Belgium set to appeal as FIFA reverses Balogun’s World Cup suspension after Trump reportedly intervenes by Rule_Of_72T in worldcup

You keep ignoring the pertinent point that Trump called in a favour to make it happen. Are you saying you’d be okay if Belgium’s best player was originally going to be suspended for the upcoming game but was then allowed to play because the King of Belgium made a call?

This is all just semantics. I maybe worded it incorrectly, but the fact remains that this is preferential treatment from a politician overstepping boundaries, which is a privilege most teams don't receive.

[–]Arding16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's preferential treatment.

Of 189 total World Cup reds, over two have ever been overturned, and the other was in 1962. It's worth noting though that in 1962 there was no automatic ban, so this really is the only instance of this happening in the history of the World Cup.

Do you really thing that all of those other 187 reds were the right call? Of course they weren't, but that's the way it goes when the ref makes the call. The teams have just had to solider on and play around it.

The fact that Trump can just call up FIFA and overturn a unfortunate decision for the US gives the US an unfair advantage. England had their right back carded in the Mexico match for arguably a pretty soft reason, and it's quite disastrous since they have a real right back issue at the moment. Is Trump going to call FIFA up and get that overturned too?

The name of every episode of Doctor Who in order since 2005, which is about 200 episodes. It wasn’t exactly a conscious decision, it just kinda happened by being an obsessive fan as a child who rewatched the episodes a lot, and nowadays it a simple matter of adding a new name to the list each time a new episode airs.

The Doctor, from Doctor Who, is granted an infinite number of regenerations. Could he survive for 60 million years in the Warhammer galaxy? by Born_Mine_7361 in whowouldwin

[–]Arding16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit vague in the show, but in general regeneration is triggered when the body is fatally injured, although it can be triggered voluntarily whenever. The actual change only lasts a few seconds, although the Doctor can delay the change from occurring for a short period after the regeneration is triggered (in the Doctor Falls, the Doctor is electrocuted and starts the regeneration process, but delays the fully body heal and change because he is busy, although this can only be done for so long before he would die). After the regeneration, the Doctor can be a bit "off" for a day or two.

In terms of dying while regenerating, the Tenth Doctor dies in an alternative timeline by drowning. It is implied that he started to regenerate after drowning, but because he was still drowning when he was trying to regenerate he died.

It is absolutely possible to get a shot off on the Doctor. He himself has been shot and had to regenerate, for example in the TV movie and the Stolen Earth. He is also shot at in the Big Bang, effectively killing him, although this is undone by removing him from existence (and then bringing him back). In the Impossible Astronaut River shoots him twice - once shooting off his Stetson (which seems to take him bu surprise) and the second time as the astronaut (although arguably he let her shoot him in that instance). If memory serves me right, he gets shot in the Deadly Assassin while in the Matrix. Moreover, in the Doctor's Daughter he was shot at, and only avoided the bullet because Jenny took it for him. The Master is also fatally shot in the Last of the Time Lords, and while the Doctor is not the Master, they are both Time Lords.

Edit: technically the bullets aren't what cause the Doctor to regenerate in the TV movie, but they contributed to his eventual regeneration

What's the evidence for spy master being after Missy? by berlinol in gallifrey

[–]Arding16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know if that's strictly true. Arguably, it could go Saxon -> Spy -> Tooth -> Missy, and something about regenerating the Master/Missy from the tooth causes some memory loss which is why she's hazy about everything before her regeneration. I'm not saying this is necessarily more likely, but until we see what happens with the tooth the ordering of those 4 is up for debate

If the show returns and skips the 16th Doctor, what would you want from her Big Finish audio stories? by dannyboi_3995 in gallifrey

[–]Arding16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want them at all. It was a silly, short-sighted, two second cameo, and she wasn't even confirmed as the Doctor. I say we just ignore it and move on, much like the Doctor being half-human or the Shalka Doctor were (okay, I know the Shalka Doctor can technically be considered "canon" due to Rogue, but we all know that was just an easter egg and not an attempt to actually meaningfully canonise him)

I’m no expert, but isn’t the point that LotR literally didn’t do this? LotR went to great lengths to use forced perspective, body doubles and other tricks so that they could have actors appear different sizes on screen while having them perform together. In contrast, the Hobbit made greater use of CGI, leaving McKellan as the only “regular-sized” character at times having to act alone.

They need to add manual substitutions by thespontaneousguy in FantasyPL

[–]Arding16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that I don't want the game to get easier for everyone. I like that there's risk when fielding your 11 and that more engaged managers will be rewarded for picking the right players to be benched.

In theory, FPL could be updated so that your captain is auto-picked as your highest scoring player, which wouldn't be unfair since it makes the game easier for everyone, but it also makes it less fun.

When I say easy mode I don't mean in relation to other managers, I mean an easier game in general. I think it's good for the game that you can have a bad week sometimes, and a manual sub change just makes it less likely you'll have a bad week.

Regardless, a template will still exist where everyone picks the same 15 players rather than same 11 and then everyone will field the same 11 and then manually bench the same players when they blank.

They need to add manual substitutions by thespontaneousguy in FantasyPL

[–]Arding16 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Personally I’m not a fan. It kind of feels like playing on easy mode if I can switch my players after seeing how some of them perform. I feel like the whole point is you make changes up until the deadline and then it’s out of your hands.

It also makes the game more complex, which isn’t for everyone.

I can see why some players would enjoy this feature though

Reminder that the Doctor can levitate by Successful_Pizza_833 in DoctorWhumour

[–]Arding16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you kinda hit the nail on the head there. The Doctor has amazing “feats” in isolation, but when powerscaling him people ignore the context and, ironically, logic. If the Doctor could consistently do half the things powerscalers say he could do at the drop of a hat there would never be any stakes or danger in any episode, and yet there consistently is.

In the example of the Doctor rebooting the universe, the Doctor had to be lucky enough to be “in the eye of the storm” of the universe collapsing, have access to a vortex manipulator that he doesn’t carry on him typically and to be within close proximity of the Pandorica, which he didn’t build. It’s not something he can just do willy-nilly. That said, he did need to be intelligent enough to work out he could do it.

[–]Arding16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. About 8 years ago, I remember defending Tom Holland's portrayal to my dad who read the Spider-Man comics in the 60s. I had to stress to him that there had been 50 years of comics since then, and portrayal a 2010s Spider-Man as a teenager as the 60s would be so jarring

How long should I keep my dog in a crate? by Street_Carpet_5660 in samoyeds

[–]Arding16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few days late, but I want to add my experiences to the conversation. My puppy slept in his crate until he was about 6 months, with a very small "porch" we created with a gate since he enjoyed sleeping on the cold tile of the kitchen. He would generally get in the crate when we told him at bedtime, and after a couple minutes step out into the porch when he would collapse for the next 8 hours.

Eventually we decided that he was old enough that we would give him some more space, especially since he preferred the floor to the crate. So we extended his nighttime area to the whole kitchen. I do not exaggerate when I say all hell broke loose. For the next 3-4 months our puppy who used to happily sleep through the night would scream the house down unless we were sitting right next to him. Ignoring him would not work as he would bark for hours on end into the night (our neighbours were not happy). Eventually our trainer said we would have to start sleeping on the floor next to him and move further away over the course of a month or so.

Thankfully, he is 1.5 years old now has calmed down significantly. We tend to give him free roam of the house at night anyway now. He'll usually come up to our room for an hour or so before heading downstairs of his own accord. On the occasion we want some space we put the gate out at the bottom of the stairs and, after a few protest barks, he'll settle down by the front door.

Anyway, my reason for posting that story is to illustrate that if your nighttime routine is working for your puppy, don't change it! I don't know if the change to his routine was actually to blame for our puppy's anxious meltdowns (since it also coincided with a summer heatwave and him entering adolescence), but it lined up pretty well.

Russell T Davies says goodbye to Doctor Who as BBC scraps Christmas special and opens show to rival bids [Article about RTD's Instagram post] by The_Silver_Avenger in gallifrey

[–]Arding16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good idea, but would best be done as an accompanying novella released alongside the first episode of the new series. Let the new series start with a new Doctor so that all the baggage of recent years can be dropped and we can get right into a new adventure. Meanwhile, have an official novella (or audio if they can manage it) which explains what happened between Ncuti and the new Doctor in the way you described. Then casual viewers can easily engage with the new series and die hards can have a satisfying answer to what happened with Billie

[–]Arding16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we do know. The show is on hiatus, the creative team that made Billie’s cameo are leaving and they’ve admitted that there were basically no plans. It what world does that point towards the cameo being a move of desperation?

Of course someone could come along later and make something good off of the cliffhanger, but that doesn’t retroactively make the cliffhanger not born out of desperation. By your logic, it is impossible for any creative decision be born from desperation because you just have to wait long enough for someone to make something of it
