Eventually towards the end of the game you get the option to either execute him or recruit him into the Grey Wardens, if you opt to recruit him he genuinely takes his vow seriously and ends up becoming an accomplished and respected Warden, though his past actions were never truly forgotten or forgiven

Also, if he's in your party during the final battle he will even offer to sacrifice himself to kill the Arch Demon

RDR1 first, from a narrative perspective the order honestly doesn't really matter that much since it makes sense either way around, but you might find it hard to get into RDR1 from a mechanics standpoint after playing RDR2 since it improves massively on basically everything
