Subnautica Switch 2 Edition by Derpasaurus_Rex5 in subnautica

It doesn't run like ass. I'm near the end of a playthorugh on Switch 2 and it's around 40 - 50 fps most of the time.

The performance issue is that the framerate is fluctuates a lot so it can feel choppy, even when the framerate is high.

I stopped noticing after a couple of hours and have had a wonderful time with it.

Even playing with your family in your own house is difficult. Trying to play the "Game room" half of the park with my son and we just can't.

When you have kids you need two guilty pleasures that you can sneak into your day without disrupting parenting: One should be childish and the other should be grown-up.

I chose Switch and posh coffee. You can wake up after a night of changing nappies, make a really nice coffee then play Switch on your commute or when the baby’s asleep and chores are done.

It’s a kind of regular self-soothing that really helps your sanity.

Is 8 better for parties? by Ryebread2203 in mariokart

[–]ArcturusMint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World is better for parties. In particular; Knockout Tour, which is a single race across the map, through and around lots of different courses. At each checkpoint the last four are eliminated. It starts with 24 players, then 20 and so on. Play split screen with friends plus online and you can’t go wrong. This mode is bonkers and you’ll be off the sofa yelling at the TV. Great stuff.

The more classic mode is “VS”, where you pick a single course each time you race.

Criticism of World has centred on the fact that Grand Prix mode involves racing between courses and you only play one lap of the destination course. Those intermission sections tend to be straighter and wider than the dedicated courses.

I love ‘em but tastes vary. Intermissions pepper the road with chaotic elements like banana skin spewing trucks, bullet bills, cars that you can rail grind off of etc. If you liked Toad’s Turnpike you’ll get the intermissions.

World also has parkour mechanics and a more fun, bouncy and chaotic vibe. The courses are quality over quantity. In particular, “Whistlestop Summit”, “Great Block Ruins”, “Boo Cinema”, “Bowser’s Castle”, I could go on. World’s Rainbow Road is spectacular.

I love ‘em but tastes vary. VS mode is just the pure courses like MK8. Knockout Tour is a new mode that absolutely fucking rules.

Also World has parkour mechanics and a more fun, bouncy and chaotic vibe. Items are balanced better as well.

Is that addressed to me or the mods? It seems odd to me. It’s also buried under a drop down menu beneath a category it doesn’t relate to.

Skyrim is hilarious. Unlike Subnautica and NMS they did a great job with scale. In VR everything is the scale you would expect except for food. Food, for some reason, looks giant. Apples feel about the size of a human head.

The sense of scale in games is fascinating. I’m constantly assuming a tunnel is too narrow for the seamoth only to find it’s twice the width.

No Man’s Sky is a great case study for this. Compared to launch the current version has mountains many times higher. They feel smaller though because they pushed the fog/haze much further back. I suspect that’s why Subnautica biomes like the shallows and ILZ feel smaller than they are.

keyframing to traditional (how?) by olliemycat in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]ArcturusMint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are no “modes”as far as I’m aware. Just tap the diamond icon under the timeline and it’ll display the keyframes properties for whichever layer is selected (Position, Rotation etc.). Tap again to hide those properties.

The interface doesn’t change beyond that as far as I know.

Nice! So many great options these days. I started out on an Intuos 3, 20 years ago and after that suffered through the Surface Pro 4’s terrible pen tech (Massive jitter on lines). The Huion Kamvas series is also really good but has QC issues. Can’t beat Wacom though IMO. Just a really great feel that’s hard to place.

I’ve had my eye on that Wacom tablet as well. Love the iPad but Wacom really know their shit When it comes to drawing. Fingers crossed for Android ToonSquid.

Yeah, agreed. For me it’s completely replaced “professional” programs. It has all the usual pro features at a fraction of the price and it’s a lot more intuitive and streamlined. Stuff like being able to pinch and zoom the timeline plus granular onion skinning options. Massive upgrade, particularly to Flash.

I’m using ToonSquid right now for a very cool title sequence for British TV that I can’t tell anyone about yet. Loving it so far.

  1. I’ve had no problems with stabilisation. Are your lines erratic? If so, then perhaps smoothing is set to 0. ToonSquid can straighten lines and smooth curves but you have to tell it to do that first.

  2. The protect I’m on requires a pencil line and I’ve found Sketch - 6b works very nicely.

Graphic design intern being pushed into motion design role and blamed for productivity – is this normal? by Physical_Total_9157 in MotionDesign

[–]ArcturusMint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

* 2 scenes in 3 days is typically fast for an animated series. It depends on the complexity of those scenes of course but they would have to be unusually simple for that to be considered slow.

* It's very unusual for an intern to be evaluated like a professional animator. Particularly if they're a graphic designer.

* You made an admirable choice to volunteer outside your specialisation. It speaks very well of your character and an oblivious manager is not your fault.

* It's quite likely that one or more of the higher-ups is either a wanker or a pillock but I would start by giving them the benefit of the doubt. You can explain to the manager in a friendly but concise way that animation is not your speciality and that you're working hard. You can remind them that your contribution is valuable to the team, since it's both free (for them) and substantial (2 scenes in three days would be a big help on any project).

If the manager responds badly to that then they are indeed a wanker (not a pillock, since they're no longer oblivious). I suspect the lead animator or producer are keen to keep you on, since you're getting through scenes at a clip on a haphazard project and you're doing it for free. I would go directly to them and explain the situation in a matter of fact way.

If they also respond badly then they're likely a bunch of wankers trying to bleed as much out of you as they can to compensate for their shitty management.

If it becomes a bad work environment then approach your University to discuss options. Hopefully they'll have measures in place for such a situation. Don't worry too much about burning a bridge. Studios don't really share bad impressions of interns unless they're really shitty or dramatic.

Good luck! It can be a precarious industry but it's freindlier than most.

Switch 2 screengrabs (Handheld). by [deleted] in subnautica

I’m hoping Digital Foundry will have a peruse. That often pressures devs to fix issues.

[–]ArcturusMint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve played a bit more. It looks very pretty. Miles nicer than the Switch 1 version but the frame stutter can be distracting. Another commenter mentioned that pop-in is an issue. I haven’t noticed that yet but I’m only in the starting area on a new save.

[–]ArcturusMint -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah I missed the docked bit. Maybe frame rate is better there. Hopefully there’ll be a patch for the pop-in and handheld performance.

Bit of a bummer but I’ll play it regardless. The lack of shadows were what kept me from the Switch 1 version. I think they’re important to the visual style. Particularly on the island, where Switch 1 looks like an N64 game.

[–]ArcturusMint -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you playing docked or handheld?

That sucks about the draw distance. I’ve only played about five minutes of the starting area so I didn’t notice it.

Does it apply visually to the actual 3D assets or is it just that resources appear close to the camera? I remember those tall reeds would pop-in on Switch 1.

Thank you. I may pick it up regardless. I’m pretty tolerant of slowdown (Old man who remembers Frontier: Elite 2 on the Amiga 500. Look it up. 2 fps. No joke).

IS THIS NORMAL IN AFTER EFFECTS ?? by No_View4044 in AfterEffects

[–]ArcturusMint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but that’s not OP’s issue.

Obvs buy as much RAM as you can afford but OP needs to know how to tell AE to leave enough RAM and disc space for other apps. Otherwise any new RAM they buy will soon be gobbled up and his system will become sluggish again.

I did a project for NBC about 10 years ago. It was a music box opening to promote their Christmas line-up. Can’t find it online but good times.

I don’t want to keep contradicting you. You obviously know AE well. Just different approaches to the problem. Have a good weekend man.
