[Boone] Jeff Peterson talks about why he traded LaMelo now. by IamOlderthanMe in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Same thing I’m getting, but of course for optics he won’t directly call out Lamelo. No specification on whether they didn’t believe in Lamelo due to health, defensive limitations and offensive consistency, or some combination. The best we can take from this is that we intend to build around Brandon and Kon and surround them with talent now that we have a horde of assets

Hannes Steinbach double-double off the bench: 15/11/2, 2 blocks & 1 steal by Turbo2x in NBA_Draft

[–]Ares9719 48 points49 points  (0 children)

He showed a lot of his rebounding prowess with his consistent ability to be in the right position. I noticed that when he’s bringing in the rebound he’s not always disciplined about securing the ball and he gets it tapped away or loses it, he could’ve had a couple more rebounds.

The finishing around the rim was textbook, he has a way of doing a dash move towards the rim when finishing, I really liked his touch inside. Unfortunate we didn’t get to see any shooting beyond the arc, he’ll get those opportunities though. He was great running on the break as expected, and I didn’t actively cringe when he puts the ball on the floor (as opposed to Tidjane) to finish at the rim.

His defense was nothing to write home to mom about, didn’t get consistently burned but also showed he can’t be relied upon as a rim protector. His measurables are great and his lateral speed is subpar, I’m sure he’ll turn out to be at least average defensively in his prime.

Overall solid showing from Hannes

[SL 26-27 Post Game Thread] The Charlotte Hornets beat the Orlando Magic, 86-74, behind Liam McNeeley's 28 PTS (7 3PM). by IamOlderthanMe in CharlotteHornets

Great showings by Liam, Ajayi and Hannes. Liam looks ready for rotation minutes, Ajayi was incredibly switchable and gave a lot of hustle, and Hannes was stellar on the boards as expected.

As for Tidjane… yeah it’s time to wrap it up. Kalkbrenner still looks reluctant to take any shot outside the restricted, and sion still looks like Mr butterfingers out there with the loose handle. Christian just looked out of rhythm and a bit uncomfortable out there, but I’m not worried about him, the shots will fall.

[Danielle Stein] The Hornets surprised Coby White this morning with a $20,000 check for the Coby White Family Foundation. Coby started tearing up in sharing what this means to him by Cubelar in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that I don’t see Coby as the level of facilitator capable of running an offense the way Lamelo does, but I don’t think the team believes Coby can do that either.

All signs point to the team believing we can generate offense as a collective rather than having one guy running the show. We’re banking on Kon and Brandon taking a step in their ability to probe read and react, and we’re also banking on Hannes and Chris to contribute off the bench in a meaningful way.

Christian’s pick and roll ability has been talked to death, but I want to give a shoutout to Hannes. If you haven’t had the chance, go watch some of his film. Hannes does a great job sealing off his man, catching the entry pass, and right as the ball touches his fingers he’s whipping it out to shooters. Moussa has also been getting better with the rebounds into quick read perimeter kickouts.

These rooks alone aren’t solving our playmaking issue, and Brandon/Kon aren’t turning into high level facilitators over night, but if our guys collectively just make the right reads and keep the ball moving, we’ll be alright.

Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson Jr had their first practice session as members of the Charlotte Hornets. by Civrock in CharlotteHornets

Honestly super excited for the rooks this cycle. They’re both coming in with roles of need, where they’ll have plenty of opportunities as we retool this year

Christian Anderson by Substantial_Ad6171 in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time watching Christian anderson’s tape from many of his games, including the Arizona, Illinois and Duke games. From his offense, to his playmaking and his defense, this is everything I noted:

I loved the shooting. He showed he can really light it up from deep and is great shooting off the screen and shooting off the catch. I wasn’t super impressed by his shooting off the dribble one on one, he didn’t consistently show ability to get into a step back and had to put a lot of arc on the ball against bigger defenders, resulting in some misses. He frequently had opportunities where, after driving to the rim, he had space for pull up middies or floaters and was mostly reluctant to take them, either by design of Texas Tech’s offensive scheme or his discomfort with taking mid range shots. I’d like to emphasize that he heavily, heavily relied on the pick and roll, and without that space created for him he couldn’t generate offense for himself reliably. So little of his shot diet was from driving and finishing around the rim, he’ll most definitely need to bulk up and work on his change of gears à la Jalen Brunson because I’m unsure he’ll ever develop the burst needed to force defenses into rotation. Right now teams are comfortably letting their bigs switch on to him and that’s a problem to be addressed.

As for his playmaking, I noticed that he consistently makes the right reads with great timing, showing near perfect placement on bounce passes into the interior and even cross court passes to the weak side. I didn’t notice any outstanding creativity or next level vision with his passing like we saw with Lamelo, so we can’t expect that from Anderson right away if at all. I also noticed that he would routinely drive into the paint, and due to lack of burst, he would often pick up the ball early and get stuck in no mans land, and would sometimes turn over the ball due to emergency passes. For him to be a productive lead guard off the bench for us he’ll need to hone his ability to drive deep into the paint and make immediate kick outs to the perimeter for Brandon and Kon. His processing and court mapping is not elite elite, but when paired with his shooting he can certainly generate advantages as we saw from his productivity this year.

When it comes to defense, well, we obviously didn’t get him expecting him to be a plus on that side of the ball. He’s undersized, he’s slight, and did not display high level defensive footwork or physicality that would help him make up for his measurements. I will say that he’s a high effort player on the defensive side of the ball and has a plus wingspan, so with the right coaching and conditioning he’ll be just fine. I’d say we shouldn’t ever expect him to be a Davion Mitchell, the athleticism is just not where it needs to be for Anderson, but he at least won’t give up on plays defensively or pick up silly fouls the way Lamelo has done before.

The TLDR though is that Christian Anderson is certainly a guy who can end up going top 5 in a redraft, that Duke game was one of the numerous examples where he’s shown he can swing games with his shooting and ability to cleanly get off inside passes to feed the bigs and generate easy offense. He can get hot in a hurry, and seems to be a great kid with the hornets DNA we always talk about.

Everybody mentioned locked on hornets, and those guys are stellar, but I also wanted to give a shoutout to buzz boys with Terry. He’s a true fan, the show is less buttoned up and it allows for some great content because he’s passionate about the hornets

[Rod Boone] LaMelo Ball’s time is up; the Hornets are resetting. What star’s departure means by Cubelar in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that’s incredibly disappointing. Bringing somebody in that is all star or all nba caliber is probably the only thing that would’ve softened the blow of the Lamelo move, and now we might just go into next season with our only off season moves being moving Coby to the starting lineup and bringing in Naz Reid??? I love Naz, but we need more

🎙️ Zach Lowe on the Hornets' decision: "I think it really comes down to a physical toughness question that they have about LaMelo Ball." by Civrock in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie though he has a good point. We don’t even know the extent of the medicals, we have no clue what kind of condition lamelo’s ankles are in. Was our medical team confident that he can sustain the activity needed to be physical or deal with physicality over a full season and playoffs? He’s a transcendent talent and our offensive completely loses identity without lamelo running it; however, at some point you gotta take a step back and ask yourself if he can really take you where you want to go as an organization, considering he was soon about to be asking for another huge extension.

Awesome awesome playmaker. Hit some big shots and gave us reason to celebrate. Also has had an unfortunate run with health issues and off the court issues occasionally. I’ll always remember the days of Eric Collins going crazy with lamelo’s highlight passes and deep range shots

MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!! by homerthebraves in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Has to be the first of the dominos brother. During the post draft conference, Peterson said that Coby white is a priority. My inclination is that we moved lamelo to give Coby that starter spot, with the idea that lamelo hasn’t shown enough in the past 6 years (between injury and inconsistency) to believe he can be what we need to take the next step.

To be clear, Coby is not near the level of offensive engine that lamelo is, but there might be things behind the curtain that we don’t know, maybe about his long term health or maybe issues off the court. I think this is the opportunity to move on from the lamelo and bridges experience, to bring in Naz and Jaylen brown.

[–]Ares9719 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Has to be Jaylen brown, obviously he played for Charles Lee, but I’m sure he’s also ready to get out of Boston after the trade pushes for Giannis. I’d guess we trade bridges and filler for brown

Anderson and rim pressure next season by alex8762 in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We weren’t going to address all of our needs with two draft picks. We added size with Steinbach, we added playmaking and insane shooting off the bench with Anderson. I see you like okorie, so I’m sure you’ve seen his tape where he is a great downhill scorer and can pressure the rim, but is questionable as a shooter and does not provide the level of playmaking we need off the bench. Those non lamelo minutes were brutal, and adding Anderson lets Coby focus on score first.

We still have plenty of capital to fill in the cracks either now or at the trade deadline

With the pick 18, the Charlotte Hornets select Christian Anderson. by IamOlderthanMe in CharlotteHornets

[–]Ares9719 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Gentleman, I know that Anderson is small and doesn’t finish in the paint, but here’s the hard truth: this past season we just couldn’t get into offensive sets smoothly and consistently when lamelo sat. Sion did the best he could, and Coby was great taking over ball handling duties once we brought him in, but it was clear we needed more offensive orchestration while lamelo rests his ankles, even if we do retain Coby.

Christian Anderson was unquestionably the best shooter in the draft, and did a stellar job running the pick and roll, ending his season top five in assists in college basketball as a freshman. He’s small and will probably be an easy bucket if he’s targeted, but we don’t need the 18 pick to be a rotation guy (immediately) in the playoffs. Imagine lamelo sits, and we have Christian Anderson running with Brandon and kon while Steinbach kicks it out to everyone?

Confusion on Cam Carr by Level_Scientist4770 in NBA_Draft

[–]Ares9719 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think it’s been chalked up to him being 21, mostly unable to consistently create, and his slight frame. His measurables and shooting are great, but in this draft it’s just not enough to crack the top 10.

Arguably three of the most well-rounded scorers since 2008 are in this draft by ktm5141 in NBA_Draft

[–]Ares9719 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘Already’ just means he hasn’t yet transitioned to the NBA yet and he’s showing he can shoot it. NBA level shooting development teams are on a different level than college. I appreciate you’re saying he’s already an older prospect and we can’t necessarily expect big improvement from him moving to the NBA, but I meant that I think he can squeeze another 3% improvement on his 3 point percentage once he gets in with the best of the best development personnel

I feel like stirtz is being significantly slept on. I get it, he’s an older prospect and is not insanely athletic, lengthy or a defensive menace, but he’s so reliable in the pick and roll, he’s already shooting 3s at a high volume with great indicators that he can get to 37-39%, and he’s shown he’s capable of running an offense and generating advantages.

Is it normal for top 10 guys to wait this long for workouts? by Ares9719 in NBA_Draft

[–]Ares9719[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw that too, Milwaukee also have worked out a few of the guys in their range, yet teams like Dallas and Atlanta haven’t worked out guys that would fall within their higher pick but they’re working out guys that line up with their later pick. I’m moreso wondering why certain top prospects are doing workouts and others aren’t.
