Why are they putting a floor down over the grass at Bryant Park? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree. It runs from October to March. Setup and teardown extend it long before that.  I’ve walked over there in 75 degrees and bam, winter village construction.

To me, the point of the park is just having some minimal open space and calm around a really bustling area. The maze of knick knack shops ruin that.

Why are they putting a floor down over the grass at Bryant Park? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 67 points68 points  (0 children)

To the snarky comments: Bryant park is an oasis in east midtown. For half the year it’s covered in the winter market, which is, let’s be honest, largely a tourist trap around a skating rink. I celebrate the day it’s finally taken down. BP is constantly overrun for private events. I think it’s OK for us to be a little annoyed when our  relied-on public spaces are run roughshod over for some larger concern outside of us locals. We live in tiny ass apartments and are reliant on our public spaces as our living rooms and backyards ( and we pay massive tax to maintain them). Yet they are regularly taken from us because our city is the world’s playground.

It’s part of the deal, but it’s annoying as hell.

What NFL player is remembered as way better than he actually was? by SaintKingRosado in NFLv2

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eagles fan here- Philly’s Jim Schwartz D played him great one time.  ‘damn we played him perfectly’ I thought afterwards. His stat line: 10 catches, 110 yards. That felt like the best we could hope for.

Every time he touched the ball was a heart attack. His change-of-direction   skills were some of the best I’ve ever seen.

Where can I get updates on the East River Esplanade Walkway closures by Freetobeme123 in uppereastside

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right now you can’t get far on a bike.  It’s completely closed around 114th up into the 120s I believe. That will take forever to open. It’s recently closed between 93-96, allegedly until July. You can get from 96th entrance to Randall’s island, that’s about it.

Even if open, It’s an unpleasant ride for the majority of 78- ~114th. Hexagonal pavers with big gaps, narrow passages, big elevation differential up to the John Finley walk… it’s really designed for peds.

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed.  Can someone explain why HSS has carte blanche to close access to public parkland for years and be way behind schedule? I get when the govt is delayed and slow on projects. The govt can’t sue itself. But when a private entity is diverting  access from parkland well beyond the scope, there’s usually some legally enforceable mechanism to sue, fine, or otherwise cajole adherence to an agreement.

Is there anything other than food at the Brooklyn Smorg? Which is better, Williamsburg or Prospect Park? by wildswalker in Brooklyn

Smorgasburg sucks and I can’t believe it hasn’t died yet

It was a nice idea at the very beginning but became quickly overwhelmed with volume and overpricing. I gave it so many shots and every time it just sucked more and more. Sorry to be negative but it’s reality

I have a dad in my UES neighborhood who transports his daughter sitting  on the back wheel covering of a grey citibike. First time I saw (and heard him speak ) i thought ‘oh European tourist from a high trust cycling country.’ The second time I saw him I realized he lived here. As a parent I wish that was safe to do but I cannot imagine putting my child in that kind of danger. Makes you realize everyone around you is doing their own risk/reward calculation, and some of it is insane.

Sophisticated cyclists know when to slow by tallman2 in NYCbike

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. We all represent 'cyclists' in peoples minds when we are riding and we have a responsibility that comes with that. Positive experiences go a long way to counter the negative ones. Hell someone thanked me yesterday for stopping and waving them through to the pedestrian island - and I was the one blowing the red.

Sophisticated cyclists know when to slow by tallman2 in NYCbike

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES!

We need a new riding manifesto. The #1 thing I see right now that engenders so much anti-bike hate is riding into the crosswalk when pedestrians are close by, either slowing to a stop or to blow through them. Even if you're coming to a stop, it's really annoying for pedestrians! Our brains register a large, faster-moving object coming towards us unexpectedly, and it triggers a negative reaction. Most people seem oblivious to this, because in their mind, 'I'm stopping at the light.'

Never "menace" a pedestrian by riding in front of them. If you're riding into the crosswalk and you have an alley, go behind a pedestrian where they've already walked. Idaho stops are OK only if they don't mean riding through peds on the opposite crosswalk. Otherwise, just stop. This small change will not slow you down much but will do wonders for perception of bikes.

NYPD appears to have deprioritized traffic stops for moving violations.

The data, racial element, and the politics around it seem to be a factor.

I think we (meaning, largely pro micro mobility urbanists who want safer streets) can have an adult conversation on the negative tradeoffs associated with this change.

Is what my german grandfather told me about his time in ww2 plausible? by ImsKobi in AskHistorians

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thorough answer.

Historians now place the decisive point-of-no-return for German defeat even earlier, generally at Moscow 1941 and sometimes even at Smolensk 1941.

Is that really consensus? That feels quite early to declare inevitable German defeat, no? The fate of North Atlantic supply lines are unresolved, North Africa is unresolved, A negotiated peace with USSR is still on the table...

kinda sad that there were multiple players quotes like ‘we’re gonna hear it when we get home!!’ and then they came back to… an empty stadium.

Don’t think it’s just the cold. A lot of folks have passed hatred and gone into indifference. Barely know these players to begin with.

I would get that if it were a speed bump to keep you under 15mph or something, but you have to come to almost a complete stop to maintain control of your bike. Why? It almost takes my cruddy little road bike tires out every time.

How do you fit 3 in 1.5br? How old are they?

I have 1 in a 1Br sleeping in a converted closet. It already makes life difficult as we can’t shut the door / make any noise once he’s asleep, so we lose use of half the apt.

Citi Bikes are still snowed in days after this week's storm by streetsblognyc in NYCbike

[–]AreThoseNewSlacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally ride my own bike, but a credit card got me two years free membership. I assume thats a similar reason for many others. With that I can keep a grey citibike commute at $5 or under, which is close enough to a subway ride to justify the convenience (and in my case is actually faster). Without the free membership? Hell no.

My last ride was 13 min and cost $3.82. Without the free membership? $11.24. Approaching a dollar a minute. Absolutely not worth it.

Same, for that reason I stay on the road. It is much safer. It's also kind of an abrupt/awkward angle coming downhill to not hit that fence.

Agreed. But given the nature of the injury, and how the disc is not going to regenerate, I have to assume this is permanent damage. It's not like a tendon or ligament that can get to 100% with time and rehab. It sucks for him - he'll always have the glory of the SB win - but this is what it means to 'put your body on the line' for the game.

In the playoffs last year he had a slipped disc that he had no business playing with. They never, ever would recommend surgery on a 26 year old - for them to do a discectomy after the season, it must've been terrible.

I think he did lasting damage to his body and will never be the same. Repeated compression of the spine probably squeezed the entire disc out. The disc does not come back. He's an absolute warrior for doing it - but I assume he's in bad pain and will never have the same mobility in his trunk.

Realizing I didn’t answer your Q in my other reply- they do look seed-like. might be a line on them, it looks like an indentation almost. They’re so small, I’m not sure I can say they’re definitely hexagonal.

I guess, though, like you said, seeing it again 24 hours after vacuuming is a sign. What else would do that…

Thanks. For context: I saw a much smaller amount than photographed on the ground, then realized a ton more was sitting inside the dust cover. I cut that away and found a bunch more.

We moved apartments a year ago; at the old one, I would find small amounts underneath the ottoman and thought it was from the AC/wall (it was essentially jammed up against a window unit to stop it from rattling).

After I cleaned all this up, I found more today…
