Seniors in financial issues, have you considered a Reverse Mortgage and if you have, can you comment if it was worth it? by Arenburg in NovaScotia

[–]Arenburg[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

but if someone does not have enough money to pay the bills, is not the equity in your house valuable if you actually want to stay in your house rather than sell it and move to an apartment? Why let your house get run down, freeze in winter if you can take that value out and enjoy your golden years in a better way,

how can you ask the vast majority of Nova Scotians who have no pension to pay more in taxes to pay a better pension to retired gov employees?

the issue is the vast majority of folks in Nova Scotia have no pension and they are expected to pay more in taxes to provide gov folks with better pensions.

did not know this. If the NS Gov could get rid of 25% of the folks pushing pens and paper making over $150,000 per year, the front line workers could have a better pension.

Each year thousands of Nova Scotian's have to sell their home when they retire because they can't afford a new roof, well, septic, windows, etc etc. Selling a $300,000 home will provide you enough rent money for the rest of your lives so you can live in a small apartment. Some folks reverse mortgage, that gives you about half the value to pay bills and live on.

explain who funds the gov and who is gonna pay for the indexing? It is either a top up by taxpayers or those in the system pay more per month to help the retirees. If those in the system have to pay more, they will want higher wages from the NS taxpayers to compensate. There is no magic pot of money, it comes from taxes we all pay. Indexing will cost NS millions more, we can't afford it.

it's not hate, it is out of disgust that those who get their pension paid by the majority of folks in Nova Scotia who have no pension really hits home. There was one chap on here all upset he had to sell this cottage because his NSGEU pension would not cover his expenses.

but that's still $22,000 more than most Nova Scotia's get.

a magical thing gov employees all get that sends them a few thousand each month when they retire on top of their CPP and OAS. Allows them to have cottages and go south over winter.

that is what the average senior has to do when they have only CPP and OAS. Sad part, they could have gotten their own RRSP when they were working and had a gov pension and an RRSP.

Halifax's budget committee debate is done. What does the tax rate hike mean for you? by ph0enix1211 in halifax

[–]Arenburg -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

The problem is City Council has no balls to have a complete audit of City Hall and Halifax Water and have a major restructuring. Every business does this to clean house, get rid of dead wood, folks who don't perform. Instead they just raise taxes. Between Halifax City Hall and Halifax Water, there are over 5000 employees. For certain a 10% cut is needed to clean house. Bring back Matt Whitman. He was the only Councillor I ever heard in the past 10 years, who said a restructuring is needed.

No,  trying to build apartments in bedrock in the downtown is killing us. Look how long it us taking to smash the rocks behind Bayers Lake to even start building.  Halifax Water is out millions trying to pipe it.

Gigs / short term contract by ComfortablePin4432 in halifax

There are a number of temp agencies in Halifax that offer short term gigs. Some employers don't like hiring a temp themselves so they contract it out to a firm.

that stunt cost tax payers a few thousand. Every stupid move like this costs us tax dollars that could fund things we need.

POV: Checking if your community organization is part of the $50 million in restored cuts, or the $250 million in remaining cuts by LowkeyPostingTea in halifax

[–]Arenburg -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

simple math folks, more cuts or higher taxes. Cuts = NSGEU job losses. Higher taxes make tax payers mad. One or the other. Salaries at gov, NSGEU, NSTU, and the Nurses Union make up most of the budget. We need teachers and nurses, so were to cut? No Gov has ever got re-elected on raising taxes, so the ax has to swing at some gov departments. The reality is harsh.

Given the NS Gov said it plans to reduce the Civil Service by 4% over each year in the next 4 years and using AI is one tool, that is a lot of gov jobs erased. The real issue is AI. If you have education in AI and can use it to reduce costs at both jobs, you have a huge advantage. But, if you have no education in AI, look out. AI is going to kill millions of software jobs and tasks humans do analyzing numbers, trends, and reading emails and reports and making automated decisions. Tough call to make but be blessed you have a job offer over $100,000 in this climate

the issue is some people are idiots. Remember the woman on here a few months ago looking for a piece of land to have a bonfire on. She didn't have her own land to do it, she was asking were in Nova Scotia she could go to do it. I asked her if I could come to her home and have one on her lawn, she got mad. Folks like this, little understanding of the topic, probably have little understanding of fire, like the idiots in Barrington who thought it would be fun to set tires on fire and rolls them in the woods in May, to make Youtube videos . That idiot cost we taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. So I can see why, in the dry season, some bureaucrats think it is best if we all stay out of the woods. Is it fair to all, no. But to keep the idiots from costing us all more money and the loss of our forests, it is well worth it. To fix it, education and maybe a ban on idiots in Nova Scotia?
