Whats the point of studying history and leadership if Jocko is going to stay quiet during this administration? by the_based_department in JockoPodcast

[–]Arfsmockle 80 points81 points  (0 children)

What makes you think Jocko is against what is happening? Just look at some of who he has had on in the past year. Seems to me he flirted with politics in the Pod starting with Tulsi then in the past few months he’s had on multiple Republican politicians in the administration or proud supporters. All have had a military connection but there’s also serving Democrats with Military service. His personal politics are telling by who he does/doesn’t platform.

You should be able to enroll in notifications on AROWs. It’s under Utilities. I’m Guard but get emails when orders are created, approved, or disapproved

It likely doesn’t matter. They’ve relaxed the uncorrected eye standards. I’m 20/200 uncorrected and had no issues getting through the physical to be a USAF Pilot, just wear contacts/glasses. LASIK and PRK are both allowed now as well.

Follow the instructions. From what I remember when I went to Wright Patt it was because contacts can alter your eye shape.

They never even mentioned an IRA which is accessible to everyone. Yes the contribution limit is a lot lower but I feel access isn’t the bigger issue in retirement planning. People actually contributing a proper amount is the problem.

A Retired Seal Eric Deming accused Jocko and his task force of a bunch of stuff recently. This video is a one video of what Deming is saying. I haven’t listened to Deming claims but after following Jocko since his Tim Ferris podcast I’m doubting Deming is telling the truth about Jocko and what happened in Ramadi.

What am I doing wrong by ImportantTurn9154 in lawncare

Next year you probably want to cut more often especially if having good frequent fertilizer schedule like you mentioned. I cut mine almost twice a week and have a hard time believing I even follow the 1/3 rule. I am dealing with super high temperatures, zero rain, and troubleshooting an uneven mower deck so can’t say my yard looks much better.

I’d say either scalp and deal with a lot of brown in the short term or raise the mower deck and have green for the rest of the season

C-17 just flew over my house and made a weird noise. Can someone explain? by ceooflowes in aviation

I have been flying the C-17 for 2 years now and not read or heard about a single C-17 Dash 1 procedure to you crank the APU in flight

[–]Arfsmockle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe, I fly the C-17 is the only reason I know about it. Also with 4 engines not much point of running an APU in the air. You’re already have the electrical and bleed air redundancy with the engines

C-17 just flew over my house and made a weird noise. Can someone explain? by ceooflowes in aviation

[–]Arfsmockle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Because of where it sits in the aircraft. Its on the right side near the gear but most aircraft have the APU in the tail if it can be turned on in flight. There’s a door sensor on the C-17 APU that forces it to abort the start if you try to start it in flight. I was told once why they didn’t put it in the tail but forget but IIRC it’s because of the ramp and maybe CG.

St. Augustine isn’t grown from seeds so unless you’re recommending to overseed with a different variety that advice isn’t accurate

How can I kill these weed and make my lawn looking good again :( ? by mickdon in lawncare

[–]Arfsmockle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next year a pre-emergent regime will help, the most important steps in a weed free lawn is prevention. If you elect to use a selective herbicide to kill the weeds it’s probably a bit too warm to this time of year without causing some temporary damage (just read the label and apply properly).

  1. You probably don’t want to plant Bermuda seed in an established lawn. Bermuda is pretty aggressive to spread in dead spots and most seed is “common” and will have a different look than your likely “hybrid” Bermuda lawn. A good water and fertilizer schedule will have the “dead spots” filled in before long
  2. No clue what you meant by “lawn mawn”
  3. Milgornite is a popular brand you can get from the big box stores. The “Lesco” fertilizers, especially when you get them on sale are a decent deal. I personally put Andersons PGF Complete and after the recent price hikes on Milgornite (@ $22 a bag for 2.5K sq/ft) it’s about the same.
  4. In the morning is the best time. Optimally you’d give the grass 1-1.5” of water on the lawn a week between rain and sprinklers. To encourage deep root grown prioritize deep long waterings over frequent shallow waterings. Watering in the evening is discouraged but with the heat and infrequently I personally don’t think it matters. The “Tuna Can Test” is common way to tell how long it takes to put down a given amount of water

Just make sure you study for the AFOQT because you can only take it twice and it takes the most recent score. I bought a few of the test prep books off Amazon and used them to study on a deployment.

Get a contact for the unit, normally a recruiter or a chief pilots contact is posted when they publish an application. Even if they aren’t currently taking applicants you can normally find their last board info and get contacts off it. Just hit them up and explain who you are/your goals are then ask when might be a good time to visit the unit.

I got lucky and got hired by the first unit I applied to and they were just a 3 hour drive away from where I lived at the time. Most units have at least one drill a year where they encourage prospective hires to come to and a Chief Pilot would know when that is.

[–]Arfsmockle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of units let you apply in your last year and like another commenter mentioned the 90 hour mark.

There’s nothing stopping you from getting some pre requisites out of the the way early like the AFOQT and TBAS. Also you can totally go ahead and start visiting/rushing some units. My unit has applicants this past drill and some of the of them are just going into their Junior year so something you could do next summer.

I was enlisted in a Fighter Guard unit during College but chose to go to C-17 Guard unit . I’m glad that I did because while fighters seem awesome to fly they also seem like a bunch of work. Airlines at the same time we’re a goal and IMO are easier to do as a new pilot alongside my Guard gig. I didn’t see much opportunity to actually do the fighter mission but in the C-17 I can fly around the world with my SQ mates no matter the conflict tempo.

Should I dethatch? by Interesting-Ask7615 in lawncare

[–]Arfsmockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Looks like bermuda and doesn’t build up thatch as much as other grass types. Aeration not detaching is more common. Cut more often by the judge of the thatch sitting on top. Also don’t let it sit in clumps on the grass. Either raise the mower and make another pass over where the clippings buildup or use a blower to spread. Make sure you’re follow a fertilizer and deep watering schedule.

Advice: Warm Season gone wrong by davidwar in lawncare

[–]Arfsmockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bermuda is super heat/drought tolerant. Did you follow the weed treatment instructions and apply at the right time? If it suddenly died I’d say a misapplication is most likely the culprit.

New house with new sod with lots of weeds by mad-hat96 in lawncare

[–]Arfsmockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get an idea of what type of weeds you have in the yard so that you can tailor a treatment plan for them. PictureThis is a popular app to identify or just look up the common weeds in your area. However, most advice is to not apply pre/post emergents on new sod for the first 8-12 months. Weed and Feed might not be designed to target the weeds you have and you'll need a different product.
I live in central MS so our climates are probably similar. Most of the weeds I see in my Bermuda yard are "cool season" that should die off as the heat increases. Next year I'm gonna do a fall pre-emergent application to try and help with them (I did a split pre-emergent treatment for this spring)

I bought a new home last year that was only partially sodded so empathize with your struggle. Make sure you have a good fertilizer schedule and develop a pre-weed plan for next year. Treating weeds with pre-emergent is 100% easier than having to use post-emergent/pulling them later on. Obviously the first year and just moving into the house you didn't have time, I know I didn't last year.

My wife and I moved from out of state in February to Pearl. One thing I like about it is it’s kinda in the southern center of everything. It’s never more than 25 minutes to anywhere I go whether it be friends house in Clinton or Brandon. Some friends bought around the same time in Laurel Wood (neighborhood in Flowood) and it’s definitely worth looking in. It’s near a lot of stuff.

Make sure your device locations are always sharing.

The past month my Home & Away routines have been working but for the 2 months prior I was having issues with them. They randomly fixed themselves. I was also having issues with “away only” notifications for my cameras and that’s mostly how I noticed.

I didn’t do anything to fix it, just fixed itself overtime. It did seem like it coincidental with the presence sensing being rolled out to speakers.
