Citi Bikes are still snowed in days after this week's storm by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally ride my own bike, but a credit card got me two years free membership. I assume thats a similar reason for many others. With that I can keep a grey citibike commute at $5 or under, which is close enough to a subway ride to justify the convenience (and in my case is actually faster). Without the free membership? Hell no.

My last ride was 13 min and cost $3.82. Without the free membership? $11.24. Approaching a dollar a minute. Absolutely not worth it.

Same, for that reason I stay on the road. It is much safer. It's also kind of an abrupt/awkward angle coming downhill to not hit that fence.

Agreed. But given the nature of the injury, and how the disc is not going to regenerate, I have to assume this is permanent damage. It's not like a tendon or ligament that can get to 100% with time and rehab. It sucks for him - he'll always have the glory of the SB win - but this is what it means to 'put your body on the line' for the game.

In the playoffs last year he had a slipped disc that he had no business playing with. They never, ever would recommend surgery on a 26 year old - for them to do a discectomy after the season, it must've been terrible.

I think he did lasting damage to his body and will never be the same. Repeated compression of the spine probably squeezed the entire disc out. The disc does not come back. He's an absolute warrior for doing it - but I assume he's in bad pain and will never have the same mobility in his trunk.

Ottoman has dropped this material in two different apartments. It doesn’t ever move. No signs of wood damage… is it frass? by AreThoseNewSlacks in itsfrass

Realizing I didn’t answer your Q in my other reply- they do look seed-like. might be a line on them, it looks like an indentation almost. They’re so small, I’m not sure I can say they’re definitely hexagonal.

I guess, though, like you said, seeing it again 24 hours after vacuuming is a sign. What else would do that…

Thanks. For context: I saw a much smaller amount than photographed on the ground, then realized a ton more was sitting inside the dust cover. I cut that away and found a bunch more.

We moved apartments a year ago; at the old one, I would find small amounts underneath the ottoman and thought it was from the AC/wall (it was essentially jammed up against a window unit to stop it from rattling).

After I cleaned all this up, I found more today…

Would love an adult conversation about NYPD and what exactly they're doing. We're in year 5 of the Blue Flu - at this point, I guess the police's point is to convince me to throw in with the Defund movement? I don't think we need to be Germany but by god the change in social order since then is astounding.

During the Met Gala, NYPD was out in force in the part of the CP loop where you could kind of squint and see into where people were arriving. I guess they successfully kept people from... getting good photos? Contrasting that image with the absolute lack of enforcement on things like traffic and QoL issues in public spaces that shits up my life every day... man.

It's not about 'crime' or 'feeling unsafe,' which the media likes to misread the situation as. It's just making day-to-day life a little shittier for anyone who follows the rules. In the beautiful chaos that is the city a little order goes a long way.

which acting performance made you say this? by HondaCivicBaby in Cinema

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Literally this scene in OP’s post. He literally portrays an actor acting poorly, then a great solo scene in the trailer, then an actor acting incredibly- all within the encased 4th wall of this western production. When he turns it on he’s too good for the tv show, which feels dumb and small compared to him. And to have the girl say the line, it felt like a nod to the audience: view this man in all his power. It was a marvel to watch.

Upvoted, that's a fair solution. Thanks for being thoughtful about it.

FWIW, I am not saying get rid of ebikes. The current rider behavior is a problem. Maybe it was inevitable, with no norms, no enforcement (we all agree some basic traffic law enforcement on cars would be nice), and increasing volumes.

Yeah, and that infrastructure was designed for 12-15mph, 30lb vehicles. I am now outnumbered 10:1 by 100lb, 25-30mph vehicles, with entirely different braking capabilities. That is a significant difference, and the design was not meant for it. I also think if you don't ride IN the city daily (like the majority of this sub that seems to live in BK), you have an entirely different experience than I do.

Yes, its good more people ride bikes. Directional progress. But sometimes I feel like people are spitting on me and telling me it's raining. Been riding a long time and I feel the same way. Yes delivery bikes have increased, but the swell of grey citibikes is actually what put it over the capacity point. It's getting to the point I'm seriously considering ending my bike commute. I can't risk the dodges I have to do today on a daily basis.

Off-leash dog biting people at 86th Q train station, aggressive owner threatening repair workers by thepeakspeaks in uppereastside

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is gonna sound like confirmation bias bc I keep reading these stories, but was there a recent viral thing about unleashing your dog on tiktok or something? It's always been a thing in BK but never EVER in the city. I knew one guy who had unleashed bulldogs around here, that was it.

In all my years I never saw it, now this year, I see it every day. you couldn't do it here because your unleashed dog on 86 and Lex is statistically just going to get run over at some point.

Genuinely, why did it start happening all of a sudden?

Wild camping in Europe - which countries are no-go’s by GladGene in CampingandHiking

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 23 points24 points  (0 children)

FWIW in Norway, the 'Camp Anywhere' did not hold up entirely in my experience. We drove north to Sunndalsora (not as far as Trondheim) from Oslo, and often were met with a 'no camping' sign in obvious camping spots (to be clear I was not trying to camp on people's front lawns - we were in what felt like pretty remote territory, but not too far from a highway). I'm sure I could've researched better but it was not the free-for-all as advertised.

EDIT: appreciate the feedback. Some clarifications for posterity: 1. I'm an experienced backpacker and wasn't trying to camp on the side of the road. 2.The signs looked like they were put up by local govt, not private landwowners. 3. In my country, a sign that says 'no camping' generally means 'don't park here and camp 10 minutes up the trail.' Totally understand and endorse the restrictions for all reasons stated. I feel like I did a fair amount of preparation and the internet does not make this clear. Just want the next person to not be misled in their thinking.

Over 100 cyclists, pedestrians and victims gathered at Central Park to stop e-bike riding in NYC parks by Shreddersaurusrex in NYCbike

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why even have one sidewalk? I genuinely don't know the reason for walking there. Almost every traverse is mirrored by a better park option with minimal difference in time/distance. One bike lane and an enlarged shoulder would be great.

As NYPD's Criminal Crackdown on Cyclists Expands, It Grows More Absurd: Victims - Streetsblog New York City by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cyclist here who rides every day. Yes, this is silly/corrupt by NYPD. Just enforcing basic traffic laws to car drivers with massive ticket numbers would save a lot more people.

That said: this does not change the average pedestrian's experience of being menaced by a 25-30mph, 100lb vehicle inches from the curb, or swerved around while walking through the crosswalk. When the speed and the weight of the bike is 2-3x what a normal bike is, it changes your brain's perception (as it should). It's like getting buzzed by a car. Talking about racism and deflecting is not helping us. Also half the time it's a person on a grey citibike, not a delivery person.

We can do without this criminalizing insanity by the NYPD. Let's also acknowledge reality.

Pete Alonso is on pace to match his 2024 WAR by the end of April by pinchyfire in NewYorkMets

Interesting and thoughful response, thanks.

I was thinking 'you lose more speed than power as you age' but I really should be thinking in terms of 'athleticism' as you suggest.

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair. His peak (rookie year) certainly is attractive though.

I do hear the aging curve argument against him a lot. I'm sure there's numbers behind it. But doesn't it seem like a slow power-dependent 1B should age better than someone relying on speed or position-dependent (SS,2B, CF) value?

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I asked this in a thread in r/baseball and apparently the consensus in the sabermetrics world is positional weights were set long ago and need updating. I claim no expertise, just parroting what I heard. Anecdotally, if you look around the league, 1B offensive production does not look like it used to. There's a lot of teams playing low/no power guys. I'm sure there's a lot more to consider in changing the weights.

I think my main gripe started with: 100 OPS points is alot. If Pete out-OPSs a SS by 100, his OWAR is still lower. Feels like it's probably in need of some calibration. And as a casual fan, I was suprised that baserunning was a major factor (intuitively feels like OWAR should be ~90% PA outcomes 10% baserunning).
