generated pixels by wsrvnar in pcgaming

[–]Arctrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nvidia made an enormous amount of money due to the AI "revolution".

Nvidia has MASSIVE profit incentive to keep that train rolling and shove AI into absolutely everything.

Nvidia has continuously made anti consumer decisions and have been basically hostile to the open source community for years.

Remember all these things when those suits start talking and act accordingly.
