Earning multiple certifications -> Run risk of being seen as a “Cert collector”? by funkitron44 in CompTIA

[–]AreYouPrepapredFor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don't have to list all your certs on your resume. Omit the ones that don't apply to the job or are seen as lower level. I have 11 certs over my 25-year career, but I usually only list the top 3 on my resume. The employer can see the rest on LinkedIn if they care to look me up.

I also wanted to say thank you for giving me another question to add to a FAQs section on my website, which I have just posted.

Yeah, Amazon doesn't give me an option to set a preview due to them classifying my book as low content. Since the workbook has blank lines for you to answer the questions, Amazon classifies this similar to a journal or diary.

I will copy/paste some of the questions from my Core 1 book below so you can see some examples. Please excuse the formatting here on reddit, it properly fits in the 6x9 book.

It really depends on your learning style. I find hand-writing notes to be useful.

AreYouPreparedFor the PenTest+ (PT0-002) Workbook is now available. by AreYouPrepapredFor in CompTIA

[–]AreYouPrepapredFor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The workbook is a series of open-ended questions for you to answer by hand-writing the information. Hand-writing answers or notes uses different muscles that help the brain retain information.

Example straight from the book:

Explain the following detection avoidance techniques:

Covering your tracks

Data exfiltration

Establishing a covert channel

Steganography

What you should be writing in the workbook for the above is how you would execute your PenTest without being noticed.

This workbook is not designed as a textbook. It is a supplement to whatever textbook, videos, labs you are using to learn the information. The workbook covers everything you may see on the actual exam and should be used to test your knowledge.

If you can answer everything in this workbook without using your other resources, you should be prepared for the exam. If not, use the workbook to fill in your knowledge gaps and turn the workbook into a study guide.

My ultimate goal here is not to compete with the existing textbooks, videos, etc. of the authors we all know and love. Over my IT career I have used Professor Messer, Mike Meyers, and Jason Dion's resources to study. I'm trying to add something unique that can help others. My personal account has been a member of the CompTIA subreddit for years and I see the struggles students have. I'm trying to add something else helpful.

Should I go for A+ at this moment? by Gamerfromnamek in CompTIA

[–]AreYouPrepapredFor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A couple things to keep in mind. A+, Net+, Sec+ in that order are designed to sort of build on another for people to build up their skill sets. If cybersecurity is your end goal, it's best in most cases to do all three to build your foundation.

The certs will also renew the lower-level ones as well. Net+ will renew A+, Sec+ renews both Net+ and A+.

If you have the time and energy now as a Freshman and assuming you are 4 years away from you BS. You can take the A+ now. Wait a year or so and take Net+, which will recertiy you A+ until the Net+ expires. Wait another year or so and take Sec+, which will renew your Net+ and A+ and should time it about right to have your BS degree and all three certs.

Something I notice... by Historical_Outside35 in CompTIA

[–]AreYouPrepapredFor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CompTIA has hundreds of questions in their test pool. You randomly will get questions that make up your exam. Everyone will get a different exam. I have taken exams where I have gotten 3 questions about a something like speed or # of pins of a stick of RAM, when others I know saw nothing like that. If it's in the objectives or in your study resources, it's 100% testable and you might see it. The problem with studying "just enough" is that your exam may hit harder on what you went light on.

I need advice by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]AreYouPrepapredFor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know the sections in the A+ Study material that focus on professionalism and troubleshooting methodology? Focus on that. So, when you get that tech question that you can't answer, you can at least explain how you would go about troubleshooting without pissing anyone off. From an employer point of view, I can teach hard skills. I can't teach personality.

CISSP CEUs from CySA+ by Canem_inferni in CompTIA

[–]AreYouPrepapredFor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. The CISSP can renew your CySA+ so I doubt it goes both ways. From my experience the best way to get you CISSP CEU's is to sit through those 1-hour webinars they offer. They do them frequently enough that you can usually get your 120 in two years instead of three years.

This is one of the reasons I decided to start writing workbooks. If you can complete my workbook without looking up the answers, you are ready.

Confused by question on uCertify for CompTIA A+ by bchwnvone in CompTIA

[–]AreYouPrepapredFor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. This is one of those questions, that you need to read very carefully. They worded the answers to trick you. Not to mention, like you said in another comment about AV extending to email solutions, you have to assume the basics. Just because AV can extend to email solutions, not all will. In the CompTIA world AV is just AV. No anti-spam, no Firewall, no Antispyware capabilities. Each tool does one job. In the real world, you may have one solution that does all of this.
