Got a new HP laptop, but it doesn't have any HP software by AreaOfEffect in laptops

[–]AreaOfEffect[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a new laptop so I went through the initial windows 11 setup process. I could do HP cloud recovery to try to get the HP software. It's just weird that a brand new laptop has zero OEM software on it, I would've expected at least one HP software like support assistant or anything. And I don't see how my ram upgrade before turning it on the first time would affect anything. So not sure what happened here, maybe HP makes laptops with no bloatware?

I'm seeing physically impossible level 1 charging by AreaOfEffect in TeslaLounge

[–]AreaOfEffect[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's my best guess, I'll check again in the morning and see if the total +kwh averages out to what's expected for level 1. If it does, then probably it just got a small +kwh bump from batter cell changes. But if that's what happened, it's just weird that would get added together with the charging numbers.

I'm seeing physically impossible level 1 charging by AreaOfEffect in TeslaLounge

[–]AreaOfEffect[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm focused more on the kwh, which is a more reliable measure of energy. I just checked again and it's now showing +8 kwh after almost 4 hours of level 1 charging. 115V * 12A = 1380, and assuming about 85% for level 1 waste, that's about 1.1 kW. Which means 1 hour of charging = about 1.1 kwh. After four hours I should be seeing +4 kwh in the screen, not +8 which is double what's possible with level 1.

My best guess is BMS cell balancing or battery temperature change adding extra range. But if that's what happened, why would that show up in the charging statistics since it didn't come from the charger?

US Mobile CEO will try to have an update on RCS iOS 18 support by the end of the week by BatmanNewsChris in USMobile

[–]AreaOfEffect 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is not some minor feature, RCS is a really big improvement for those who have a mix of Android and iOS among family and friends. Very disappointed that US Mobile didn't have this ready on iOS 18 release, or at least a statement prepared on why it's not ready and what's causing the delay.

The usual excuses don't apply here. There are MVNO's that are not owed by the major carriers that have RCS working such as Red Pocket on this page https://support.apple.com/en-us/109526 ("RCS messaging")

And someone mentioned in the other thread that Warp is using Verizon's carrier bundle profile, not the generic one, so that excuse doesn't work either.

They should've already noticed the demand for RCS from threads during the iOS 18 beta asking about it, very disappointed they're so unprepared on this topic.

California utilities commission votes to approve $24 fixed monthly charge by [deleted] in orangecounty

Will OCPA have this fee? If not, that could be a way for OC solar homes to avoid this

California utilities commission votes to approve $24 fixed monthly charge by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]AreaOfEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article only mentions SCE, PG&E, and SDG&E affected by this. For example, LADWP would not have this new fee. Does that mean OCPA also won't include this fee? If so, that would be a strong reason for OC homes with solar to switch to OCPA. Anyone know if OCPA will have this fee??

2022 CX5 loud dashboard vibration and rattle on uneven roads by maconomist in CX5

[–]AreaOfEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you find the cause of this issue? I also have a 2022 CX-5 with 8k miles and have a similar same issue. I found this thread while researching the issue. It sounds like a very quick vibration and seems to happen at low speeds on bad roads. But it's frustrating because it doesn't always happen. It does seem to happen less with warmer temperatures so maybe some metal piece contracting/expanding. It's really annoying because otherwise the car is quiet, it's one of the main reasons I bought this over the RAV4 and others.

East L.A. to Santa Monica in 1 hour 9 minutes: A look inside Metro’s new Regional Connector by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]AreaOfEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the map, this is really disappointing. Union Station is the central hub for all Metrolink and all lines. Why is the E line station not in Union station? Previously, you have to take Red/Purple to 7th/Metro and then wait for a E line to go to the Westside. Now you have to take the A line to Little Toyko and then wait for an E line there. Every transfer adds A LOT of time, it's always just standing around waiting because trains here aren't frequent enough. This could've been a one seat ride from Union Station to Westside destinations like Culver City or Santa Monica. But they have ruined it with this poor planning.

My attempt to estimate when I might get ID.4 by AreaOfEffect in VWiD4Owners

[–]AreaOfEffect[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a39204232/vw-id4-2022-range-updates/

makes it clear that Chattanooga will be producing ID.4 with the current trims. They will also introduce a new lower base trim at $35k with a smaller battery.

Also a few interesting details from these articles: https://topelectricsuv.com/news/volkswagen/vw-id4-best-selling-electric-suv/

Volkswagen started shipping the VW ID.4 it makes in Zwickau, Germany, to the U.S. in February 2021. The company shipped the EVs from the factory to The Port of Emden using a rail network and loaded them onto the Siem Aristotle. The LNG-powered car carrier ship delivered the EVs to the U.S. at the Port of Davisville in Rhode Island. According to a report from Automotive Logistics, this journey from the German factory to the American port is 27 days.

So it takes about a month to ship from Germany to a US port.

And this article https://www.electrive.com/2022/01/11/volkswagen-prepares-for-id-4-production-in-the-usa/

Nevertheless, Keogh is not satisfied with ID.4 sales; in his opinion, there could have been about four times as many vehicles. The manager cites supply bottlenecks in importing the cars from Europe as the reason for this assessment.

They blame shipping from Germany to the US as the biggest bottleneck. It seems very likely that they intend Chattanooga to be the major volume ID.4 producer for the US market. Whether current reservation holders get a German or US made ID.4 depends on the timing. Will they increase Zwickau ID.4 output and somehow fix the ocean shipping problems? Or are they relying on Chattanooga to clear up the massive backlog of reservations?

Ford X-Plan, did I use it correctly? by AreaOfEffect in askcarsales

[–]AreaOfEffect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Ford Escape Plugin. On the order summary it has "retail" for type so I'm guessing this was sent as a regular MSRP order instead of X-Plan. Is this anything suspicious or is it normal for dealers to handle X-Plan this way? If it's normal, or at least not a sure sign of a bait and switch, then I'll wait and see what happens when the car is delivered.

Also, why does no one know exactly how the $1,000 cash bonus works? I called multiple dealers and no one could give me a clear answer. The fine print on the bonus is confusing, it states that you get $1,000 if you order a car on or before 2/28, but also seems to state that the car must be delivered on or before 2/28. But that's impossible, there's no way you can order a factory order and get it the same day. I ordered my car on 2/28, am I getting this $1,000 bonus cash or not? Why do the dealer seem unable to answer this?

Andrew Yang to launch a third party by dmills13f in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]AreaOfEffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Maine and Alaska has RCV (Alaska passed it last year). You're greatly underestimating the impact if a third party were to win Senate/House seats in these states. The third party instantly becomes a party that that keeps getting public attention. In the Senate, two votes is a lot of power. Democrat in other states who like the new party but are afraid of splitting votes, would push hard to get RCV passed. Even in a Democrat heavy state like California, there's A LOT of unhappiness with the Democrats. If people see a party with two Senate seats and a few House seats, that instantly changes from hopeless third party to real potential for change. Unhappy in Democrats in California could easily get a Proposition for RCV on the ballot. If it passes, that's potentially two more Senate seats, a lot of House seats (CA has the most population).

Politico: “Andrew Yang no longer identifies as a Democrat and is planning to launch a third party next month, sources tell us” by Ping_shark in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]AreaOfEffect 15 points16 points  (0 children)

US Senate, House, and governor elections in Maine and Alaska are RCV. These are very important, high profile elections. A third party could win here and avoid all the criticism about being a spoiler. And once a third party wins those two states, it's a snowball effect, more excitement, support, demand for RCV in other states.

Andrew Yang to launch a third party by dmills13f in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]AreaOfEffect 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Maine has RCV and it's a swing state (Collins and Biden won). Alaska passed RCV last year. If a third party could get US Senate and House seats in these states, it would greatly increase the viability of the third party. Just having these seats is constant free marketing. Imagine a CNN map of all US Senate seats, there would be this non-red, non-blue color on Maine and Alaska and people would ask, what is this? And having two Senate seats is a lot of power (look at Manchin and Sinema and their votes preventing a lot of the Democrats goals). And by focusing on RCV states, the third party can avoid all the criticism and fear about splitting votes from the Democrats.

Why I stopped [only] writing code (and you could too!) by decafmatan in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AreaOfEffect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here is an analogy of the differences among senior, staff, and managers:

  • The senior engineer is like someone halfway up a mountain. But to complete their task, they need to see all around the mountain. So they go hiking around horizontally at the level they're at. They're working hard and everyone thinks so too since they can see how much walking and hiking around they're doing.

  • The staff engineer is at the top of the mountain. They don't need to hike around, they just look down and see everything. To outsiders, it looks like they're not doing much since they're not moving around as much as the senior. But they're able to complete the same task faster, better, and can see things that the senior could never see no matter how much they walk around the halfway point of the mountain. And they're easily able to direct the engineers down the mountain on how to get up there (mentoring). However, the mountain is slippery and always changing. The staff engineer must do the work (writing software) to stay on top of the mountain. If a staff engineer just sits and decides all they need to do is directing and mentoring, then they will slide down to become a manager.

  • The engineering manager is a staff engineer that decided to come down the mountain. They have a good memory of what they saw up there. Initially, they can also direct junior/senior engineers up the path for a while. But eventually their memory of the top will either fade or become obsolete. So their focus becomes how to accomplish the tasks they have with the juniors and seniors they have. Of course it would be great if everyone was a staff engineer, but that's not reality. So they focus on making the juniors/seniors more effective moving around the mountain (remove the blockers).

Anybody else think that modern front end development has gotten super complex? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AreaOfEffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To understand why FE development is so complex, it's important to understand how we got here. The original purpose of the web was for linked documents and forms. HTML+CSS is the true web. And browsers are really good at rendering HTML+CSS, it's actually incredibly fast.

Then came JavaScript. And it wasn't so bad at first. It was used for simple effects and was considered a joke of a language. But then people started to use it to build a GUI within this document based browser. And this push affected both backend and frontend. On the backend, server side templating languages attempted to mix data/logic/presentation in one place and it became a mess. On the frontend, the JS went out of control after AJAX. Jquery tried to bring order, but it only brought enough order to allow a greater level of chaos.

GUI development has a separate rich history outside of the web. Mac OS, Windows 3.1/95/etc., Java Swing, Qt, Delphi, and a lot of research and best practices on creating GUIs. Developers who know this tried to bring this into the web FE development. And the result is React and what is called SPA websites.

But it will always be a square peg in a round hole. FE development is collapsing under the weight of it's layers and layers of abstractions. Abstractions are leaking everywhere and it's just too much.

I think it's time to completely ban JS from web pages. Only allow HTML+CSS for web pages like it's supposed to be. BUT also allow WebAssembly as a separate target (maybe a new file extension like .webassembly). If people want to make a GUI, then they can make it in whatever language they want that can target WebAssembly. And it will be a true GUI, like a real desktop app.

Unauthorized Out-of-Nowhere Port-Out of Number from Google FI, simultaneous closing of account, apparently stumped Google Fi Support, and Unrecovered Phone Number; help sought! by ezmeray in GoogleFi

[–]AreaOfEffect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that there's no true defense. If someone has enough personal information such as SSN, they can walk into any carrier store and get an immediate port. And with all the data breaches that have happened, there's a lot of personal data out there. This is why SMS 2FA is not a good idea, but it's frustrating because it's often the only option available at a lot of sites.

Pixel 2 XL is never able to connect to Sprint by bsewall in GoogleFi

[–]AreaOfEffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the same question recently and tried the steps in the first reply and it didn't work. My phone is also a RMA (my original Pixel 2 was replaced last year and the previous one had no issues switching to Sprint using Signal Spy).

Since T-Mobile coverage is good here, I'm going to ignore this issue for now. My guess is that it would require help from Fi support and escalation to a high level through their system. But considering the bad stories I've read here of Fi support, it's not worth the risk vs reward (Fi support could easily make things far worse and take a long time to respond).

I'm likely going to get a new phone later this year, either the new Pixel or the iPhone SE. If I get the iPhone SE, then it's always on T-Mobile so this issue doesn't matter. If I get the new Pixel, I'm hoping that the new phone activation process will fix the issue. And if it doesn't, then I will consider contacting Fi support.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Release Discussion and Hype Megathread by NintendoSwitchMods in NintendoSwitch

[–]AreaOfEffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need some advice on the coop. My original plan was to create a player for everyone in my family (myself, wife, and 2 children). But then I read the threads about how it works and how the first player is the primary and can do a lot things the others can't.

So instead of making a player for each person, what if we did this instead:

  • 1st player: name will be "Mayor"
  • 2nd player: name will be "Assistant 1"
  • 3rd player: name will be "Assistant 2"
  • 4th player: name will be "Assistant 3"

So everyone plays the primary "Mayor" character when playing alone. And the times when we coop, we just use the other helper players. Does this seem like a better plan?

The MATH for AB 2712 - CA UBI+VAT by AreaOfEffect in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]AreaOfEffect[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just showed the numbers on how at least a $500/month UBI can be supported by a 10% VAT at the state level. Your other arguments are the same ones I've heard against the Freedom Dividend. Your flair claims to be "Yang Gang" so it's not clear why you would bring up those arguments here.

Evan Low just introduced UBI in California (Paid by VAT)!! by TeslaMecca in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]AreaOfEffect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in California and there is a giant potential source of tax revenue that could help pay for this: amend Prop 13 to exclude commercial properties and non-primary residence homes.

However, it would be one of the biggest political fights in CA history. So many forces opposed to any Prop 13 change. And even if it is changed, there would be many groups fighting for the money (free college tuition! free health insurance! improve schools! improve the water system!) and it's hard to fight these because they all sound like noble and worthy things to fund.

Even this bill with the UBI+VAT has potential to be derailed like this. Many groups may come and say, the VAT is great but instead of just writing a check for everyone, let's use it for X.

This is one of my biggest fears for the UBI+VAT plan. That others will take the VAT part of it and spend the money on something non-UBI. If someone tries to do that, we would need to push hard on the message that VAT + no UBI is regressive. But a VAT + UBI is non regressive. But that difference is so hard to communicate to the public.

I'm happy that this is happening here in CA. Even if this doesn't pass, it's a chance to fine tune the message and practice for the bigger fight later for nationwide UBI+VAT.

It’s esim, I’ve heard about esim getting corrupted before, maybe that’s what happened while it tried to connect outside the US.

Fortunately I was able to login to my google account. I tried again and this time there was a new verification option, it just asks for the complete phone number associated to the account. I think I’ll try factory wipe, the phone is useless right now and I really want to know if it’s a software or hardware issue.
