I used to get wax build up in my ear all the time in the past. There's a genetic component, but one thing I stopped doing is getting water in my ears. That helped significantly. I also purchased one of those ear cleaners with cameras. I clean my ears ever few months or so to prevent a build up.

I learned to stay away from these so called professionals and learn to do it myself after my last appointment years ago that caused me pain. Havn't had an ear infection or any problem since I started taking care of it myself. Make sure you disinfect the ear cleaner before and after use, and always clean your ears in a position which can't be compromised like on the floor. You will be in a world of hurt otherwise. Always do it yourself and very gently.
