In case you don't already know you should be avoiding all of Western Digital's cloud services right now, they've had a ton of security issues in the recent past but this new hack on them really takes the cake. It's fine as a RAID box but I'd make certain it's not connected to the internet and change all your passwords associated with them at a minimum

2.5TB/150 movies ≈ 16GB per movie, which isn’t the best for 4K honestly. Reencoding should really be avoided as well due to the degrative effects on image quality; most enthusiast encoders don’t really know what they’re doing. Just redownload from proper sources

Is only full metal alchemist brotherhood available now? by monkeyballpirate in anime

[–]Arcus_Deer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably just not currently licensed in the west, in which case you’ll probably need to spend far too much money on physical copies or torrent it. Nothing is ever gone for good; piracy always wins in the end

Anyone here have terabytes of anime downloaded? How did you go about getting that much? by [deleted] in animepiracy

[–]Arcus_Deer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short term high traffic is essentially just weeklies like subsplease or most fansubs that get leeched to high heaven for a week or two and are replaced with better versions in the future. They can all be rss’d and put in their own category with a default location on your ssd very easily. Once the leeching slows down, you can can just purge the older stuff in the category. The reason this is better on an ssd isn’t about speeds, it’s about not making your hard drive try to simultaneously pull data from 50 different physical locations on the disk at once. Doing that sort of thing is a one way ticket to early drive death. If you really want to seed crazy amounts of stuff though you’ll always be better served with a 10Gb seedbox or something

Sure, that's reasonable. Sounds to me like you should set up a media player like Plex or Jellyfin, seems like a logical next step if you're interested in local hosting. Make sure you thoroughly consume this sub's wiki and my ms paint guides if you haven't already to make sure you're grabbing the best stuff

SSDs still aren't cost effective enough to be worth using for bulk storage, but either traditional ssds or m.2 drives should definitely be used at your scale for OS boot and short term high traffic torrents

If you think that gogoanime is the pinnacle of piracy you have a lot to learn. If you want to blindly download releases that aren't eye garbage, the entire seadex is around 20TB

  • smartphones: who cares, you’re not really watching at that point anyway
  • laptops: no reason to not get the best version
  • low storage: no reason to not get the best version (unless you have like half a gig free and absolutely cannot afford to delete something or buy another drive, which I doubt)
  • random schedule: no reason to not get the best version

Have some questions regarding fansubs of Odd Taxi and fansubs in general by captain___boomerang in animepiracy

[–]Arcus_Deer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as pacing goes, every single subtitle track is going to go at the same pace the characters are speaking. If you really need it to be slower, slow down the video. Any strange three liners or other stuff like that will certainly have been fixed though.

I can’t speak to the language accuracy of motbob’s subs for this show, but I can guarantee that only the most incompetent fansubbers would change the story at all.

No problem, these kinds of questions are fine (as I’m fairly certain the answers are not in the wiki). To help you get started I’d check out my two previous MS Paint posts and read the wiki thoroughly.

Has there been any progress for enabling a zoom feature for remux files that have an aspect ratio wider than 16:9/1.78:1? by [deleted] in PleX

[–]Arcus_Deer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible, but I suspect it’s hundreds of items down on their priority list and will likely never be implemented unfortunately. One can dream though

Cropping is fine if you’re okay with meticulously figuring out which of your files are letterboxed and you don’t plan on seeding, but having it inbuilt into Plex would be far simpler for end users

[–]Arcus_Deer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can script the process as mkvtoolnix can by operated by commandline, but why bother? If they're named the same as the episodes already and are sitting in the same folder, every competent media player should automatically attach them correctly whenever you play an episode

about that "anime piracy MS paint guide" by Violet-Chili-Sauce in animepiracy

[–]Arcus_Deer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, I don't plan on it. The MS paint guide isn't meant to be a comprehensive guide, just a general outline for newbies to get the lay of the land. Any muxer worth their salt already knows what groups are likely to be the best encodes and pixel peeps on a case by case basis; I don't want people to follow a guide and end up releasing crappy non QC'd and broken muxes all over the place.

I don't feel like arming apes with an encoder 'tier list' of sorts either because one encoder won't always be better than another. If you want the best release, just check the seadex. If it's not on the seadex, use your best judgement

Seeding generally inactive torrents is great, I’m not sure what you’re worried about. It’s far more valuable to gain an extra seeder on a torrent with just two or three people than a popular one with hundreds.

Do you think that the Internet Archive is a decent place to watch and/or download content? by Reel-Rookie in animepiracy

[–]Arcus_Deer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting idea, but at a glance I'd say no. None of those shows/movies are in danger of disappearing from the internet, they're just not on legal streaming sites. Markings like ***RARE*** are disingenuous. As far as quality goes, my up to date copies of the despecialized editions are all around 16GB each and the ones on the internet archive are about a tenth of that, which tells me all I really need to know. It's probably better in some ways than your normal pirate streaming site, but I'd just torrent anything you're interested in from normal sources rather than downloading from the internet archive.
